Teams and scorers below.

Why is SAA playing with the kids? I know he is one, but he's better than that and needs to develop by playing mens football.

Because some combination of Wilcox / Martin would rather bring attacking midfielders on loan than trust him in the first team 😢

We're overloaded imo with first team players in that area. It's poor that at least one of SAA or Dibling can't make the match day 20. No good for the lads or the club as youngsters need to see that they'll get a chance.

One of the top results when searching this is a Bristol City forum thread with the first comment, "About damn time". It's from 2013. I thought with the EPPP and catchment areas becoming obsolete, this wouldn't become an issue. Obviously not the case.

Not that it really matters when Chelsea can hoover up whatever academy talent we have, wherever we are.

So we can't have a satellite centre in Bath, but Chelsea can have their foundation everywhere, hoovering up the top talent?

Seems fair.

Good to see we’re preparing our own next generation of hyphens, and double barrelled names. You know prices in that area of the market will increase.

Rohart-Brown signed a scholarship deal in October 2023 when he joined Saints from Reading and is a year above the others. So the Twitter source you got that from might not be reliable.

Signed his actual scholarship Friday evening. Signed initially pre-scholar.

Thanks for sharing. You could post the link to where you take your info from as well like most of us do - as lots of people want to know the source and take a look themselves.

What a ridiculous reaction.

If you’re losing sleep over a couple of teenagers who have never played a meaningful level game of football then your priorities are all wrong. 😂

Jesus. You have no idea whether they’d have turned out to be Gareth Bale or Saido Berahino. Grow up mate.

Yes it’s frustrating when kids are poached but that says more about the bigger clubs that will happily piss away money on children’s wages.
They’ve gone for the pay day, no more than that. See Jimmy-Jay Morgan who was sold eighteen months ago, I see his career has flourished since then…

Let’s nip this narrative in the bud once again. They are 15/16. These top clubs and academies are the best places for their education, to train with, play against and be coached by the best is quite rightly something kids who get those opportunities should very much explore. Whether they are right for them is up to them, Dibling for example decided the best place for him was here and whether it works out is up in the air, as is any young players career anywhere, but just noting it down to money is absurd because it’s quite obviously about more than that.

Also find it quite funny people feel Southampton is the best place for young players of that age when there is very little recent evidence of academy prospects getting regular opportunities in the first team anyway.

I guess it's not as devastating because we've never seen them play, so we don't know if they're any good at first team level - but it's still quite sad.  We'll still make some money on them, but it's not ideal.

Gomes never looked like he was going to commit, so that was not a surprise at all.

There is a tiny worrying lack of pathway here at the mo I would say - we had an opportunity last season to give Dibling for example more game time, but he barley got a look in. SAA and Maghoma signing for more money (wages) from other clubs probably doesn't go down well with the existing crop either.

I think Andy Goldie is improving things though, he's only been in for a year but things are changing for the better from what I've heard. But as with academy setups, changes aren't immediate - it can sometimes take years for the benefits to transfer through to be visible.

That's because they are significantly better than 90% of the rest of the academy (perhaps only Dibling aside), and are effectively first team squad members. I think most were surprised neither featured more for the first team last year. Hoping to see more of both this season.

Pretty sure SAA will go on loan. Meghoma in the last year of his contract I believe so will be interesting if he signs a new one too and goes on loan with it or maybe seeks to leave himself.

What a blow for anyone working in the academy - its becoming more and more of a difficult to see an actual homegrown prospect make it.

Only the very best academy players are good enough for PL football (or even Championship) so if you can't keep your top 5% beyond the age of 16 then you really have no chance of ever seeing a first team debut aside from players you buy in later on like SAA/Meghoma.

Of our recent long term academy players who have clearly been very good at youth level nearly all have chosen to leave before making any impact in our first team: Morgan, Doyle, Dibling (came back as couldn't settle) and now these two.

Its not really a good advert for our academy. The only players aside from Dibling who are anywhere close are players we bought in the same way, from Spurs.

If Miles or Gomes don't make it at City or wherever they will still make a tidy profit on them whereas we will get peanuts - seems an unsustainable model for non big clubs.

I get in some ways the idea of not caving to pay demands but if the point of an academy is to develop players for your first team and you have a couple of the best in Europe for their age then surely you do absolutely everything to keep them, even if that means upsetting others who are lesser players?

Did you moan when we took Meghoma and SAA from spurs academy? That left back from Everton who everyone thought was gonna be a superstar?

Roundabouts and swings mate.

Yep, good post. If I was a promising kid here, I'd assume I ain't getting 1st team football, so I'd go elsewhere to also not good 1st team football but get a)more cash, b) better coaching and development, and c) a chance to get 1st team football in that clubs extensive loan network.

Bit of an overreaction there, mate. Who says I'm losing sleep, or need my priorities sorting?

All I said was its pointless having an academy when all the top talents are nicked before they've had the chance to make it worthwhile for us ... literally exactly the same as what you went on to say about it being frustrating.

You're right in that it's all about the payday, though. Should very much be a wage cap on these young lads, who, let's not forget, aren't even an adult.
