No idea why he didn't go back through and delete a load of old messages as this is the sort of thing that people do for some reason.

The person I feel sorry for is Kent wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson who is having to spend an awful lot of time explaining he is actually a different Ollie Robinson who plays pro cricket. He's actually very good, much better than the guy who was flailing around behind the stumps in the first test. Would be amazing if England got rid of one Ollie Robinson and then picked the other one for the next game.

Two Ollie Robinsons, there's only two Ollie Robinsons

Why they didn’t pick Billings having put him in the squad - a longer standing wk and experience of batting for England in other formats with decent degree of success I do not know.

Mahmood for Broad and Billings for Bracey at Edgbaston please. Oh and Crawley out until he can differentiate outswing and inswing bowling. Talented kid but needs some basic coaching.

Crawley has been awful this season, and I say that as a Kent fan. No idea why they picked him.

Absolutely!

According to Michael Vaughn :

Because I'm sure Michael is spot on, only now will he realise, educate himself and become a better person for it, there's no way he could possibly have done that over the last 8 or 9 years when he was growing up and couldn't possibly have figured out that what he posted in 2012 was stupid without someone pointing it out to him 9 years later!  Thank heavens they've managed to catch it just in time!

Yep. Daft words from Vaughan, and a daft decision from the ECB.

Yes absolute cunts.  Hey an 18 yo made a sexist tweet. Yeah no one at the ECB is sexist in anyway. The tweets weren’t very racist either but in a black and white world a piss take about Muslim bombs 10 years ago is deemed enough to suspend. No one has the bollocks to defend the lad.

Just heard that and well done. That is the shit Labour don’t get. Starmer will probably call for a week of diversity training. Although little genuine about Johnson I feel this is a genuine opinion not a focus group finding.
Carberry is being a bit of a twat about it too.

I do hope the ECB panel members who are looking into historic social media are all squeaky clean with no history of ever leaving the house - because while posting racist shit is obviously fucking stupid at whatever age, we now seem to be trawling the archives for literally anything we can take offence at.

When they discover that WG Grace loved a brown envelope and was caught up in a dodgy expenses enquiry, that statue's coming down!

I imagine the ECB panel members who are looking into historic social media atrocities probably aren't up to date enough to have their own social media accounts.  Might need to have a look in their 'desk diaries' instead.

I agree. Never thought it would happen.

Mind you it is amazing that with covid measures, N Ireland falling apart, the potential covid 21st june lockdown, G7 meeting, Tory MP's rebellion on foreign aid etc etc on the agenda our PM still found time to offer an opinion on the disciplinary action meted out to a cricketer. Cummings was probably correct when he said that Johnson was  1000% obsessed by the media.

It's frightening - what was posted was wrong clearly but the player has admitted he has done a huge amount of growing up since 18 which his career history also demonstrates. People said Freddie Flintoff was unlucky with the pedalo incident in Barbados in 2007 as camera phones were becoming mainstream as far worse happened in the 1980s and 1990s - as the Sky Spinwash documentary of the India tour in 1992 shows. Now it's a different gravy last 10-12 years with social media as well. Craig Overton actually said something allegedly racist on the pitch during a county game in 2015 but only a fraction of the headlines, he apologised, underwent training apparently and may well play in Robinson's place at Edgbaston. He was lucky it was pre-2016 when the socio-political climate changed in so many ways.

These lads aren't straight A students in many cases, especially bowlers (batters tend to be from different backgrounds on the whole) and the cricket world is part of broadening their horizons by mixing with different people to their background, global travel to see different cultures and challenging for themselves the lazy and incorrect stereotypes they've grown up with in their peer groups where they come from. Isn't that another form of widening participation but through sport rather than further/higher education?

People complain that successful sportsmen and women don't connect with the public like the 1970s and 80s but it's not difficult to see why with the level of scrutiny/trawling back so far into the past.

Whilst I very broadly agree with Dowden and Boris, let's be clear they are stoking a culture war every bit as unpleasant as the obsessives trawling social media for their own purposes to play to the ignorant. The wellbeing of Ollie Robinson isn't at their forefront.

Agnew's piece on BBC Cricket yesterday was good - basically saying the ECB is in a more difficult place than the politicians because you have two live investigations - one on Rafiq at Yorks CC, a county that has had historical issues, and the other IIRC is John Holder the former umpire which involved the ECB itself.

EDIT - the latter case was settled the other day after mediation. Good to see Devon Malcolm and Dean Headley, two fine ex-cricketers and bright people added as match referees: John Holder & Ismail Dawood: Umpires withdraw ECB employment claim - BBC Sport

Indeed. I used to do a sketch of my cock and then post it 2nd class to the girlfriend marked ‘confidential’ so no risk anyone would intercept it and use it against me.

Another perspective from Mark Ramprakash who has been both an England player and coach - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/57398052

Useful to hear. Michael Carberry quoted again in the article. One of my favourite Hampshire players over the years but alarming to think that someone can’t mature or change with either education or experiencing different cultures through sport, and/or with age. I think it’s possible both to listen to experiences he had as a player of racism and directly address those for the better of future players from diverse backgrounds that we want to see more of in the game, but to also recognise people can genuinely change.

Ramprakash is talking shit about the ‘toxic’ dressing room if Archer and Ali had been In there.

Archer and Robinson are teammates at Sussex, he’ll know more than anyone that he’s not a racist.

The tweets are only borderline (stretching) racist at worst. I’m sure he could say all of that to Archer and Ali and neither would be in the slightest bit offended. The poor bloke is being hung out to dry. Pathetic.

Now somebody has dug up "offensive" historical tweets by Jimmy Anderson, Eoin Morgan, and Jos Buttler, and the ECB have said they will be taking "appropriate action". If these messages were posted on a public forum, why weren't they offensive at the time ? Apparently one of the tweets by JA was aimed at Stuart Broad and accused him of having a' lesbian haircut'.

What sad, pathetic non-entity, self appointed Thought Police and guardians of public morals , are spending their worthless lives trawling around social media accounts feeding their faux outrage and demanding the public humiliation of people in the media spotlight ? What sort of bland, soul less, thought suppressing, monochrome society are they expecting to create ?

And now students at Magdalen College Oxford have voted to remove a portrait of the Queen from their Common Room as it is a " symbol of colonialism".

Obviously none of them are studying history - the Empire was totally dismantled during her reign.

And to add that in Morgan and McCullam’s cases the tweets had been deleted a while ago so either someone has sat on them waiting or actually gone to the trouble of digging them back out. I agree it’s pathetic either way. I have a diverse group of friends and cannot think of anyone that would be offended by Anderson’s to Broad, two of the greatest cricketers ever. As you say, where was the outrage at the time?

Robinson’s were in poorer taste and the Ebola, Speed/McCann and Muslim ones were plain nasty but I don’t want to give another inch now with this further wave of political hysteria until this stops. Ban him for a Test, bowlers were never going to play in all 7 Tests anyway, education and community work with England’s under age squads so they understand the implications. The lad has apologised and I’ve no doubt he feels gutted. First Test should be very special so ruined it for himself, hard to think of a worse punishment than that.

Cricinfo has the right idea, worldwide amnesty now on all cricket social media and have a proper, adult set of discussions about the values in the sport. Put some meat behind spirit of cricket which we want to see played in a competitive and fair spirit. Not this hysteria and dragging up ancient deleted tweets. The far bigger issue beyond social media is ensuring cricket draws on more of its diverse talent to help run and advance the game. More outstanding coaches like Otis Gibson need encouraging and some corporate cultures may need updating to accelerate progress. BAME CEOs as well at more counties and a pipeline to compete for national level jobs. That will do more good to embed change than picking out a single tweet about a haircut from 11 years ago.

The ECB has set a precedent now, those guys are going to have to be suspended whilst an investigation is carried out - to not do so will be treating Robinson diffently / unfairly....

I think the whole statue debacle of last summer has taught us that it's not acceptable to claim they weren't offensive at the time.  Slavery wasn't (considered) offensive at the time yet we've spent the last year trying to destroy all links to it, especially in cities built on / by the slave trade like Bristol and Liverpool.

Whilst I agree entirely with your point that those tweets / comments were made during 'different times', sadly the whole cancel culture brigade don't accept that as a valid reason and everybody throughout all of history needs to be judged by today's morals and standards!

They should just all refuse to play. People need to call out these cunts and make a stand. Imagine if someone got hold of every text Carberry ever sent and then held up is this the sort of person we want representing our country criteria to it. Oh and make sure they start from age of 14 years old.

Around 150 Oxford University academics are refusing to teach at one of its colleges after it decided to keep the controversial statue of Cecil Rhodes.

For years campaigners have been calling for the statue at Oriel College to go, saying Rhodes stood for white supremacy and racism.

TBH I’d give them the same leniency I would for Robinson when he was a similar age. Most teenagers are all hormonal, moody, opinionated, idealistic helmets, even the ones who aren’t are relatively immature versions of their adult selves. When I left home/college it took a series of hard knocks to make me realise ‘oh, life’s like that is it.’ ’Woke’ is just a subculture which happens to be trendy right now. A bit like 1970’s punk I guess, as soon as it becomes too mainstream people will lose interest.

They are not teenagers. The photo is being taken down in the Middle Common Room of the college which is where post graduate students hang out. I  would imagine the students who have taken this decision are in their mid to late 20's.

I am just worried though that we now live in such a regimented, Newspeak state that if you don't particularly like the Royal  Family you deserve to vilified by the Education Secretary?

George Orwell. 1984

Seems like that's where we're heading, but with a handful of non-elected non-entities controlling the agenda, a deranged blend of operation Yewtree and the Spanish inquisition. Still it distracts from the important issues in the world right now, makes you wonder if the Govt is behind the hysteria after all, instead of being seen to react to every historical indiscretion discovered by these heros. I wonder how many white sportsmen and public figures are "waiting for the knock", furiously sanitizing their social media accounts, like flushing bags of coke down the toilet with the police about to kick the door in.

On a slight tangent, I do think VS have gone off on a very risky trajectory with their new rebranding. I thought the whole idea behind the angels was that they were an aspiration, how women wanted to see themselves. I’m not sure there’re an awful lot of women out there who dream of looking like Megan Rapinoe.
