Cabrone Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 Germans have had an odd tournament. Pretty pedestrian against the French, sparked back to life against the Portugese and then back to plodders against Hungary. They made chances last night but couldn't convert. Seems to me they lack an out and out striker, instead they have a bunch of attacking players. Still think they have too much for England though. Not sure of another opponent we have a a track record of going out to, Argentina (twice as I recall), and more recently (well this century) Portugal were our undoing at a couple of tournaments. I don't think anyone is contesting that we have played and lost to Germany in tournament football few times. I've been following England since 86 world cup, I get it. But saying stuff like "for once, can't we play someone else" is just dopey. Anyway, who gives a shit.

Wasn't 1972 a qualifying game ? If so thought we lost one leg (at home),2-0 or 3-1. It's 2021. I couldn't give a monkeys what happened nearly 50 years ago. TWar Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 I think Germany are going to smash us, to be honest. Obviously hope we pull something out the bag but we have looked very average this euros. Either way, fingers crossed. As for the prediction as that does sound fun R16 - Wales, Italy, NL, Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden QF - France, Belgium, NL, Germany SF - Germany, Belgium Winners - Belgium I will say Italy Belgium is pretty 50/50 as is France Belgium and if either beat them they will probably go on to be winners. We have, but we still finished top of the group and haven’t conceded a goal. Not great, but done enough. Portugal won the thing buy drawing 3 games, in a really weak group). Winners of tournaments tend to build up their performances. Southgate is right in that we have more to come, Kane has looked way out of his depth and is due a good game and I think Grealish will really grow into the tournament now. Germany aren’t the team they used to be. I think if we were in their shoes, we wouldn’t be confident. Especially after just scrapping a draw against Hungry. This issue is we’re used to heart ache and getting stung and have a history of that from Germany as well. However as MLG likes to say, what does something that happened 20 years ago have any impact on what happens today. I have faith, Maguire and Henderson back will give us a bit more solidity and experience and I think going forward, when on form, we’re as good as anyone. It’ll be a 50/50 game, if we can pull through, I think we could go the whole way.

nta786 Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 (edited) I said it before, this game is like our semi-final, I'm bloody excited for it though but the timing of the game is an absolute killer. Expect laptops around the country to shut down at 4:30pm!!! It's a 50/50 game in my opinion, I'd like to see us English fans and media alike to be slightly more confident than what I have read, I can imagine Germany will be more than up for it [it helps having 4 WCs and 3 ECs I guess] and given the way the draw has played out can see them begrudgingly reach the final if they were to do us over. Won all their group games and get rewarded with a game against Portugal, then (likely) Italy, France, then whoever the other finalist is (Germany?). CB Fry Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 I can't see Belgium doing it. They seem destined to be one of those golden generation teams packed with stars that don't win shit. At some point one of the big boys like France, Italy or Germany will crush them. Euros do throw us more shock winners than World Cups but I suppose Belgium wouldn't be a shock like Greece or Denmark because they are too good on paper. If you have seen the Germans as long as I have you know to never ever back against them. I've seen bang average German sides still get to the final (2002 springs to mind and I think the 82\86 sides were no great shakes). They have a mental resilience that England can only dream of and you cannot ever write them off. I remember the 86 team were 2-0 down and looked dead and buried. They pulled it back before the Argies smashed a late winner. Germany plays the kind of football England would play if they had confidence, it seems to be in their psyche (and ours sadly). If England play the Portugal Germany then we'll get done, if England play the France\Hungary Germany we *might* just get past them but I wouldn't bet on it. Sweet dee Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 The way they came back and finished second, the fact they have England next, at Wembley, the then perceived easier route, then the final also at Wembley, already been written off, I think Germany are winning this tournament 😂 I'd be feeling more confident if we were playing them in Germany to be honest

Mystic Force Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 No Foden please, is hair annoys me, plus I don't think he is as good as he believes he is. I Blame him for lack of service to Kane in the first two games because he was more interested in passing between him and Philips on the right hand side than actually creating a chance for others. For once I am not too concerned about playing Germany, they are no way as good as in past years and there defense looks vulnerable to a a bit of pace.

Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 24 June, 2021 Share Posted 24 June, 2021 I think we'll beat Germany and then Sweden or The Ukraine pose about as much of a threat as Croatia and the Czech Republic did. It's a bit of a joke really. How can you be the best side in Europe when all of the best teams are on the opposite side of the draw and you can't face them until the final? If we were on the other side of the draw and facing the likes, of Italy, Portugal, France, Spain or Belgium it would be a very different story. The fact is, we stand a good chance of making the semi-final or the final without playing a really decent team.
