I seriously think we should look into employing foreign referees. If we recruit the best foreign players why not do the same with referees?

I find it strange that we have crap football referees but excellent Rugby ones and cricket umpires

Both sports where the onfield official isn't afraid to be overruled by the "VAR" system.

That maybe true but they were better even before VAR probably due to the culture and acceptance of the odd bad decision by the players

No way. It is a test of skill and strength of mind. A lottery would be picking the winner out of a hat.

Yes but if Eastleigh Town took on Brazil at penalties they would stand a decent chance. Of course it isn’t completely random. But going into a penalty shoot no one can ever confidently declare who is favourite to win hence the term ‘lottery’

The strength of mind is key but that isn’t proportionate to the skill of player.  And not like these players when get to level can kick to bottom corner, give the eyes to keeper etc and others of a lesser skill can’t pick out bottom corner as don’t yet have the skill

No they wouldn’t. Brazil would still be far, far better in all the key areas, including mental conditioning.

In cricket the Umpires decision was final but there were plenty of examples where they were wrong or homers etc . Internationals then introduced neutral umpires and dissent was clamped down on , then came technology . I have no idea how accurate it actually is but it seems to be widely accepted as OK by the teams . Snicko shows how wrong you can be and the ball tracking seems to be a good guide . When it was introduced it was thought the Umpires were reluctant to take the decision and refered it to the third umpire too often . It has settled down well now and only area of issue tend to be catches where it may have touched the ground and run outs where it is very close but generally works OK compared to the old days.

Rugby has more issues as it is difficult to see sometimes if a try has been touched down and the same issues with say a foot touching the white line by millimetres so given as in touch and no try . Refs do tend to have their reputations for whistle blowing or letting the game flow and dissent has been clamped down on as well.

So football needs to up it's game on VAR and how it's used and Refs need better oversight , too many have reps for cards or getting it wrong but are still given matches.

Henderson is the perfect example of a top player who cant score from, the spot, how many misses he had now? 5? in a row? LOL.

I agree pens is lotto, but you would expect better players ( Not including Henderson ) to score.

So in 50 penalty shootouts you’d confidently predict Brazil woudl win all 50 as it is all to do with skill?

Strong mental conditioning on display here. From 45 seconds in

But Ralph doing a bad job does not influence Mike Dean. But Mike Dean doing a bad job very much effects Ralph.

That just isn't fair.

We need better from the refs and the guys at the top running the show. They are all far too comfortable.

Eastleigh would stand a better chance against Brazil on penalties than over a 90-120 minute match, for sure. But they'd still be a huge underdog. A single slip on a penalty shoot out can be decisive, whereas these can be recovered from in normal play (see Croatia's first goal yesterday...).

I think I'd make Brazil 98%-99% to win a match v Eastleigh and about 90%+ to win an penalties.

Southgate obviously thinks that lineup is the best way to win tonight but it’s not the only way and so negative and uninspiring that if we lose, it has to be his last game.

If we win the tournament like this then brilliant and he’ll rightfully receive the plaudits but with the attacking talent we have, there was an opportunity to try and do it in style.

Nerves starting to kick in now.

This tournament just seems like such a huge opportunity now, with that draw. Really hope the team doesn’t waste it.

It will all depend on the full backs, if they're allowed to go forward then we stand a chance, if they're instructed to stay back like vs Scotland then we're playing for penalties or a lucky goal from a set piece (or Neuer brain fart).

Looks too negative to me, 5 defenders and two central midfielders that offer nothing going forward. Hopefully Southgate has a cunning plan.

I agree, but hope we are both wrong. Surely we aren’t playing for penalties…….😮😬

My god football fans are retards - why boo the German national anthem 🤦‍♂️

It’s quite the mathematical conundrum. JWP would clearly score the winning penalty but if he’s on the pitch then he’d have already bagged 2 or 3 free kick goals so does it even go to penalties?

You do not see the top sides play like this.

All this talk of 3 at the back is bollox as it’s 5 at the back.

Need to stop these 2 Kante wannabes and play someone more creative in the middle.
