VAR decision of the season

At this time of the season it is customary to choose the player of the season / goal of the season / young player of the season etc etc. How about looking at the VAR decisions that have both gone in our favour and have gone against us? Which have been the worst decisions / most memorable decisions?

For me:

Decisions in our favour:

Nominations:

- The handball against Spurs at home.

- Our penalty against Brighton.

- Ings goal v Wolves in the cup. 

My winner in this category is the penalty that we were awarded against Brighton. We certainly were fortunate in this instance.

 

Decisions against us:

Nominations (there are many to choose from)

- Matt Cash's handball v Villa.

- Ings's goal v Villa

- Adams goal v Man U

- Bertrand's handball v Wolves

My winner is the Bertrand handball. Not only was it totally unfair but it also changed the whole complexion of the game. 

There must have been others which I have missed but these are the most memorable for me.

Good call. I'd go for Ings goal against Wolves and the Cash handball as that was just ridiculous.

The Bednarek sending off against Man U for me. 

When viewed from the angle behind the goal it was obviously not a foul let alone a sending off. When VAR called the ref over I assumed it would obviously be overturned, then amazingly the ref just stood there and stared for at a freeze frame from the wrong angle for a minute and gave the wrong decision.

I’d add the Dendonker handball not given in the same game as R.B’s one was given. Ludicrous and infuriating in equal measure.

Cash handball for me all day. I mean, it was blatant, even the Villa fans were saying so. Also If we get that and score the penalty i think we win that game as we were the beater team and it would also stop us having that awful run.

I still feel like punching myself in the face thinking about that decision. It was at that point that I realised I dont understand the rules of football anymore.

All of the ones that went against us mentioned above were so bad and make it very hard to choose the worst, but if I have to choose 1 it has to be Vestergard's sending off v Leicester, it was so ridiculous I still can't believe it was given.

That decision had the biggest impact on our season and a large contribution to the terrible run which started at that time.

Red card and penalty and it's extremely likely we win that game. Also KWP might not have got injured which hugely unsettled the team.

There have been way too many glaring errors to pick a winner.

Probably the worst season I can remember for really obvious mistakes, truly dreadful refereeing and VAR through the middle of the season, beyond laughable. 

But as some keep reminding us, these errors even themselves out....🤣

So I'm looking forward to us benefiting from a dozen dodgy penalties/offsides/handballs/red cards in consecutive games sometime soon - and of course the extra ten points that would change our season.

That’s mine too was an absolute joke of a decision I still can’t believe it. 
Bertrands handball was a shocker too but Cash should have been off and 1 up

I agree, unbelievable that two "expert" referees have found a way to make that acceptable.

Think Villa at home should get an award for the game most influenced by incorrect VAR decisions. Not only the penalty not given, Romeu's goal disallowed for a foul on a keeper he never touched and the late equaliser given offside

My top 3 bad one's.....

Cash handball easily the worst decision. And the way they doubled down cemented that.

Vesti's red card v's Leicester. Utter bullshit, plain to see, and he didn't even go to the monitor. 

Berty's handball a close third. Made worse by the fact Wolves had a bigger handball that they let fly.

And the let offs......

Ghost penalty against Brighton. Clearly outside the box. I celebrated that, and felt dirty in doing so. 

And although we've had a few more, half a season of var beating me down has made them slip away into obscurity. 

So that's all I've got. VAR is shit, 80% of the officials are incompetent, and Mike Dean is a prick. #bekind

Ings offside in the same game was another, but the Cash Peter Schmeichel save edges it for me.

Is handball denying a goal not a red card anymore? I thought that was different to a handball which is stopping a cross?

The Villa game was an aberration for VAR.

The handball, clear and obvious even in real time, which was missed.

Ings offside which wasn't offside and the lines weren't even drawn correctly. 

Shambles that game.

The brighton penalty was our most generous the other way.

I remember he kept drawing and removing the lines until it was so that Ings shirt cloth was offside.

Who was on VAR that day... Mason wasn't it?... IIRC

I thought that it is no longer a red if a penalty is awarded? Deny a goal scoring opportunity outside the box and it's red. Inside the box is penalty and maybe a yellow.

Mike Dean was VAR I believe. Mason was ref.

The double acted reunited a week later in that 9-0 abomination, with Dean as Ref and Mason and VAR and we had the Jan red card etc. A very costly couple of weeks which probably cost us our top half finish.

Vestegarde's red was appalling, the Villa handball mind boggling, Bertrand's handball when he was trying to get his arm out of the way and was not even looking just bemusing, Bednarek's red against Man U, which cost us three goals absurd but probably the worst one was in our favour against City when McCarthy fouled Foden.

I think others we have forgotten in our favour is

- Foden not getting a penalty in the away game at Man City

- WBA scored a perfectly good goal against us at the Hawthorns too

 

The Ing's goal against Wolves in the cup whilst in our favour - the correct decision was made nothing and it certainly wasnt as controversial/tight as some of the other calls?

Also I can't remember if Villa away, we had a goal ruled out too? 

Also the Leeds game away, I still think we should have had that goal given at the end of the first half from our free kick - or it was very inept refereeing can't remember but still a big moment in the game. In that same game though Tella's penalty being chalked off was correct decision I think

The Adams disallowed goal against Man U royally pissed me off. I just knew a 9-0 was on the cards and when it got ruled out the inevitable continued to unfold. Fucking outrageous decision.

The most puzzling was the Adams goal at ManU. They didn't even bother drawing the lines. The Ings goal against Villa was shocking and I can feel myself getting riled up even thinking about the handball. Next time pick the ball up and walk off with it until the officials can come to a sensible decision.

I still lose my shit thinking about the Cash handball. They found an obscure part of the rules not to give it...which turned out to be wrong anyway! Never seen a penalty turned down for that reason before, and seen penalties given since that have brushed the thigh or whatever. 

Though overall VAR howler of the season would be that West Ham red card.

That Villa game really took the biscuit. I was so full of anger and frustration from the 3 decisions (Cash handball, Romeu foul on goalie, Ings offside) that I headed straight out and rage-skied (x-country skiing) to my fastest ski of the year.

Then there's the Wolves game. Ball blasted at Bertrand from close range and he turned away and it hit his arm as it was by his side, no advantage whatsoever. A few minutes later a Wolves player moved arm towards the ball and hit it, from a ball that had been kicked from further away. 

Literally no consistency for handball incidents 10 minutes apart.
