Are you saying you don't want Wayne Bridge and James Beattie back next season?

Big tall guy, kept himself in good shape.

Reads the game and a good talker.

Decent with the ball at his feet.

I'd definitely have in goal over Bazanu,

Agree to some extent, although it goes to show the regard subsequent players are held in.

True but it’s just weird nostalgia.

Wilcox and Martin are hardly going to have a list titled “Ex-players the fans might like”

What a load of old pony.

His last game prior to joining  Chelsea was the Champions league final where he captained PSG, was still playing for Brazil, was about 5 years younger, and was a far better player than Jose ever was . Other than that, I can see the similarities…

Fonte also captained Lille in the champions league and captained them to a Ligue 1 title.

He is a leader, if he had been here last season, there is way he would have tolered groups in the dressing room or standards going down.

JWP didn t sort it out which shows what a leader he is, a captain doesn t lead by example, we need a voice in the dressing room.

Maybe get Robbie Keane in as well, scored a couple in Soccer aid so still pretty sharp

Too late, Maccabi Tel Aviv snapped him up as their new manager.

As a coach/4th choice perhaps but not a starter.

Graziano Pelle, anyone? Free agent, no plans for retirement announced.

Dani Osvaldo isn't contracted to a football team either... oh wait...

I’m amazed none of the Saints Twitter tribe have picked up that Morgan Schneiderlin is also out of contract. 😂

Cat out of the bag now, incoming!  #controversial

He's had a brilliant few years at Lille so fair play to him, I certainly wouldn't be any more worried seeing him in our team than I would be with our other options

As for age, Everton are signing 38 year old Ashley Young from Villa and Brighton have signed 37 year old James Milner.

We missed out on another experienced player could have bought Yosh back to help him settle:

📝 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘: Kazuyoshi Miura, the oldest professional footballer on the planet, has extended his contract at UD Oliveirense! 🇯🇵🇵🇹

The Japanese striker will be 57-years old when his contract ends.

Suggests to me that we are probably going to sell Tadanari Lee

Bringing back Jose Fonte?.  This is a head / heart question isn't it?.  Many may say he's too old, but good  players can outlast even younger talents.

Milner and Young will still be Prem. players next season... and it's not as if we would expect Fonte to play all 46 games + cup matches.

He was fit and good enough to start for Lille last season and still remained in the Portugal squad until a while back.

You can't ignore the sort of career that he had and having him around for a year or two.. on a free transfer .... is surely a no-brainer.

with the gossip about  CB's soon to be departing Saints, his knowledge and experience both on-and-off the pitch would be invaluable.

Maybe we could get Jimmy Case back then. Age no barrier. 🙄😄

Will probably still do a good rendition of ‘King of the Road’ at the end of season dinner even if he doesn’t play much.

A shame if true in one way but we can get the same positives he would bring from elsewhere.

Two years ago people were saying that about JWP, Long, Walcott, Romeu and Willy, all in the same squad... and we were still crap. TBH I think it's more a reflection of how low Saints fans expectations have fallen that players are considered worth having, simply by being a nice lad without any convictions for affray and sexual offences.

Fonte didn't have some sort of superpower when he was here and he certainly doesn't aged 39. We need to go and find another Dean Hammond, who can do it now AND play well, in his prime, 40 times a season.

I think, even when it comes to bringing in experience, SR are looking to have some sort of sell on potential. Aribo, despite how that turned out, for example (a terrible example. Why didn't my brain cell come up with better there. 🙂 ).

I think some of our departed figures like Redmond had more of a voice., if not leadership. Others who questioned the automatisms of Ralph's style left as well (which there are arguments for as well). I thought Romeu's absence was missed all round. Not leadership enough to prevent an abject run with him in the team though.

In the end some of the squad we have, have to look to themselves to becoem leaders of the group. If we have absolutely none like that, then Martin's going to ahve to bring them in. That's not an easy fit, in an already bloated, cliquey squad. So, hopefully as amny of those who don't have the will for it, will be the ones moved on.

They are in the Champions League this season. We certainly couldn't have offered him that.

Probably the right place and level for Jose now, good luck to him. I’ve been to the Braga FC stadium (municipal) and its nuts and superb. One end is built into the side of a rockface and the local nickname translates to ‘the quarry’.

Good enough for the Champions League and then Europa League to some, not good enough for 20 games in the Championship to others. Yet another reason to ignore the "Remember when everyone on here said X" posts.

Yes it’s such a good idea signing a near 40 year old for the Championship I wonder why people are not onboard with the genius posters?

Good to see Jose playing tonight for Sporting Braga versus Panathinaikos in the Champions League.

I was amused to see one of the Panathinaikos players is called JUANKAR, he should be playing for Pompey.

I watched that game too. Braga looked very good as they went through to the group stage, in front of a massive, passionate Greek crowd, with a 1-0 away win. The commentator summed it up: "At 39, fabulous. That's why they brought him in."

He's had a remarkable late career.  It means he'll become the first player to win his first league title, his first European Championship, his first 50 caps for his country and his first 20 Champions League games all in his 30s. You could subtract one or two of those and he'd still be the first: a truly remarkable player.

And there are people who thought he wouldn't be able to do it for us in the Championship.

No, mainly people thinking maybe we all get on with our lives than just mooning over old players that used to play for us, especially when they are going to be 40 this year.

Maybe there are other football players on this planet who are more appropriate for us right now.

If he never played for us no fucker would be suggesting we sign him for this season.

Anyway, we all look forward to Nordic Saint writing the 357th version of his Jose Fonte tribute post the very next time he plays a match on TV.

Experienced centreback, proven captain and leader, strengths were always reading of the game and ball playing ability rather than pace, always had top levels of fitness and professionalism, knows and loves the area so would have no issue settling in, available on a free transfer, would probably accept a lower wage than someone with his playing record would normally demand due to his history with the club...

There are a lot of other footballers who would be a good fit for us but to pretend Fonte wouldn't have been a very good option for a season in the Championship when he's now keeping clean sheets in the Champions League is just being absurdly stubborn.

He was never coming to us, he's never going to play for us again and we do not need him to get promoted.

The fact that you are telling yourself little fairy stories - he'll accept lower wages because he loves the super Saints - just shows this is a silly wet dream and not grounded in any reality whatsoever.

Get over it.

Jose Fonte was brilliant for us. But he was never coming back, equally why risk coming back at 39, times have moved on.

All this fawning over former players is a bit much.

Do you think if we got Fonte, Hooiveld, Davis, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Guly, Lambert we’d be anything like we were before - nope, didn’t think so. 😂

Move on, haha!

Great interview with Fonte by Adam Blackmore on Solent just now. Worth a listen on playback if you didn't catch it. Still talking about Saints as "us" and "we" and obviously still loves the club. Legend.

Its a really good interview and he comes across very well. Recall Parsons saying they have made a big effort to be more welxoming of ex players so hopefully they will get him along to a game soon at the very least.

I know it's probably due to who he is talking to, but I absolutely love that he thinks saints is the highlight of his career given that he won the Euros and the French league.

Portuguese report suggesting he has had an offer to return to Saints in some capacity...

Three offers from Portugal, one from England.

At the end of the Blackmore interview he suggested his biggest priority is to be able to spend more time with his family and it sounded like they are still based here...
