Will it be lucky FA Cup semi final number 13 for Saints?

1 - 1898 - lost
2 - 1900 - runners up
3 - 1902 - runners up
4 - 1908 - lost
5 - 1925 - lost
6 - 1927 - lost
7 - 1963 - lost
8 - 1976 - won FA Cup
9 - 1984 - lost
10 - 1986 - lost
11 - 2003 - runners up
12 - 2018 - lost
13 - 2021 - ???

Normally the bridesmaid, can we be the bride again? 🤔 😇

Noticed that three of our possible opponents (Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd) all play in European matches the week before the SF date (17th April). Sod's Law then that we end up facing Everton or Leicester.

Looking at the fixtures ahead of the SF and slightly concerned that those running the game will insist we play the rearranged fixture v Palace in the week ahead of the semi, and we're already due to play WBA on the Monday night. So, would they insist on a Thursday v Palace if our SF is on a Sunday ? As it's only Saints they probably will. The following week is another wasteland of Internationals.

No internationals, following week is league cup final, we're due to play Man City but already rearranged and taken our beating in that . We should rearrange any game for after semi not before.

We've also been in 3 League Cup semi-finals. Surely, as we go into our 16th major semi-final, we are due to capitalise on another one at long last. I wonder if there is any other team that has been in so many semi-finals and only won 1 cup?

yes, you're correct, my mistake about the internationals.

Assuming Chelsea beat Sheffield United we will be the team they all want to draw in the semi final, which might suit us as pressure totally off. Let’s hope we can pick our form up between now and then put up more opposition than we did in 2018.

Chelsea and City are the two I really don't want to get, i'd fancy our chances against any of the others including a United with no Mourinho or Ibra.

Wouldn’t mind Chelsea. I think they have the sort of style that suits us.

Obviously, anyone other than Sheff Utd and we go in underdogs, but on our day (pre 2021) we can beat anyone.

Champions league and Eruopa league may play into our favour, so who knows.

Get a win against Burnley and or west brom And have a few weeks to full prepare and concentrate for whoever we get.

Yeah, going on recent results between the teams you'd have to say we've a great chance against Man U.

Redemption at Wembley. Jankewitz to score a late winner to help us lift the cup..? 👀

Snigger all you want but we've come out and admitted we prioritised the FA cup from the start this season and it shows in our performances. I would fancy our chances with them much more than I would Chelsea or City.

To whomever reacted to my post, perhaps you would instead like to explain why you think we would have a better chance against City or Chelsea than against United?

Could do with City losing the Leauge cup final.

if they’re on for all 4 come the FA cup final, no one beats them. I don’t think anyone will anyway tbh, way to far ahead of everyone this season.

I don't see how them winning or losing the League Cup makes any tangible difference to their motivation for the FA Cup.

They’ve won the treble before. Have they, or anyone, won all 4 before?

but in reality, it doesn’t really matter. With 5 subs, we don’t beat them regardless imo.

Why does it matter? They'll be trying their best to win the FA Cup regardless of the League Cup result.

So you wouldn’t be more motivated to create history? It may only be 1%, but a chance to create history will certainly be a more motivating factor.

Let’s be honest, we’ll lose to city. We have to hope for one of the other 3 (lesser of evils) and hope in the other semi that City get complacent and lose. Then who knows in a one off final against one of Chelsea/Utd/Leicester

I doubt they'd care. The motivation would come from the medal they get on the day.

Written off Sheffield United then? 😁

I’m not saying that, am I. They could play at 50% and beat us I expect.

If you don’t think they’d care, you’re stupid. It’s widely reported that Leicester at half time said ‘we can get the record here’ and McTominay was screaming ‘we want 10’ in both our 9-0 defeats.

I know ‘let’s make history’ probably isn’t an option on for team talk on FM, but it would certainly offer some extra motivation for a real life person.

They beat us regardless anyway as they’re ruthless.

Rio Ferdinand has just said the complete opposite. He reckons the closer  they get to winning all 4 the harder it’ll become. The pressure to create history builds and builds. It’s probably why it’s never been done.

If we have to play City to win the tournament, I’d rather play them in the semi-final than in the final as they’ll have fixtures either side/a congested schedule.

Mind you, their squad is just that good they’re hardly feeling it.

Otherwise, as echoed above we are the team that everyone will want to draw. If we have every attacking player back in time for the fixture I’ll be feeling a lot more confident to go ahead and win in a one-off tie.

West Ham have only been in 7 FA Cup semi-finals and they've won the cup 3 times. Manchester City have been in 14 and won the cup 6 times.

We know on our day though we can beat anyone, City look the most ominous, the other 3 are a huge level below and have plenty of their own off days.

Hopefully unless we further suck in the league and are pulled properly into a relegation dog fight, they are all going to be fighting for champs league spots and Chelsea/City/Utd will have European games as well, so we might be the fresher.

We are the huge underdogs here, especially with our terrible form, but you never know, maybe this result boosts confidence and we go on a bit of a run, the likes of Chelsea/Utd stutter, get tired, have their concentration elsewhere.

Talking of lucky numbers if you add

1+9+7+6=23

then take away the times we’ve won a semi final

-4 =19

add the times we’ve won the cup

19+1 = 20

Add the margin of victory when we won it

20+1 = 21

its our year......

Where does all this leave us with European qualification.

If the Semi includes 3 teams that qualify for Europe via the league or winning the champions league would we qualify in any way as runners up or as next in line from the semi ? Grasping at straws I know and not even sure the fa cup has a European place against it anymore.

Heard yesterday, the last time England lost to Scotland, Wales and Ireland in same five nations/six nations rugby tournament was 1976....

Let’s hope for repeat of 1976 in Fa Cup as well.

Old news! Fairly sure the FA Cup Winner gets Europa League proper.

It's basically a budget European competition, no TV coverage and facing the dearth of European quality and very little financial reward. You get all the lesser benefits such as travel to Timbuctoo and congested fixture list. The reward is games against minnows and the chance of playing in the Europa League next year.

Nice idea but I'm pretty sure that it's now only the FA Cup winners that are guaranteed the Europa League spot.  If they already qualify then I don't think it is passed to the runners-up like it used to be - and it certainly wouldn't go to semi-finalists.

Would be nice to beat Sheffield Utd in the final so we can get revenge for 1902.

I don't hold grudges, honestly!

😇😇😇

Lots of opportunities for revenge

Sheffield United the 1902 final

Chelsea 2018 semi

the winners of the 9-0 derby

the only one we don’t have a grudge against in Man City. Although maybe the anti human rights Derby as Middle East takes on China makes a good headline

Under Hassenhuttl we have conceded at least 4 goals in one game v every team left in the competition

I'm sure they've already fixed it for us to get Man City anyway, they always get easiest draw.

Anyone but Manchester City.

IMHO Manchester Utd can beat them in the semi while I think Sheffield UTD gave Chelsea a good go today and that will suit us.

If Leicester win then that’s a tricky one as I hate Vardy and he’s too quick for our defence.

Equally, we’ve also beaten Chelsea and Leicester (away), and beaten City at home too.

United are currently losing, but we’ve proven we can compete with them (prior to that game anyway).

Depends how you like your glass, half-full or half-empty.

Quite like the idea of us being the underdogs in the draw.

I would prefer the calibre of teams to be a bit like the picture below!
