"Getting...!" In my lifetime (and I'm nearly pensionable), I can only remember us, Sunderland, Coventry, Wigan and the Skates winning it outside of the top sides.

Excluding the current big 6...the list in your lifetime (depending on your year of birth in the 1950s/60s) is probably a lot longer than that...

1 Saints

2 Sunderland

3 Coventry

4 Wigan

5 Portsmouth

Plus...

6 West Ham

7 Everton

8 West Brom

9 Leeds

10 Ipswich

11 Wolves

12 Forest

13 Bolton

14 Villa

15 Wimbledon

16 Leicester

You'd think he'd at least remember last year's winners, Leicester, as they beat us in the semi-final.

Yeah, pretty easy to reel them off if you Google it I guess.  My interest probably started around 1970, and since then I "remember" very few sites outside of the top 6 or so winning it.  Wimbledon, I grant you, one I remember but missed, and yes I remember Leicester last year, but I put them up with the better teams as well.  The FA Cup is rarely won by a surprise team or complete underdog, ergo relatively boring for many fans.

Scored the winner against Everton recently, so maybe they don't hate him that much at the moment.

They've been safe for quite a while so I'm not bothered about their results now. But I am still keeping an eye open on Everton's ...

Who can forget the fairytale rags-to-riches stories of plucky underdog minnows like Everton and Leeds when they won the FA Cup against all the odds in the 1970s and 1980s.

I can’t believe he forgot the back to back triumphs of outsiders Forest and Bolton winning it in 1958 and 59

Leeds hadn't done much of note until the Don Revie era. So yes, they were relative minnows until their successful period in the late 60s and 70s.

They were league champions in 1969, Inter city fairs cup winners in 68 and 71 and won the league again in 74. They were one of the top clubs in Europe when they won the FA cup.

I did . You got it wrong.

He said, and I quote “" In my lifetime (and I'm nearly pensionable), I can only remember us, Sunderland, Coventry, Wigan and the Skates winning it outside of the top sides.

You’ve then gone and listed some FA Cup winners who were top sides at the time they won the cup.

So, you’ve completely misjudged the context you thought you were replying to.

Yet again he’s failed. It’s becoming an all to common trend

So the same lot who always want us (rightfully) to prioritise the cup are now saying the cup is tedious. Right let’s focus on 14th over 16th place then

Don’t forget that getting relegated is good too because it means we win more games and get more 3pm kick offs but at the likely expense of ever competing for the FA Cup again

I always find relegation battles more tense and exciting than the promotion ones. But this season has fizzled out a bit prematurely. The Championship has been done for a while now, even with the surprise hurdle of Paul Ince who somehow has done a good job. Weird.

L1 all but over as well. Sunderland keeping the other end a little busy.... will they make it, or are they set to fight Pompey for another year of 'who loves League One the most!?'

That's Derby down.

Was always going to be tough for them to avoid the drop.   Don't know the "ins and outs", but they aren't the first 'big' club to end up in league one, as we well know.

I'd read that they could still have further deductions awaiting them. And the stadium is owned by the outgoing owner, and not the club. L1&2 did remove their wage cap proposals. so that might prevent yet another issue as they go down a level.

I wonder if it's because we went through a spell where we had a few of them, so we relate to it more? 🙂

Indubitably. I've only even known us fight for four proper promotions, but bloody loads of bottom end battles. And some of them were more epic than words could describe!

(saying that, the Championship battle with Whu was awesome)

Surely the Skates were a top side when they won it. I' sure they told us they were "massive", maybe I just missed the last word of the sentence.

It really is no surprise that two thirds of the finalists are Top 6 sides (assuming this means the current Big 6), though 22 years ago there wasn't a Big 6, and not really sure there is now. Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool have always (well post War) contributed to the FA Cup finals massively, teams like Everton, Leeds, even Villa and Forest and maybe Derby were all top teams in their day. If smaller teams made the Final more than 1 in 3 times then it wouldn't really be a surprise/shock, would it? That said we all know they rig the draw these days so its no surprise anyway.

United Liverpool tonight then, I’m torn somewhere between wanting United to get some kind of result and helping deny Liverpool the title or wanting United to get done about 8-0.

Curious game as on recent form of both - you can see Liverpool taking them apart without breaking sweat.

United win all the way, anyone but Liverpool for the title.

If it's 9-0 we'll probably get a mention....or two.

I really don't want Liverpool to win the title, but there again, when they were beating Man City 2-0 and then 3-0 last weekend, I thought City showed what bunch of "bad loser" self-entitled, dirty bastards they can be too. It went beyond "shithousery" in my opinion - there were some nasty tackles in there.

I'd settle for Liverpool winning 9-0 tonight and then losing to us to scupper their title chances.

I’m not too enthused regarding Fulham coming back up, or Bournemouth for that matter, I  would much rather see someone less familiar get promoted, maybe Forest will still make it.

This Fulham side might be the best we've seen come up in a while. Going to make it harder next season. Then again, they may lose a couple of key figures in the summer.

I think they will be very similar to before. They can't play this style in the EPL. They will be battered most weeks. And 40 goal Mitrovic, he'll be luck to get eight I reckon.

Mitro tends to put up decentish numbers when he is played. In his two full prem seasons where he regularly started he got 13 and 14 goal involvements (9 and 11 goals respectively). Not world beating but decent enough. Off the back of a season with 38 goals and 7 assist in 39 matches so far I back him to have a decent time in the prem.

Radio the other night saying that the Championship had a number of very capable strikers. But both Mitrovic and Solanke have really struggled at a higher level. Pukki struggled again this season too. They mentioned Watkins too. He's 8 from 28 this season.

Do Liverpool always win the toss-up at home or are the opposing captains too afraid to turn them around ?

The former captain of my local team returned this season, and turned it round from the toss up. I'd not seen it there for ages, and there was a massive moan from the crowd at it. By massive, I mean both men *and* the dog. But it definitely has wind up potential.
