Looking forward to the tournament, but hopefully not too many more Saints called up, we can then have a proper pre season this time. Bednarek, Adams and Armstrong will all be done by end of the group stage.

Got a feeling Adams will score against England and become a  Tartan Army legend.

No Antti Niemi in the Scotland squad 😒 but expecting call-ups for Vestergaard (Denmark) and JWP (England) to follow. Ings for England seems unlikely at this stage.

Telegraph reckon Ings could go as a 'wildcard' due to the expanded 26 man squads. When you look at other English players that could be picked, I can't see it. Greenwood/Maddison/Barnes/TAA/James/Dier/ Lingard/Bamford/Watkins are all possibles for it and I think Southgate will look to build for the future and go for someone like Greenwood, Maddison or Barnes.

It'd be nice to see Ings in there, after all he probably would have gone if the tournament had been last year. At least JWP should be in, irrespective of how little game time he will probably get.

With the expanded squads I'd imagine he'll want 3 out and out strikers, Bamford might just get a call up and he might prefer Calvert-Lewin as a Kane-lite but I wouldn't be surprised to see Ings in as the most accomplished goalscorer besides Kane.

I wish we had managers that have the squad for championship finals that are in form no matter what age.

BIB Think you're right there. Just shows how fragile a players career can be. A year ago probably a dead cert for his first major international tournament and Covid puts paid to that. A year on, and even with rose tinted SaintsSpecs on you'd be picking plenty ahead of him on current form/fitness.

Similar to JayRod who looked nailed on for a World Cup place until one dodgy landing and his career was, whilst not excatly ended,   but fair to say he was never the same player again.

That's always been my criticism of England, we seem to be too impulsive and the fact Joe Willock is now being touted ahead of Grealish shows that.

He's had 6 good games in 4 years and is now being tipped for England

Added JWP in, who's been named in the provisional England squad which will be reduced down to 26 men on 1st June.

No place for Ings as expected.

I genuinely thought Ings would get in the provisional one.

But he's a serious injury risk to take.

For the first time ever, I feel a little invested in Scotland. Barring our game, hope they do well. Got some good lads in that squad.

That's always a difficult one to reconcile. On the one hand, Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams, Saints players and good blokes, who you wish well and hope they have good tournaments, on the other seeing them play badly. lose and come back early does have the satisfaction of being a "bollocks to Sturgeon and her cronies" moment.

Given that if England were playing a team of mass murderers and rapists most Scots would still want us to lose I'll probably stick to the "bollocks to Sturgeon" camp.

Of course  if Andy Murray ever stumbles across this it's only an attempt at humour and not really meant.

Former Saint news... FIFA really are loosening eligibility requirements these days.

Fact is stranger than fiction. Southampton did, in fact, provide the first Englishman to be capped by Brazil.

Sidney Pullen left his home city of Southampton with his family when his father got a job in Rio. He became the first foreigner to be capped by Brazil when he played for the Brazilian national team against Argentina, Uruguay and Chile in the first Copa America.

He also won the Campeonato Carioca 6 times, 5 of them with the country's top club, Flamengo. He would have won more titles but his football career was interrupted when he returned to fight for the country of his birth. Pullen later became Flamengo's manager.

And let's not forget the other Saints Academy products in the England squad: Ben White, Tyrone Mings and Luke Shaw.

I'm starting to get excited for the Euros now as it creeps ever closer and I'm actually able to the pub for a couple of games, after World Cup 18 was ruined by my newly born daughter. 😄

Is this going to be the official Euros thread?

What is everyone's choice for England starting XI if everyone is fit? For me it should be:

Henderson, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell, Rice, JWP, Mount, Grealish, Sancho, Kane.

But maybe I'm biased on JWP. I strongly suspect Southgate will start Pickford, Jordan Henderson, Foden and Rashford.

Yeah I think Southgate has his favourites.

I'd be happy to see this line up

Pope or Henderson

James Stones Coady Shaw

         Rice JWP

Grealish  Sancho Foden (fluid 3)

            Kane

Pope is out sadly or I think he'd have got the nod. My guess is it will be between Henderson and Pickford (with Johnstone or Ramsdale as unused 3rd choice) but I reckon Southgate will go with the experience of Pickford. We just have to hope he doesn't make any errors.

Big questions over whether TAA will make the squad. Some "pundits" have him as a starting right back but Walker and Trippier will be in the squad and I reckon Southgate may take James which means TAA will miss out again. Rightly so? Well James had a cracking game yesterday and showed he can play CB in a 3 man backline (like Walker) if needed. I've never known such luxuries at right back as we have currently. KWP and Wan Bissaka must be kicking themselves!

Injuries may play a part in squad selection too - but apparently Jordan Henderson is fit, just not match fit, hence why I think he'll be in Southgate's squad at the very least.

Prowse starting??? Lol, I’ll have a pint or two of what they’re on.

If you're commenting in response to my team....then I agree, he won't start. But I think he should for many reasons.

As for the pint or two....try Porter1872......I doubt you can handle more than 3...maybe even 2😂😂

There's no way JWP is going to start a game in the Euro's. Although it appears Southgate has a soft spot for our James, I don't see him starting a game. Henderson is bound to start if fit.

This, but imagine JWP and Grealish in the same time - Grealish getting fouled around the box and JWP banging in the resultant free kick. It's a recipe for GOALS! 🙂

Mount and Rice have two of the spots for midfield, if Southgate persists with a 433 then I suspect Henderson or Phillips will be his choice for the third spot.

Is it weird that I have little interest in how England get on? I'll be watching the matches but can't really rustle up any enthusiasm for the national team at all. It's been that way for years as well. Went to the pub for England v Sweden in the World Cup and everyone was going mental when England scored but I barely even clapped.

I'll mainly be wanting the Saints players to do well whatever team they are playing for.

Rice and Phillips is probably too defensive, given neither can really offer much going forward. In a 433 the midfield will be Rice, Mount and one of JWP or Bellingham imo. This is why I think JWP has a pretty good chance, only he and Bellingham can play that role with Hendo very likely out

JWP might play in the third group game if we win the first two and are already through, but agree he's unlikely to feature much.

Suspect it'll be Rice and Henderson (if he proves his fitness in the warm-up games). If we move to a 4-3-3 then those two alongside Mount or Foden.

I think this is a very good point.

That was said from a purely selfish saints point of view! He's played every minute of every single game for 2 entire years, this recharge will do him the world of good. I hope most of our players get the chance to recharge to be honest.

From an England point of view, having Kalvin Phillips over JWP is an absolute load of nonsense.

On a semi-related note, Crocker / Ralph / Alek Gross really have to get our pre-season fitness spot on this summer.

Fucking shit manager Southgate.  Did ok at last WC but mostly easy games. He just doesn’t have the flare and Henderson is so his sort of player. JWP wouldn’t be in my England team but feel sorry for him. Such a great crop of players. If only we got someone like Poch to take the job we’d be winning everything.

Phillips is such an average player, shouldn’t be near the squad let alone starting for England. Massive shame for Prowsey if he doesn’t go, but agree from a selfish point of view It gives him an opportunity to recharge. Hopefully it doesn’t make him feel he needs to move to be an England regular.

Good that he gets a rest, bad because it's a poor decision based on his club's position rather than his ability.

He gives the squad far more options than Phillips as a sub because if you are chasing a game and need someone with top level dead ball delivery then Ward Prowse has what you need. He's also proven he can play in a few positions so if there was a random injury crisis he could do a job.

I'm the same now days mate, just can't get into it. Think as a kid i used to want England to lose as punishment for overlooking Le Tissier. Looking forward to watching the games and might favour a dark horse side but can't stand most of the England team, if there's no Saints players in the side even more reason to not be bothered.

Scrap that. Ward-Prowse set to miss out, apparently. Victim of our second half of the season form...

Remember he left the England camp early in the last international break, thought that was a bit odd, must have had  a row and told Southgate he's a shit manager i reckon.
