Oops. It hasn't been called that for years. The correct description now is 'unsporting behaviour' and has been for a long time. Apparently it was because the player might not actually be a gentleman.

Hope he puts the same effort into his performances as he does his social media posts. We've just got rid of one whose presence on the field fell short of his media image.

Could prove an inspired signing if he lives up to the early promise in his career. Worst case though we've just signed a 'Lemina-Osvaldo' hybrid.

He seems to be genuinely buzzing about being here, so looking forward to seeing how he gets on, not hard to be an improvement on our current set up. Lots of people on hear crying out for a bit of grit and passion in our team, seems you might now get it.

Its not so much the fault of The Athletic in general. Carl was tapped up to be the united journalist and poached accordingly - it was always his dream to cover the hallowed goings on at Old Trafford ;).

But he's one of the best sports journalists out there imo and his articles and level ability to ingratiate himself with club figures when he was here really helped - as did the fact that he wasn't actually a saints fan jsut pumping out biased fan articles.

Dan replaced him coming from the Daily Echo (i think?), so realistically he's got to work himself up to being at the same level to someone who is a very good journalist - not the easiest boots to fill. I also think he suffers from being too close to the club.

To be honest, he doesn't actually come across as that passionate about football or the club - just seems like a job he's fallen into. Nowhere near the level of Carl, or the previous Echo journalist (name escapes me), or someone like Adam Blackmore. He doesn't seem that bothered and it is reflected in the quality of his output.

Yeah i know what you mean. I don't want to be too harsh on the guy so give him the benefit of the doubt and assume its because he started out at the echo.

But it could equally be the case that he's simply happy to print the easy stories he gets from the club and just doesn't really give that much of a toss re doing more in depth pieces/research. I suspect you could give quite a few people the press contacts he's got and you'd get at least the same level of output 🤷‍♂️.

When we played man u I read Dan Sheldon's piece and then read Carl's piece.

Dans was more generic sports writing.

Carl was explaining more what happened and used tactical demonstration's to illustrate points.

I like Dan and I read his articles but I get more insight from Tom Leach more now and when he covered us Jacob Tanswell who now covers Bournemouth.

I think that's it though - just looks like one, you would think a no nonsense 'hard bastard' CB would rack up more than 18 yellows and no straight reds in his career so far, especially in the modern game where you get yellow cards for minor stuff. Doesn't seem in the Pepe mould if comparing to another Brazilian born centre back.

He probably can't believe his luck at being chosen to play in the "best league in the world" and getting a raise after shipping 69 goals and almost getting relegated. A bit like how Ryan Shawcross or our Jan Bednarek would feel if Real Madrid suddenly bid for them.

So one player isn’t alone responsible for shipping every goal a team concedes, and I also thought he was not wanted as he wears the even a regular in a side that shipped so many goals.

I also think he is duly responsible for industrial era global warming, and for the monkey chants that never happened in Budapest last night.

No idea how much he was on in Italy but everyone knows Premier League wages are the highest in the world (why do you think players call it the best league in the world?) so ten to one we're paying him more.

Yeah I’m sure he will be at fault for some, and I totally agree it is a clean slate.

We are likely to be paying more salary than he used to get, but maybe not as much as we were paying Vesty, I’m not de facto on that, but can see that maybe being the case. And again, so what, good luck to him. I dont think I have ever reduced my salary when ive been offered a new job, not sure why footballers, unless they are hurtling towards the end of their careers (thinking Theo etc.) should be any different.

Despite the widespread (on here at least) lack of awareness and knowledge of this player, I have a sneaky feeling he will turn out to be a really decent player for us. I really enjoyed his attitude about signing.

It seems like it is someone who has some talent at from an early age this was seen but his choice have clubs have not worked out for him for whatever reason. This can easily happen. 

Ralph's signings have all been good and I trust him on this one so let's see in 3 or 4 mo ths where we are. For the fee it could be an absolute bargain. And if it doesn't work out its not a lot of money!!

Me too.  I reckon Ralph's plan is to keep him on the bench for a few weeks to wind him up like a wristwatch.  We've needed some grit for a number of seasons and Lyanco could be the man, tag team with Sugar Ray Stephens...

I was wondering if he would get his first start in that match too. Wouldn't surprise me to be honest. He was on the bench last weekend, so looks as if Ralph would trust him if called upon/required.

Not sure he's going to be ready for the challenge of Oli McBurnie and Billy Sharp front line.

We're only allowed to judge a player on the back of a single game if the judgment is that they are brilliant and will be definitely worth £40m and/or we've made a huge error only loaning this guy we have to buy him, he's a class above etc etc etc.

Otherwise single game analysis is not permitted.
