Dragon_man Posted 24 February, 2023 Share Posted 24 February, 2023 I was somewhat of a lone voice that thought the European super league was good idea. Let those uber rich clubs that are the playthings of sheiks, oligarchs, drug dealers and arms dealers all play amongst themselves and leave the rest of us to compete in the real world. The finances would all rebalance. Sure, Lyanco and the likes may not get £50k a week, but would that a bad thing ....?

They want their cake and eat it, as they still want the PL riches. My understanding is that they would play in both and want the PL reduced in size

Yes, can't have cake and eat it. PSG vs Real et al week in week out would get tiresome in the end, and I think it would all head to WWF and 'Drive to Survive' territory. But that would be their problem. Saints and the likes would retain a grassroots atmosphere and appeal more to core football fans.
Disco Stu
Our rivals seem to be operating in a different stratosphere to us eclipsing our record transfer already this window. We'll have to be very shrewd if we're going to build a competitive squad this summer but realistically, it will be very hard when we're working with one hand tied behind our back. Everton have just pocketed £50m from Villa from the Onana deal as well. These deals are inflating the market well beyond our means.
S-Clarke
I wouldn't pay much attention to those bizarre Forest and Brighton deals with Newcastle. Massively, massively inflated prices just to get Newcastle over the line with PSR. Definitely some crooked books there I think!

david in sweden
....way back at the start of this thread....the question was ...is the Premier League too rich for us ? IF... you meant the quality of players that the top six clubs buy , then maybe the answer would be the same from most of the other 14 clubs , who have a transfer budget about the same amount as the " big money " clubs pay for just one individual.. and a bit more, and likes of City and United .and Chelsea frequently buy two or more at that cost in every window. Despite the huge amounts that rich club owners spend, few of them see any real success from their big money buys, and - with rare exception - the record-breaking fees that Saints have paid out over several decades have not been worth the outlay. Rich clubs merely do the same sort of business -with an extra nought on the fee but gain little. Survival is a priority for "the other 14 clubs " and the level of their salary bills forbid any big spending .
Dr Who?
I see us on par with most of the clubs outside of the top 6. We should be on a much better footing than Bournemouth and Ipswich and maybe Fulham and Brentford. I think it is all down to the scouting, and a bit of luck as well as the manager. There will also be owners that will spend above what they should in all hope of staying in the premier league. With some shrewd purchases and a little bit of good management and the players stepping up, we might just about stay in the league, if not we have another season in the Championship. It’s not too shabby!
