Most Important Result This Season?

Appreciate we still have 1 game left, and that a win could be really important in terms of prize money / ending on a high, but what do you rank as our most important result this season?

For me it's a toss-up between:

1. Newcastle at home - For the obvious reason that it saw us top of the Premier League for the first time ever; and

2. Chelsea at home - Gritty performance which put an end to the very real threat of losing 9 games in a row (which could have led to all sorts of 999 jokes).

Ralph's tears didn't convince me that a win against the very average bin dippers was worthy of inclusion.

For me it was the semi final against Leicester when we just didn’t show up....  As good a position to win the FA Cup as we would ever likely to be with City, Utd & Liverpool out.  Leicester were pretty crap on the day as well and were there for the taking.

Otherwise we’ve had a comfortable season.  We could have lost every game in 2021 and still stayed up - so I’m not sure any individual league game was important like say Swansea away was a few years ago

I think Burnley.....i know as things have turned out with Fulham and WBA its not as important points wise as it could have been but at 2-0 down and with the recent form that was for all the world game over. I'm still not sure where that performance came from, or why, but it showed the players at least they could still do it and gave everyone a lift.

For me the most important result was the loss to Villa back in January. I believe it was the turning point in our season where we were screwed over royally by several decisions and was followed up by two of our worst performances of our season against Man U and Newcastle. I think if we'd got something from that game like we should have then heads wouldn't have dropped so much and we would have picked up points more consistently over the rest of the season instead of going into a downward spiral we've only just barely come out the other side of.

In terms of best win probably the comeback against Burnley for the same reasons beatlesaint gave.

100% the villa game. Any other ref and we win that 3-1. Minimum. We picked up a couple bad injuries as well, which seemed to cement the dark cloud that followed.

I'm looking forward to some random youtuber doing a video of all the VAR cock ups in the close season, we should be top billing on that.

100% Villa at home too

completely screwed us over if all decisions correct I think we could have won 5 or 6-1 seriously as they would have imploded

then the shit results after might well have not happened either

I do agree with this, but the players and Ralph need to shoulder more of the blame for being so mentally fragile, and think that could be noted more.

Great idea! Send to the refs and FA for a job well done! Not!

It hasn't been a season of many important results really, we were always safe and never really going to threaten the top end.

I'd say the biggest win was against Newcastle at home, just to take us top of the league for that short period. Something many fans have never actually seen, no matter how short a period.

Nothing else has really happened of any importance beyond that.

Most important for me was coming from 2 down to beat Burnley. Ended our terrible run, showed that we do have some fight in us at times and pretty much confirmed our safety.

Favourite game of the season though was the home win vs Everton. They were flying high (top potentially), talk of CL football for them despite the season being young and we absolutely took them apart. Could have been 4 or 5-0. Very enjoyable

Portsmouth 0 Southampton 4.   !!!

What?   That was last last season?  Really?  Gosh! It still seems so fresh in the memory.

Not sure if it's just me, but the last two seasons/years have kinda moulded into one for me anyway

Both the Villa games were interesting, the second one for the robbery suffered but also the first one for encapsulating the pros and cons of Ralph's system in one game. Playing good football and easing into a four nil lead then very fragile at the end and just holding out. This was easily dismissed because we won and in a good place in the league but should have been a warning sign.

Avoiding the Bournemouth banana skin and getting to a Wembley semi was good.

For me, our best result is not knee jerking and sacking Ralph.

I don t think that was ever on the table apart from the usual short term view brigade who are incapable of judging performances over the long term.

This Sunday, as it means this season is finally over.

You must be very depressed in your life.

if you find following Saints to be a suffering, go support a top 6 club.

I love watching Saints and never wish a season to be over and look forward to every game.

What a nice thing to say.

It’s nothing to do with Saints, it’s been a horrific season to be a football fan, I go to 12-13 away games a season normally and have a season ticket, it’s a big part of my social life, I want this season done so we can hopefully get back to going to games normally.

The most important result is surely the 9-0. Brought the club properly back down to reality and highlighted exactly how much work still has to be done.

This.

Though a note for the FA Cup game against Wolves. It showed that we wanted the cup this year... which is even more depressing when you see the abject performance we gave against Leicester.

Maybe not the result but I think tomorrow could be the most important performance. We could still finish anywhere from 17th to 12th depending on results but for me tomorrows performance could say a lot about next season. Who is really up for proving to the boss they want to be part of it next season and who is going to treat is as a counting the days to the beach (good luck with that this year lads) dead rubber.
