It's a question as you say.  I agree it's statistically very unlikely that the 3 teams below us will reach 40 points but unlike you I don't think it is completely impossible. So my preference would be that we pull our finger out and get at least a point against Brentford. I'm not saying that I think it is certain that they will all reach 40 points or anything like certain. Hope that helps your understanding.

I want us to beat Brentford as well, if that helps your understanding.

Cannot see Leeds getting 2 more wins and a draw in their last 4 (Arsenal and Chelsea)
Cannot see Burnley picking up more than 4 points. In their last 4 (away to Villa, and Spurs)

Everton - god knows! But I think 9 points.

All this is if we do not pick up another point, which of course is possible, but we will hopefully end all this talk of the drop at Brentford. But even if we do not pick up another point, I think we will be safe before the last game.

Increasingly likely 40 points will be the bare minimum to stay up this year.

We'd be incredibly unlucky to see all the teams below us catch up, but we are out of form at the wrong time (yet again).

It's embarrassing that we are not mathmatically safe by now.

But, after the start we had I thought we'd be flirting all the way through the season, so its nice that we got a little break.

Lets smash  Liverpool, to confirm our fragile survival status.

Why have those two matches 'saved our bacon' rather than, say, the draw vs Man City in September and the win vs Spurs in February? (There were a few other favourable results I could have picked at random)

Yes, but I assume @SNSUN was considering recent results. Actually, if you want to choose one of those, I would take the draw against Leeds from another JWP splendid free kick. If we lose our last 3 matches (very possible) I can see Burnley and Everton overtaking us, but can't see Leeds getting more than 6 more points: which means at worst we'd finish above them on goal difference (assuming we don't get a rogering by Liverpool).

I think this is right.  While not mathematically safe, one more point I am confident will be enough.  Of all the scary scenarios, the ones I think are most likely are Everton and Burnley catching us.  Making Leeds take eight points rather than seven would turn the dial for me, hence saying a draw at Brentford I am sure will do it.

However huge wake up call for the club, and if we lose our last three games (which is quite likely ) a reminder that in three of the last five seasons we will have failed to exceed 40 points.

No, I'm wrong. My favourite thing is soul crushing humourlessness like your contributions. And they fucking happen all the time.

Yes as our most recent points during a shocking run of form. Very few people saw the Arsenal result coming so that was a pleasant surprise.

But that's football. You wouldn't expect to beat Arsenal, nor would you expect zero points from home games against Palace, Watford and Newcastle. You can't expect one but not the other and say that it's saved our bacon.

What I'm saying is that hypothetically without our 4 most recent points we'd be on 36 with a rubbish GD and perhaps be being talked about as favourites for the drop. Thankfully we did get them so it's moot.

I see what you're saying though, that any points we achieved are as important as any other. Over the course of the season our most important result IMO probably goes to the Spurs win, as we rarely come back from behind and Spurs were in good form.

This.  We aren't going down this season but we could well finish 17th as I fail to see where another point is coming from for us. Leeds now look most likely for the drop.

One thing to say... if we were in the relegation battle proper, with say 34 points, I'd tip us for relegation. I agree with others that the Arsenal win and the Brighton draw have saved our bacon... 36 points and a poor goal difference may not have been enough.

Last season we'd been top of the league and just stayed up, this year we're limping over the finish line, albeit in a season where it looks like more points than usual to be safe , definitely a pattern with Ralph.

Just reading that Ross County have a chance of European football next season. They have now climbed to 5th, and are in the top half of the split that league has.

Vokins has 16 appearances to Ramsey's 8 (with Sims yet to play). Good experience for them, and a decent club relationship for us to have.

Just watching Fulham, they look a really good side. Mitrovitch just scored his 42nd goal of the season don’t think they’ll be the pushovers Norwich and Watford have been this season. Now 5-0 up against Luton

Although Norwich looked good running away with the Championship last year and invested on top of that

Bizarre that he can score so many in the Championship and be so bad in the Prem.

His first Prem season with Fulham he scored 11, not great but more than any of our strikers this season. He’s now at his peak so maybe next season will be better. But like Toney this season, and Armstrong etc, not many strikers make the jump successfully.

Big game tonight in Bournemouth. Must win for Forest!

Expand

A Forest win and then it all comes down to the last day, I think Bournemouth will beat Millwall and Forest will beat Hull and Forest would just do it on goal difference.

Will be a fascinating game.

Every time Bournemouth look like blowing it, they pull a result out of the bag. Blackburn Saturday, Huddersfield a couple of weeks back. I fully expect them to get at least a point tonight and finish the job Saturday.

I'd love Forest to beat Bournemouth, principally as I started supporting football when Forest were in the top flight and they had players like Jason Lee etc. Plus I don't think Forest are ready made for the Prem yet unlike Bournemouth so that would help with our inevitable relegation battle (that'll get some backs up) next season.

Also it would make the last day interesting.

I remember as a kid getting the Forest badge sticker for the Merlin sticker album, initially celebrating thinking it was the Saints one, and then being disappointed when I quickly realised it wasn’t

Nice of Championship to put it on at 7pm. So much more interesting than Liverpool game who I’d love to come unstuck  but can’t see it. C’mon Forest although if they fuck it up let’s get their manager to replace Ralph for next season

Hope Forest smash them. Huge soft spot for Forest and who the fuck wants bloody Bournemouth in the Premier League again.

Think I'd rather Bournemouth go up. Easier away day and I want us to get Steve Cooper and theres no chance of that if Forest go up!

Me.

I find the cherries fans to be a bit cringe but overall they’re harmless. It’s a south coast derby, it’s not the proper one but it still means a little bit more than other games.

Plus I went to uni in Bournemouth and had a great laugh there, went to a few games at Dean court at the time when they were utterly dreadful but it was a good crack.

And I don’t like forest, never have. Much like Derby I think a good proportion of their fans seem like cunts.
