Hello. If anyone shares in the view that  England should be boycotting the World Cup in Qatar next year, I’d be grateful if you could read and sign this petition, and share it with Southampton fans. If not, no worries - I of course appreciate people will have different views on this. Many thanks.

The problem IMO with this sort of thing is that there are so many issues in the world so why do people feel the need to bring politics into football?

The fish we eat is often caught using slave labour, the kits we buy are stitched by kids, we do multi billion pound business deals with countries violating human rights laws everyday, we let the Chinese do whatever they like to the people of Hong Kong with no consequence as we are trying to get down to carbon neutral by getting anything that is polluting made in another country (China) so we feel good for lowering carbon but can carry on consuming at the same levels...but woah..we should boycott the world cup..that will fix everything?

They probably said the same about apartheid, the abolition of slavery, women's rights to vote, the abolition of hanging, the continuing fight against racism, stop the Vietnam War and so on and so on. What's the point of it? It'll never change.

I expect people sat around during the Second World War saying just that. What's the point of fighting the Germans.....we'll never win.

The point is, sometimes (not always) these things snowball and change does happen. OK, so it may not stop the Qatar World Cup, but if enough people boycott it, including clubs, fans, media outlets, advertisers and even Nations then it loses its value as a tournament. So if this petition in some small way helps to raise the awareness of atrocities and corruption going on, then I'm for it.

It's a matter of personal choice of course, but I'm guessing you won't be signing the petition? I'm not sure if you are playing Devil's Advocate or just being contrary You're entitled to your views of course and this site is for reasoned debate (sometimes!) so I'm not arguing with you, just saying that in this instance I happen to think you're wrong, Devil's Advocate or not.

I’ve signed.  It so much for the political reasons but because it is such a stupid place and season to hold it. It goes against all footballing traditions and I cannot believe that corruption is not involved.

I have no evidence of any such thing of course in case any lawyers are reading this.

You are absolutely right, Change has to start with a single person.

Personally though, I don't think it that people should try to use sport or football as the medium for that change. If we do boycott countries for everything that is wrong then we will never play another international again and probably shouldn't be turning up on a Saturday either as a protest to cheap labour being used to make the kits.

Hi Pete. I understand what you’re saying - there are so many injustices in the world and the web of blame is intricate. However I’d actually argue that this specific issue is, relatively speaking, quite simple to solve. It just requires enough people to take a stand. And while I know there are so many causes we could champion, I’m not sure that’s reason to champion none. And this one - as football fans - is one that I’d say is ours to address.

6500 workers in Qatar have died building infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup.

It is scandalous and is legitimising a State that is virtually practicing slavery.

Any footballer that takes part has absolutely no conscience.

This is all true, but these are broader issues. The reason for this particular boycott is due to things relating to this particular event.

We all know this is “sportswashing” as already deployed by China , Russia , Saudi Arabia , Bahrain etc not only that but it is too hot to play sport outdoors and they have no football heritage.

Same boycott the world cup for having the front to interrupt out domestic season , world cups are for warm summer's evenings not cold December days when we should be shivering on the terraces.

I'm not the one outraged about a World Cup in Qatar. Or the US for that matter. But I doubt we will see these same petitions and protests in 4 years time.

By the way, there are 2.3 million migrant workers in Qatar. The 6500 figure is the total that have died over the last 10 years, for any reason, employed in any job.

There is a lot of anti-Qatari propaganda around, since they aren't exactly on friendly terms with the US-Israel-Saudi-UAE alliance from hell. They are no angels, but this campaign isn't happening for innocent, humanitarian reasons, and certainly not driven by people who care about that.

But isn't the issue that people are happy to sign a form, maybe go for a walk on a protest but not really ready to change anything in their own life that would make a difference?

Isn't it just a bit of virtue signalling really? Make people feel good that they signed a petition but will they still watch the world cup? Probably... if England do well they will be down the pub watching the games..

Will they boycott the TV companies that show the games? No..... they will still have a TV licence and watch corrie after its over.

Will they boycott any company doing business with Qatar? Probably not.

Did they really care? Probably not..a bit of faux outrage is all the rage these days... then carry on as normal. Why weren't they protesting before the decision, to make the decision to give it to them impossible? Why aren't they out in the streets protesting to ensure China don't get the 2030 world cup?

How could you protest before the decision? No one was expecting the corrupt old fucker to pull Qatar out the envelope, I don’t think many people even knew they were deciding on the 2022 hosts at the time either.

Lol..the countries that are bidding isn't a secret..Everyone knew Qatar were bidding for it..Each round a bid is disqualified so you even get to see who still is in the running as they count down to the final few.

They are currently looking at letting China bid for 2030..There you go 9 years notice for you to get out protesting!

Surely the boycotts and petitions should have happened years ago so as to avoid all those deaths - genuine boycott of the world cup = no point building all the stadiums!

I think it is inportant for people to make their point at least those in charge will be aware even if they ignore it . How much better it would have been if Blair had taken notice of the marches against the 2nd Gulf war , for him and all those people who died in that war and the fact that it made us a bigger target .

Slave type conditions in the middle east are normal , people cannot escape as their bosses have their passports and local laws allow their exploitation .

Zero contracts , constant monitoring of individuals via computers governing their comfort breaks etc etc , which are now being put forward for home working , are not much better .

Posted (edited)

Perhaps the footballers could make a gesture before each game to show these slaves that their lives matter. Perhaps the broadcasters could bang on about it after every kick off,  and Wokies like Linekar could tweet about it constantly. That’s the only way we’re going to change the world, by making empty meaningless gesture that show we care and make us feel good about ourselves.

On top of the human rights atrocities, the blatant corruption involved which has forced re-scheduling and a tournament to be played in unsuitable (potentially dangerous) conditions needs to be addressed.

We don't feel good about ourselves by making our voices heard but the point should be made rather than just shrugging the shoulders and saying there is nothing we can do . FIFA and Olympic commitee corruption is at the heart of these decisions which is an ongoing disgrace but Bread and Circus's keep the Hoi Poloi entertained and 'Happy' so thats's alright then .

Not sure what that has got to do with their suitability to host a World Cup. Their human rights record is just one of the reasons why they shouldn’t have been awarded it, in my opinion.

i get why sometimes countries like Russia and China get to host these things despite their obvious faults, but the Qatar decision was just illogical and corrupt.

What is the brand of device you used to compose and submit that post on? Does it contain mined components from deepest darkest Africa (by child slaves), before being made made in a sweat shop?  Was it made in China, where millions of Muslims are placed in detention camps?

Or is signing a petition (that takes almost zero effort) going to fix this?  Have you changed YOUR facebook/social media profile to display how wrong all this is? And you say the government is virtue signalling!!!

No surprise you've jumped to conclusions based on fuck all, where have I said I've signed any petition.

My point simply is, it's easy to stick it on wokies, when our government continually sign up for stuff and then just carry on as normal. Of course the government are virtue signalling, they are the worse type.

I totally agree there are alarming problems with supply chains and it's depressing that it's virtually impossible to buy an electronic product that hasn't had a Chinese input.
