VectisSaint Posted 18 April, 2021 Share Posted 18 April, 2021 Just a word for Wayne Talkes on this depressing evening. very sad to hear he has passed away. Never made many appearances for the 1st Team, but always followed him as we were at school together in Sandown (to be pedantic he was at the Fairway, I was at the Grammar, but sport overlapped a bit and remember him well). One of the few Islanders to make it in the first team (though he was not a Caulkhead) he was apprentice at the same time as my cousin, Brian Humber who never did make a first team start. RIP Wayne 1
spyinthesky Posted 19 April, 2021 Share Posted 19 April, 2021 I played with both Wayne and Brian in my youth along with Bob Wakerley who I think was also from the IOW. RIP Wayne and sympathies to to his family.
Gru Posted 19 April, 2021 Share Posted 19 April, 2021 I was at primary school with Wayne and Bob, and remember playing against Brian. In those less PC times Wayne was nicknamed 'Tinhead' by one of the teachers, a name which stuck throughout his school time and beyond. He was a cultured footballer and a lovely bloke. Like many of his generation a top-level professional career was cut short by injury. RIP Wayne.
Dimond Geezer Posted 19 April, 2021 Share Posted 19 April, 2021 Any idea if he lived in Bitterne Park? When we first moved to BP, about 20 years ago, the postman would often mistakenly deliver post to us addressed to Wayne Talkes. At the time I thought the name was familiar, but couldn't place it, on the few times we spoke he was always very pleasant and apologetic on the postie's behalf. It wasn't until a bit later, when flicking through one of those fabulous Hagiology books, that I put 2 and 2 together. I've since assumed "my" Wayne Talkes was the ex Saint. My condolences go to the family.
