Dman Posted 12 April, 2022 Share Posted 12 April, 2022 (edited) Someone needs to tell glen hoddle about confirmation bias. Those chances only had an XG of 0.5 and 0.4. But what does hoddle know about w chance that should be taken, he only played for England in the World Cup. Sarnia Cherie Posted 13 April, 2022 Share Posted 13 April, 2022 There have been 2 fantastic games over the past few days. Man City v Liverpool and Real Madrid v Chelsea. Both matches have showcased football at its finest. The work rate, determination and energy from every player was a joy to watch. The passion from their managers, plain to see. Chelsea gave themselves a mountain to climb for the 2nd leg and at 3-0 up at the Bernabeu I thought they had pulled it off but it was not to be. Hugely disappointing for their supporters but for the neutrals a wonderful match.
LiberalCommunist Posted 13 April, 2022 Share Posted 13 April, 2022 As Villareal broke for that last chance, it seemed to play out in slow motion. Like you knew what was coming. He can cross and pass the ball, but cannot defend, his positioning is appalling. For England, any time he’s played, he’s been crap. Which was the debate that was had with Twrong last week and subsequently proven by him being exposed this week against city. Miles behind James & Walker. I’d even put tripper and maybe KWP ahead of him for England. Bang average player.

The Left Back Posted 13 April, 2022 Share Posted 13 April, 2022 James for me is the best allrounder. I really like everything about his game. TAA, Walker, Trippier and KWP are all good enough for England. It's definitely a position of depth and I feel sorry for KWP (and potentially Tino) in relation to getting international caps.

That is being incredibly harsh on someone who has broken a number of assists records in the PL as well as the output he brings. Just because there are 2 good CB's who cover for him means little, I don't think Walker/KWP/Trippier could do it for Liverpool the way he does. He is a player who works really well in the Liverpool system, might not work in others and there is no shame in that.

TAA is probably slightly better going forward, but as we said he had a spell on sunday where we was ripped apart against City. As Englands centre backs are no where near the level of Liverpools then that's why i'd go for James better all rounder, followed by Walker although not much in that. With TAA as third choice. Tripper and KWP behind them, although the fact that Tripper and KWP can also play left back might mean they are preferred. Great problem to have though having 5 players competing for that spot. Think it was Duckhunter who made a very valid point, the really top players deliver when it matters. Pulisic two good chances, missed, Benzema, scores, Modric produces a bit of sheer brillaince to pull them back in to it. It's all very well scoring the 3rd in a 3-0 win, or the consolation in a 3-1 loss, but that's what seperates the good from the great, doing it when it matters.
whelk Posted 13 April, 2022 Author Share Posted 13 April, 2022 (edited) I get the Modric pass was decent but unbelievable fawning over it. Technique is a piece of piss really but some pundits seem to think it is wondrous that a ball can be kicked with outside of the boot. A bit similar to chipping the keeper. Looks deft when comes off but most players at any level are capable of doing albeit the art is is in when to do and right power. Go down your local park with 100 balls, see how many you could put right in perfect stride of the attacker from 30 yards, then come back and say how much of a ‘piece of piss’. He was moaning that they're going twice a week and the sessions are very similar every week, what's the point of being able to do 10 keep ups with the outside of your foot etc. Exactly the point, mastery is practising the same skill over and over again, it might be boring for watching parents but it isnt about us and thats how it works, the kids dont seem to find it dull as they go home and practise in the garden for hours and that's why our kids are head and shoulders over the other kids in their saturday team. Anyway point being i'm sure some players could do that pass as well, but you dont see many doing it against the European champions when theyre desperate for a goal. Anyone could lump the ball with the outside of their foot, 8 or 9 times out of 10, they’ll chunk it straight to the keeper or for a goal kick. To land it perfectly in the attackers stride, whilst bending it away from the keeper from about 35/40 yards, it was fantastic. To reference your earlier post, if you need to go to special training for a few months to master it, it’s clearly not a piece of piss.
