kelkel31 Posted 29 May, 2021 Share Posted 29 May, 2021 13 hours ago, Whitey Grandad said: 🤫 I never intended to imply that any of it was secret, but perhaps the reason that he felt able to have such a discussion with me was because he felt that I was a model of discretion? He had done his research before calling and knew my background which meant that we were able to discuss the business reasons behind this plan freely and openly. So here’s my take on it. These views are mine alone and I wouldn’t want to misrepresent anybody. The club wants to make more money out of match day attendance and they consider that we have one of the lowest pricing structures in the Premier League. The central Kingsland is viewed as a premium location that is in high demand and they feel that it should be generating more income. That then raises the question of where that extra money is going to come from. When you strip it down this move is nothing other than a monster price hike dressed up with a bit of padding. So who is going to buy into it? Are the present occupants going to grimace and bear it, in which case they have succeeded in their heist, or are we all going to shuffle along and see these seats gobbled up by supporters from elsewhere in the stadium? In principle these seats can only be occupied by Saints supporters but are there several hundred out there who are so desperate that they are willing to pay a thousand pounds a year to watch what is on offer? It was clear from our chat that Mr. AC-J does understand the history and background of a club such as ours and understands my sentiments but my response was to quote Sir Humphrey Appleby and say, “Very brave”. The point is that if you consider that you are sitting in the best position in the stadium then any move elsewhere is a downgrade. Having moved from that position there is then no incentive to hang onto your Season Ticket from one year to the next. Friendships that have been built over decades have be trashed and if you let your ticket go you can always get always get another one some other time. Maybe. I feel that the club have concentrated on comparing Southampton FC with other Premier League clubs and have not considered how what they offer compares with other demands on our wallets. £2000 a year for two tickets would go quite some way elsewhere. You could get a fortnight’s all-inclusive cruise for that. Maybe membership of a golf club but I wouldn’t know. I’m not old enough to play golf I can understand the drive to get more revenue but there’s only so much juice you can squeeze out of a lemon. Out of interest did you ask him anything about how he perceived this type of business model working with the very real possibility that Southampton Football Club doesnt exist in the premier league? On the back of the second half of the season’s performances it’s also arrogance or denial, I’m not sure which.

Although our attendances were still very good in the lower leagues compared to most around us the corporate areas were mostly desolate. St Mary’s looked sparsely populated on TV back then as the Itchen (and away section) were often barely half full, if little changes next season and we drop there’s going to be another big gap welcoming the players onto the pitch opposite the tunnel. In this case, we have been paying more for a better view for years, and like Whitey, I had paid full price, firstly for my son, then for my granddaughter as there were no concessions in this block. The bigger point here is that this block contained a substantial proportion of “customers” who held tickets for 20 years or more. After 10 years we were promised a bonus for staying loyal, that never happened. Now the club wants to reward us with very expensive padded seats. The reality is, as Whitey said previously, a lot of groups who have sat together for many years, paying the top price in that stand, for a good view, will be split up. I personally think that is a poor way to reward such loyalty, and the fact that the plan was executed without first consulting the affected fans possibly tells you all you need to know about what the club thinks. Just as a matter of comparison, I moved into that block when my seats in the corners were closed. The club offered to relocate me anywhere I chose at the same price for that season. The club seems to be going backwards in fan relations, to the extent that being a fan is not a consideration. We are merely numbered customers. Very sad. Not yet, no. It’s an obvious concern though and must surely have been factored into the gamble. Surely? If we were relegated they would obviously have to consider lower prices for the Championship. That might mean removing the padding so let’s hope they keep hold of the old seats In such circumstances it would be an interesting ‘sell’ trying to get their previous customers to come back. But then what would happen if, heaven forbid, we were immediately promoted back again?
Alanh Posted 29 May, 2021 Share Posted 29 May, 2021 I'm always intrigued by the response 'the club treat us like customers rather than fans. Surely the difference is that fans will do arguably irrational things because of devotion whereas customers will shop around to get the best deal possible. By adding padded seats and offering them to existing occupants they are treating them as fans, but with the opportunity to be a customer by moving elsewhere at a cheaper price. Not saying its not inconvenient or distressing. I've been there as I used to have a season ticket in the centre Kingsland but moved a couple of blocks across when it became a premium price location. Charlie Wayman Posted 29 May, 2021 Share Posted 29 May, 2021 The simple answer is don't be suckers, don't get mugged! Getting hooked up yearning for a seat that you have sat in for umpteen years is a mugs game and one that inevitably you will lose sooner or later as prices soar. Scraping together the extra money to secure it today will not guarantee you anything next year. As others have said the football won't be any better so if you have to move to another block to watch it and to stay within your budget so be it. Even better just stick two fingers up at them and walk away, There will be nothing going on there that you will miss for long. Fact is post Covid with social distancing and reduced attendances all seats will eventually become more expensive just to generate the income to keep he club running. What I am puzzled about is that these simple economics will apply to planes, cruise ships, trains and everything in future so why does the club think it necessary to dress it up as "an improved experience" and by sticking padding on a few seats? Lots of people wanted to fly on Concorde but never did as they couldn't afford it. Lots of people wanted to dine at The Ivy but never did as they couldn't afford it. The rich have always had first dibs at the best of everything and always will. Get used to the idea that for most of us, more and more affordable pleasures that we have always taken for granted will become less and less affordable. Premier league football is no exception to this paradigm. The fact that club football's origins lay in working class communities has become irrelevant, only money matters now; those who can pay will always win!

They really only care about selling my seat each week, so have only ever done the bare minimum to drive any loyalty (as they don’t need to). The difference between a customer and a fan is simple. As a customer, if I get poor service I go to another outlet. As a fan, I am not going to go to the next nearest club in the PL, Championship, or League 1. The vote will likely be that I will not renew at all. A loss for me, more than for the club. It was the failure to understand the distinction between fans and customers that the owners of the clubs who were going to go off to the super league failed to grasp. Southampton FC were against that proposal, but in the way they have treated a section of fans, they have failed to understand that they themselves are showing the same disdain for fans, by treating them as customers, and treating them poorly. The club has severed their relationship with 500 already high paying fans, and severed the relationships that those fans had with each other in a number of cases. as I said before, very sad.

SaintBobby Posted 30 May, 2021 Share Posted 30 May, 2021 It’s terrible timing. It’s also a weird price point. I have season tickets in the Channon suite/Saints bar. They are £1,600 a pop. A pricey, luxury item for sure. But in addition to the coveted padded seat on the halfway line, you get 3 free drinks a game, a reasonably adequate lunch, a free programme and access to the lounge 2 hours before and after the match, interviews with ex-players, lots of screens showing Sky/BT Sports (and the early/late kick off matches). No real queues for the toilets - and for smokers you can pop out for a smoke at any time. Appreciate that it’s not an option for everyone and the atmosphere is pretty dire in that part of the stadium, but if people are tempted to buy a very expensive season ticket, that seems a way better deal than £1,000 to just get a cushion.

I can see them selling a large chunk at £65 odd for the likes of liverpool, Man U but cant see them having many takers for £50 for the lkes of Burnley, or Palace. Unless we start well, my guess is attendances will be the lowest for some time, this season. Can’t solely blame the club on this though, they’re just effectively copying the market. The premier league is becoming a joke, they’re all for the fans when they need their support to oppose the Super League, but couldn’t give a shit when it’s to line their pockets. given we’ve absolutely no chance of winning any silverware, getting into Europe any time soon, the sooner we get relegated and cleanse our support of the American/Chinese/modern fan market, the better in my opinion.
East Kent Saint Posted 13 August, 2021 Share Posted 13 August, 2021 Do you just get padding or do you get a wider seat ? The normal seats don’t have enough room between them does the padding make it worse ?
