The Left Back Posted 21 April, 2022 Share Posted 21 April, 2022 Surely this is a simple case where it's both Howe's work and the quality and quantity of spending in January that have contributed to their massive shift in form, not one or the other? Howe himself has credited the winter break, and there's also new owners and the 'feel good factor' to consider. So all these factors (and probably some other behind the scenes ones we don't even know about) have probably played a part. The same old debate between the same old characters makes for fascinating car-crash viewing but what else is it achieving? For my 50p's worth, Howe has done better than I expected in what was a tough assignment and the signings were a good mix of solid trusted pros with a sprinkle of stardust. It will be interesting to see what happens over the summer with them. If they are serious about top 6 they are going to have to make some tough decisions about whether to stick with Howe and also how many of the current squad are good enough for first 11 places.

Seemed desperate at the time because no one else would sign for them. Although I’m not a big fan of Howe, he has to take credit for turning a totally demoralised, unorganised team and turning them around with a few ok-ish signings. Like a lot of people, I was praying he would fail.

I’d agree with this. Howe has done better than expected but the money cannot be ignored. TWar has rightly pointed out how new signings in particular have contributed significantly to their upturn and goal contributions. The feel good factor is 100% valid too, they now have positivity and are looking up, almost playing to stay in the team as it climbs. It’s an exciting journey now that players will want to be part of. Howe’s poor start shows either the money was essential or it took him 10 games to get his methods across. Either way they will likely finish above us and given the gap we had, I don’t personally find that acceptable.

He basically has changed the full playing style and had a group of players who’s confidence was lower than a snakes belly. The money they’ve spent cannot be ignored, clearly. However, he’s done a great job there. Spunking money doesn’t guarantee success, just look at United & Everton.

Wurzel Posted 21 April, 2022 Share Posted 21 April, 2022 I've admittedly only seen highlights of Everton's recent games but every commentary seems to consist of "Richarlison.........Richarlison.........Richarlison.........". Can't stand the guy but he appears to be trying to keep them up on his own.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 21 April, 2022 Share Posted 21 April, 2022 Fucking hell, if Howe signs Broja next season Twar is going to have a right hate fest. The simple truth is Eddie Howe was on a hiding to nothing, if they didn’t improve he’d be criticised for being out of his depth, if they did improve substantially, it’s down to the money. He can’t win. He’s done a decent job, certainly better than some claimed he would. Early days, whether he can go to the next level is debatable, whether he’s done well so far, isn’t.

Nordic Saint Posted 23 April, 2022 Share Posted 23 April, 2022 (edited) Sideways passes in front of your own goal. It doesn't matter how good your goalkeeper is, it doesn't work. Even a good midfielder stopping and playing short passes is going to give the ball away at least once every game but it's not in a danger area. But a goalkeeper doing it a few yards in front of his own goal is stupid, and the manager is even more stupid for telling him to do it. So many goals are being given away that way. Whenever I've seen Arsenal he's been the weak link. I remember him getting subbed off tactically after 35 minutes against Nottingham Forest in the cup because he wasn't up to it against a Championship side. Same as Firpo at Leeds, Perraud was the best of the bunch that we were linked with last summer.

Err...ok mate. I'm not sure I've heard anyone say Pep is a fraud. Of those Newcastle signings, Targett, Wood, and Burn wouldn't get near a top 4 side. They were the best Newcastle could get in those positions and all credit must go to Howe for getting results with them and the rest of his squad. Don't get me wrong, Bruno is some player, but don't be trying to convince anyone that Howe has been gifted elite signings because he hasn't.
