A bit before my time but good to  see a "football" pub in town, know what you mean about the half and half scarves but I like the look of the old programmes on the wall, nice bit of nostalgia to chat about over a pint pre match.

Hopefully get a chance to visit next season with crowds back to normal 👍

Claus, Jim Steele? Or have I misunderstood the OP

It may very well have applied to any number of ex-players, particularly the 'Alehouse Brawlers' but of course, in this instance 'boozers' was referring to the establishments rather than the clientele. But I like your thinking.

I see the Painted Wagon has finally opened again after an enforced hold-up - decorated in red and white of course but can't say I like the half-and-half scarves on the walls!

Now if they could just re-open the Warrens, Lord Louis, Spa, Southerner.................

......Eagle, Royal Oak, Kingsland Tavern , Wig&Pen/Running Horse. I'm sure we're only missing about a dozen or so between us of long lost matchday pubs.

Christ the Eagle takes me back. My grandad and uncle used to take me in there during their 'lunch hour'. They'd play cards and sink 4 or 5 pints before taking me back to work with them - bitumen roofing of all things, after a skin-full in a short period of time - driving of course too :( This was maybe 1980-81, I'd have been 7 years old.

They then moved to the Buff's club (I think it was called) in Albert Road right by the Aviation museum. Rough as houses that place.

I think think the last place we all used to go regular was the old dockers club, what is now the 1865 venue I believe?

Great days. Spent most of my youth with my grand parents in their flat on Orchard Lane.

Apologies, I realise I've taken a tangent there. Those boozers listed were full of characters and lots of Saints talk of course.

Club rather than a pub but Hulse Road Social was the gathering point for the first 10-15 years of my Saints supporting days. Not as 'lively' as some of the places mentioned on here though I've learnt in later life.

Wonder if this pub will then be the focus for away fans looking for a bit of 'argy bargy'?

Wrong place for that with the ownership.

As the writer of the Echo article in the first post will remember the Maple Leaff was a decent regular drinking spot before games at the Dell.

Since the move to St Mary's we regularly used the Eagle, the Alex, Varsity (never liked it, no idea why we went there) and then Rockstone.

Pity that 5 Rivers closed during lockdown, great food in there for a post match curry.

Getting off the Hythe ferry straight in the sun... then onto the nags head ..dog and duck and the spa tavern then bedfords .. occasional pop in pot black

You go from Hythe ferry right up to Bedfords? Then to the ground?

That's the long arse way of going about things.
