Saints at Euro 2020

I think he’s unlucky not to go and I’m genuinely disappointed for him as he deserved a shot.

As above really, it’s the principle of him not being picked (plays for us) that’s annoying and not necessarily the blind belief that he was going to rock up and bang in a worldly winner in injury time of the final.

Jesus, you must be Always. Even if you are not your just as irratating.

No one's got a biase against JWP, some of us are realistic enough, and without any biase because he is a saints player, to form an opinion that he is not International class, that's all. Some people!!.

😭

Yawn,  whatever

What is the point of Southgate putting players on the pitch who aren't in the tournament squad ?

They're still standby players and would need to be able to able to slot in if called.

England don't get a great deal of time together so the more match time the better.

Surely he would be better served using the 26 that he has named.

TAA now injured and unable to walk off around the pitch without 2 guys holding up. Quality pick there Gareth at least Klopp won't be able to moan at you for picking him...

Not forgetting Henderson, Grealish & Kane are nailed on to get injured.

Henderson already IS.

Leaves the door ajar for JWP maybe?

(Waves red rag in Lord D's face...)

Tbf TAA is a blow.

It really isn't. He's done little all season and Walker and James are better than him right now. He isn't the player from last season. He's been picked because Klopp QQ'd a river and it just goes to show the risks of picking players that have had injury issues over the course of the season.

Also, why is tripper in the squad 🤣

If TAA got injured enough to pull him out the squad, I don't think Southgate would select another defender to replace him. I reckon Jesse L would get the first nod, but I don't think JWP would be too far behind.

EDIT: Be funny if JWP ends up getting the call and wins England the Euros with a last minute free kick in the final. V. Funny. (Mind you I will probably be pissed...)

If TAA is to be ruled out, I think I read somewhere that Watkins, Lingard and JWP are the main 3 on standby.

Ramsdale, White and Godfrey basically knew they were only there for the experience to train with the others.

Surely, just surely, the logical choice would be JWP here.

Although I suspect Southgate will take Lingard not to fix the balance of the squad, but purely because he'd be a better option off the bench than JWP if we are chasing the game.

KWP’s got more chance of a call-up.

I think KWP is longer down the line than we think.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be the 5th choice.

Ayling/Matty Cash/KWP all in the same bracket too I'd say.

Next on the list would be Tavernier at Rangers, and perhaps Aarons from Norwich but I'm really pushing it there.

Ben White probably the obvious choice:

- Can play CB, RB and CM

- Used to back 3 or 4 and we look weak at CB with big doubt over Maguire.

- Likely to be in the England setup at the WC and for many years so great experience.

La Liga winner, right back in La Liga team of the year, plays in one of the best defensive teams in the world under probably the best defensive manager in the world, and was arguably our best player at the last World Cup. Wouldn’t say he’s lucky to be there!

Given he was the final sub tonight, behind Godfrey at CB, I would be absolutely shocked if he’s there for any reason other than some experience and to make up the numbers. One for the future, but definitely not there on merit this season.

If anyone gets drafted in it will be 100% Lingard before anyone else.

Not that it's my preference but it will be him.

Just to add. One more injury after TAA though and Prowse will be called. Imo.

All this to keep Klopp happy talk is bollox. Southgate isn't picking players for England to cheer a German manager up. He picked TAA as his end of season form was superb.

Nobody should have to ask why Trippier is in the squad. He's just one La Liga where he's had a brilliant season.

TAA was picked as a free kick and corner expert. Maybe JWP could get in on that basis?

Will add James  looked lost in the 20 minutes vs Austria but so did all those that came on.

Fingers crossed he gets picked but I reckon Southgate will leave us scratching our heads yet again.

He’s so outdated and the football is bland.

Presumably he'll wait to see who else gets crocked in these pointless friendlies before naming any replacements. But JWP should be top of the list.

Lingard or Watkins for me. More creativity / goal threat.

Southgate could/should have already made that tactical call before including TAA. Why would he change his mind now?

Mention of Godfrey coming in as can play right back, why the fuc* do we need to cover rb when we have 3, even 2 still if walker goes cb, no mention at all the jwp has played rb/rwb and cm, surely that makes sense to cover rb if that's what he wants as well as cover for the unfit Henderson and Phillips with his dislocated shoulder

No idea, but I think he will. Let's see. Pointless speculation, and we all have a different opinion.

If Southgate had any sense he'd already have picked JWP given the fitness issues surrounding those other two. So he's unlikely to see the point now.

Still opinion. You'll get the saints tinted spec crowd crowing for JWP, others opining that it'll be a right back for a right back, others who'll say it's an opportunity for a more attack minded player. Personally I think it'll be Lingard or Watkins.

Why is JWP the logical option? His best attribute is his set plays but he isn't going to start games so thats pretty much negated.

Surely Ben White is a better shout? He covers CB, RB and CM and as whoever gets the nod likely won't play a minute anyway why not pick a guy who will be in the squad for the next 5 or 6 tournaments?

Wonder who made the decision to release him at 16?
