We’ve sold a 29 year old, injury prone version of Beattie, with one year left on his contract, who didn’t want to be here for £30m. I’m actually mildly impressed, I was expecting it to be nearer £20m and to Spurs.

Look at the team tonight, it's terrible. Tella, Redmond, Adams? Where are the goals? Stephens still in defence?  The way we limped home last season with spineless, pathetic displays, I think we are going to be in a relegation battle all season, I'm not sure they have the guts to survive. Is the 30 million worth going down?

Excuse choice of language. Don’t post much but fuck me, totally done with Saints.

Calm down dear, all will be fine

Why are you judging the team on the 4th choice centre back and multiple 1st team players being rested for Saturday?

Only a tiny handful of clubs in football history have received £30m for a player with 1 year of contract left.

Are you alredy writing off any replacement we sign?

There are many reasons to feel disillusioned about Premier League football, and also how SFC has been run in the past few years.

Selling a bloke with a dodgy knee and poor injury record, aged 29, in the last year of his contract isn't one of them though.

Pretty much. Our track record for the majority of our signings isn't good these days. That's if we even spend the money.

We just got £25M-£30M for a player with a dodgy injury record, who is pushing 30, going into the last year of his contract, and didn't want to be here.

That's great business.

I get you're pissed off, but we've had a decent window so far, and we are going to sign Armstrong who looks a great replacement.

When you wake up in the morning you'll realise this is a contender for absolute bed wetter post of the summer 🙃.

Quite the opposite, recent years have seen a big improvement in our recruitment after a dodgy spell.

You really can’t call Armstrong a great replacement for a proven PL goal scorer. He’s never scored a PL goal, we have no idea if he can do it at this level.

Is anyone really surprised at this? I bet most posters on here would move to a firm doing the same job for twice the money! £30 million for a 29 year old who is injury prone  to me is a pretty good piece of business.

Yeah exactly this. We don't have Reed running the show anymore, even if some of his mistakes are still kicking about.

People crying about this, honestly - it was very likely he was going to be sold this summer. We've clearly had a good offer in and can use it on replacements.

Are folks going to shit the bed when vestergard goes as well? 🙄

Not sure about that.  as injury prone Ings is, his goals kept us up last season. His replacement needs to be good.

Neither had Rickie Lambert

Nor had Ollie Watkins before AV signed him...

Championship strikers tend to do well in the Premier League.

Yeah but we'll never be in a position to sign a proven PL goalscorer.

Ings' replacement will have to hit the ground running, it's a signing the club have to get spot on and then some.

Well done Danny - got your champions league team then. Don’t make me laugh. He moved for £ and nothing else.

overall not a bad deal for us if we reinvest in two decent strikers

Reckon we've got a good deal. It opens doors. And I trust present Board to spend the money well. Danny did well but his best days are over and we got them. Good business for a welcome change

Looks like Ward-Prowse was the Patsy all along, they were really after Ings.  To be fair to Danny he has made no secret of always wanting to play for Aston Villa and live in the midlands. I have no doubt that he has the potential to be the new Charles N'Zogbia.

Armstrong will be no better than Adams.

we will relegation fodder next year.

SFC were going to be anyway with Ings, KL shafted the club by selling to Gao who is probably just looking to move money out of China and Les Reed then added huge shavings of incompetence truffle, doing more to ruin SFC than Lowe, Wilde and Askham together. Milan Mandaric honestly couldn’t have done a better demolition job if he was trying deliberately to earn praise at the rusty park.

Getting £30m for someone who would have miss half of the season however great he was in 2020/21 - minus £2m to Liverpool - ain’t the problem.

He only scored 3 more than Adams.

Decent fee. Didn't go to Spurs. Perhaps I was naive in thinking that he genuinely wanted to challenge himself "at the top level", even if that meant being a back up. Villa seems an odd move.

Just because it's decent business doesn't mean we shouldn't be a bit wary of how it will impact us on the field though, I'm finding the dismissive tone here rather surprising. He's clearly a class above most of our players, and when that class is in front of goal it's going to be hard to replace. Adams has qualities, but composure in front of goal isn't one them unfortunately.

We will struggle to replace him, even for £25m, unless our recruitment is really firing. That being said, at least with £25m we have a chance to find someone decent, or bolster the squad elsewhere.

Very disappointed to see our best striker leave but can understand it from the club's perspective considering the contract situation. Can definitely not afford to lose Vestergaard or JWP now though, it's going to be tough enough next season with them let alone without (even if we do sign Armstrong).

Writing off a team before seeing who the replacement is... definitely reactionary!

The replacement is an unproven championship player

Mane, VVD, and Wanyama were all unproven in England when we signed them. Plenty of Championship players also make the step up having been up to then 'unproven'.

Not sure what exactly else the club should have done differently

they offered him a very good contract where he would have been top earner, which he refused because he wanted to higher wages mid table villa could probably afford. Not getting anything for him would be far more damaging than selling now.

Wouldn’t worry too much if it was spurs etc. But if we can’t compete with the likes of Villa who were in the Championship only a couple of years ago what hope have we really got…

Don't think you get it. He didn't want to stay. He could have run down his contract. We got £25m+ for a player with one year on his contract and a dodgy fitness record.

Yes, when he was good, he was very good. But we weren't going to get any more out if him, so thanks and goodbye. Result for Saints.

He’s right about the finances though. We’ve had 10 Of premier league money for all but the first two pretty much funded all signings by sales, yet we’re on our arse whist Villa have been here two seasons yet have signed 6 players in that time for more than our transfer record. It’s a joke that we’re looking in the bargain bucket. Yes we’ve made mad signings but so has everyone else and let’s not forget all these bad signings were funded by sales
