Saints 0-2 Leeds - Match Thread

Recommended Posts

Going for my hat-trick of starting match threads which culminate in 3-1 wins. Although, to be honest, I will be amazed if that is the result of this one. A much sterner test than Palace or Fulham gave us, but still possible for us to get something from this game.

Hoping to see Forster back between the sticks, but expect Macca to start again with Fraser getting the nod away at West Ham.

Would like to keep the defence the same as it was yesterday. Also want to see JWP and Armstrong continue their CM partnership, as well as the Adams-Ings front 2. So I guess the only changes we might see are the number 10s, but not sure we will even see that. Personally, I would opt for Moussa and Theo, as I think they give us more defensively than the other options.

Whatever the line-up, I hope they give all those lucky home fans in attendance plenty to cheer about.

Tough game. Leeds away a few months ago was up there with our worst performances this season so hopefully we show up this time.

Our defence will have to be a lot tighter than it was yesterday, luckily Fulham didn't have any good finishers in their side.

A chance to end the season on a high in front of 8,000 home fans and get up to 46 points to equal our Puel season.

This will be a much tougher game than the last two. Trying not to get too carried away because Palace and Fulham are new levels of shit. Leeds are actually a decent outfit and will provide a test.

I reckon we'll get a draw here and I'll take that.

I've just done the health questionnaire and printed off my ticket, hurrah. Must remind myself to take my long distance glasses as I'm up in the gods somewhere. Still a decision as to whether I go by train and have a few pints, especially as pubs will be opening up a bit. I'll still aim for one with a garden though and will be taking my hand gel. I wonder how vocal we'll all be: are we allowed to sing?!

Agree it'll be tougher but i would like revenge for that result earlier and they are the sort of side we should be aiming to beat.

Hard game. I'd keep basically the same side that has been playing well for the last two. It's Maccas turn to play (IIRC they get two games each) so I'd have

Macca

Stephens Vestergaard Salisu

KWP JWP Armstrong Redmond

Tella Ings Adams

Obviously can flexibly turn into a 4222 with Salisu at LB, and Tella dropping back to attacking mid next to Redmond.

Don't disagree, we did kind of show up in the first half of the game up there...but we were then just picked off in the 2nd half. Raphinia is the game changer if he's on form IMO, Harrison is equally very important to them.

Over the course of the last month, since we've had players come back, our performances and now results have slowly improved though. These next two games will be a show of our progress for sure though.

I actually think with all players fit our first 11 is of a similar quality to theirs with us maybe edging it. They have some big pluses in Raphinha, Meslier, Phillips, Dallas but I think players like Ings, JWP, Vestergaard, KWP, Armstrong would walk into their side. I also think Bamford is quite overrated, the way leeds play gets him an absolute tonne of chances but he is a very poor finisher, statistically pretty similar to Adams. Also last season in the championship was one of the worst finishers the championship has ever seen statistically in terms of underperforming xG.

Leeds are streets ahead of us in terms of quality.

True. They're ten more goals for and ten fewer goals against. And they are extremely well organised in every department, unlike us.

But we are playing better again and if Ings is in top form I think we can scrape am entertaining  3-3 draw.  Expect Tella to score.

None of us would have said that at the start of the season though

It's because its a reasonably short-termist view. We were better than them for over half of the season until we nosedived after injury. With full team fit and firing we are better than Leeds. They are very overrated.

Be handy to test this theory on Tuesday but I doubt Romeu will be back, and Bertrand is obviously out.

Wishful thinking that we might win 3 in a row.  Can only hope that some of ours want to prove a point after the shit show at Elland Road. Still don't think we are at their level yet though.

We don't need to win three in a row. We only need to win one in a row now.

Agree with this. Leeds are very overrated. Biesla is very much a media favourite

songs? Who the fook are Leeds United x3 as the Saints go marching on on on!

Sha la la la la la la la.....

Who the fook are laughing now😇

Are you for real? Behave like that and another lockdown is almost guaranteed.

For starters singing is not allowed and you will be required to wear a mask. Try to act responsibly and who knows the number of new cases of Covid will not rise dramatically and you will get another chance to watch Saints in action soon

Saints fans did a good job at West Ham in 1994 as I recall.

I remember that game.  West Ham fans charged towards us in the Bobby Moore stand but then stopped and started clapping.

I was very relieved.  I thought I was going to get my head kicked in.

Yes. I plan to take a big pointy stick to make sure nobody gets near me and will be reporting anyone who even dares to even utter a word about Stuart Armstrong's hair being in good condition over their mask to the nearest steward.

Will they do an end of season walk around the stadium for the final home game?

I imagine 95% of the crowd will be applauding them on etc etc but for me this season has petered into a "what could have been". I mean I'm not angry/mad, but disappointed.

Yep, that's the game. A car load of us went up without tickets and got in a side stand, all separated.  We got sussed with a few amusing stories to tell. The supporter next to me, up from Brighton must have noticed my attempts not to react.."Good player that Le Tissier"..

My first away game and also the final game for the Chicken Run stand. The ball went out for a throw in and someone chucked a plucked chicken back. After Tiss scored the West Ham fans invaded the pitch and tried to goad some of us onto the pitch. The away fans were very restrained considering the provocation - it was handbags and at a safe distance and no-one took the bait which is a credit to our fans.

Why the fuck are you even talking about the game? You can’t even comprehend what being a supporter is.

I was there too. No one took the bait as West Ham would have done us more like.

Complete IIRC with the charming chant

’Oh when the Saints, Get kicked to fuck, oh when the Saints get to kicked to fuck. We’re gonna be around that corner, when the Saints get kicked to fuck’.

the guy behind me called them a bunch of animals. I don't remember any of our fans crossing the barriers - even the ones with more teeth than brain cells. It was my first away game, I was a bit green and I'm not exactly 'hard' but never felt they would follow through. It all looked quite childish really. I've been to more threatening parents evenings.

Must admit I chuckled at that. You're right though, it didn't feel threatening. In our stand somebody was being all dramatic and mouth-frothing pointing out that my friend was a Southampton supporter and to give everybody else their due they just looked embarrassed at their fellow supporter!

Not quite how it was. Word got to the ICF that the DEF had been wrapped up by the old bill at Bethnal Green an hour or so before kick off after we'd smashed them earlier that day. Ironed out the irons on their own back yard. Had them on their toes but once our main mob was out of the way for their own protection so fancied their chances against what was the handful of lads who managed to slip the escort. Bumped into a few of them at London Bridge later that evening, they weren't so mouthy then. You wont see that in any of their books.

Isn't there somewhere else on this forum for discussions such as this ?   Happy for people to state their views, but this is the pre-match thread for a game tomorrow night.

In team news, Romeu may be back on the bench and Bednarek has recovered from his heel injury so is also available.

Hope to see Stephens and Salisu continue, they've done well recently. Bednarek would probably benefit from a bit more time on the sidelines, particularly now the Poland team has been announced and he's included.

Considering a lot of our fans believe staying in the premier league is all that matters are we going to have an open top bus parade at the end of the season to celebrate what in the eyes of many is another season of incredible success?

Sorry to interrupt with an on-topic post, but I'd like to see:

McCarthy

KWP Salisu Vestergaard Stephens

JWP Armstrong

Tella Djenepo

Adams Ings

Can easily change into a 343 or 523 with Djenepo at LB

Romeu, Walcott, Diallo, Obafemi, Forster, Bednarek, Redmond

Leeds midfield have impressed me last few games, they seem to cover unbelievable amount of ground , I wouldn't be surprised to see Diallo in for this especially as three games in a week might be asking too much for Armstrong.

I saw Alioski has been reported for making a gesture but assume no punishment, Leeds unlikely to drop lower than 10th so could make a few changes themselves. Fans seem confident

Maybe Armstrong was taken off early against Fulham so he can start again tomorrow. I know Hasenhuttl has mentioned before that he struggles to play 3 games in a week but he's so important to us that I really hope he starts.

No doubt they are confident. Beat us easily last time and are coming off the back of a good win.

We should be in for an exciting game.
