You seem to have completely missed the point.

I asked if any (and if so how much) fossil fuel is used to CHARGE the battery not make them.

Unless you're claiming they never need to be charged?

Also, does the capacity reduce with age (I know the battery on my phone does), so whilst it may last 200k miles, does it need to be charged more often later on its life (and maybe use more fossil fuels that created the electricity to charge them)?

Expand

Ah fair enough, i read it as change. Still a flawed point though because 60% of UK electricity comes from renewables + nuclear and that figure is growing year on year by around 3%. That autocar link gives a battery decline rate of 73% of life left after 200k - which is way more than I thought it would be.

That said i do think hydrogen will be the long term solution, not battery

I was trying to think of a reason why the climate change targets are missed year in, year out.  I thought about going to the pub to ask some randoms what their thoughts were, but then I read this article :

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crmzvdn9e18o

  Quote

A senior official at COP29 climate change conference in Azerbaijan appears to have used his role to arrange a meeting to discuss potential fossil fuel deals, the BBC can report.

A secret recording shows the chief executive of Azerbaijan's COP29 team, Elnur Soltanov, discussing "investment opportunities" in the state oil and gas company with a man posing as a potential investor.

"We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed," he says.

I think it should, but I'm not sure it will anytime soon. Ceres Power are a company big on this, and their performance (and the news around them) is a decent barometer imo on this. The slide in their share price, probably reflects the direction of travel for the foreseeable. Cheap at the moment btw.

Schools could be closed up here tomorrow with heavy overnight snow forecast, earliest snow and lowest temperatures since 2018 and 1993. I thought closing schools was a southern thing and northerners just wear a coat in bad weather?

Obviously there will be debates as to whether this is climate-related or not, but the potential actual destruction of swathes of America's second city may help to focus attention.

Meanwhile 60m Yanks were freezing with snow and storms with the coldest temperature for a decade. This is just weather though, when it's hot that's climate change.

“Climate change has made the grasses and shrubs that are fuelling the Los Angeles fires more vulnerable to burning, scientists say.

Rapid swings between dry and wet conditions in the region in recent years have created a massive amount of tinder-dry vegetation that is ready to ignite.

Decades of drought in California were followed by extremely heavy rainfall for two years in 2022 and 2023, but that then flipped again to very dry conditions the in autumn and winter of 2024.

Scientists say in a new study, external that climate change has boosted what they call these "whiplash" conditions globally by 31-66% since the middle of the 20th Century.

The wildfires have spread across parts of the Los Angeles area, leading to at least five deaths, burning down hundreds of buildings, and prompting evacuation orders for more than 179,000 people.

"This whiplash sequence in California has increased fire risk twofold," said lead author Daniel Swain from UCLA.

"First, by greatly increasing the growth of flammable grass and brush in the months leading up to fire season, and then by drying it out to exceptionally high levels with the extreme dryness and warmth that followed."

The researchers say that with every degree of warming the atmosphere is able to evaporate, absorb and release 7% more water.

This "expanding atmospheric sponge" as the scientists term it, not only leads to flooding when things are wetter, but it pulls extra moisture out of the plants and soils when the drier conditions set in.”

Or not donated fire engines to Ukraine according to Donald.

Sadly climate seems to have played a big part - loads of rainfall the last couple of years growing the shrubbery, heat this year has dried them out, and the wind has come along to fan the flames.

Horrible tragedy, and very sad that it's being used for political opportunism.

Not sure if it was a parody or something but someone said that goats used to feed on the brush and no longer do as it isn't cost effective which made the situation much worse.

It has been claimed that almond cultivation in California uses as much water as the total domestic water consumption in the State. 70% of almonds are exported, and it shows a certain irony in this picture showing a man emptying cartons of almond milk onto an area where the fire was spreading near his house;

They certainly gave the goats a lot of publicity last year, not sure if it was just window dressing though.

After living in the hills outside Perth in Aus for years, we had to cut back our fire breaks every year. Looks like they don't do such a thing there and might be a good idea they do. They help prevent fire spread as quickly as we have seen in LA.

I am a little wary of all the reports that historical burning of fossil fuels has caused extremes of weather as such occurrences have happened in the past.

That said the weather in the UK, in my lifetime, has changed and is warming.

Biggest sign of it I noticed in 2018 on holiday in the Lakes when WC in Russia was on. Growing up and throughout 2000s and most of 2010s, midday was hottest part of the day hence the song about Mad Dogs & Englishmen. What happened and it’s stayed ever since is the hottest part of the day mid-summer is 5-8pm when it had previously cooled down to a lovely temperature.
