Defending free kicks with a player lying down behind the wall

What is this ridiculous new fad in defending in recent seasons?

I think I have only over seen a handful of goals (if not less) that have been deliberately scored by players shooting under a jumping wall. Surely, statistically speaking, it would be more beneficial to have an extra player in the wall...or pretty much anywhere else.

Don't understand it, in all my time watching football I can only remember a handful of goals scored under the wall. You'd be better off sticking someone on the post away from the goalkeeper.

Thats a silly idea tbf, cos it means the oppo can crowd the goal, due to the offside being moved back...

We concede more goals direct from free kicks that way than we do under the wall, so it's 6 and 2 3's...

I suppose what it does do is stop your players in the wall being hesitant about jumping as high as they can in case it goes underneath. With the low shot covered they can just look to get height as soon as the player takes the kick? So I don't think it is necessarily about covering the low shot it's about the wall only having the one job?

This only works against a player with form for putting them across the floor.

I haven't seen anyone do it since De Bruyne and that was fucking sublime when he did it.

I done it once in a Sunday league game, was aiming top right but scuffed it though but we can keep that quiet...

Why don't the defending team do more to distract the attacking team? It's so prosaic.

Have someone mincing around flamboyantly next to the wall, or flailing around like batshit hollering at the taker, or running up and down in front of the goal, doing burpees, or something. They could do a lot more. And it would be funny.

There was that free kick the Oldham team did the other week, all dancing around messing about to put the other team off, then charging forward. They were the attacking team (and it worked, they scored), but it's the same idea.

Something we don’t see any more is the “split wall” - two off each post rather than four off one post.

It allows the keeper to both stay in the middle and have a better sight of the ball. That’s better than cheating to one side and trying to see the strike through a forest of legs.

And it’s much more “football” than a frigging draft excluder.

Your contribution is just as good without the unnecessary expletive. You do seem to use that word rather a lot and it does you no credit.

Next they will be standing on each others shoulders forming a pyramid, it might take a while for the freekick to be taken as they'll have to wait until the last man gets to the top but should be effective against low and high shots. To counter the ball in the nuts they will all have to release their grip on the player next to them as the shot is taken which could lead to some issues but at least the ball has missed the goal. Unfortunately it has its down side as there could be a risk of 10 players getting injured at the same time.
