shurlock Posted 18 May, 2020 Share Posted 18 May, 2020 (edited) The daily death count seems to be dropping significantly. It has dropped sharply but we'll learn more tomorrow given weekends and mondays tend to be slow days. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 350-400 tomorrow but the downwards trend is clear. Lead indicators such as change in new infections will give some sense of the impact of relaxing lockdown rules, even after taking increased testing into account, so will be particularly worth monitoring. The Cat Posted 18 May, 2020 Share Posted 18 May, 2020 If the downward trend continues then in a couple of weeks the figures should start to dip below 100 on some days. We're obviously making progress in the right direction.
Weston Super Saint Posted 18 May, 2020 Share Posted 18 May, 2020 The caption states : In Italy, restaurants have also opened for the first time in 10 weeks with social distancing measures in place Ingenious! Put some plexiglass on the tables that isn't quite long enough to be effective but keep the tables where they've always been, that looks like it'll work! The tables behind have got plexiglass as well, so they'll likely be in use when it's busy. No idea what could go wrong

Restaurants are very high risk as anyone with the virus is likely to project aerosols onto other people’s food, just through normal breathing. This seems like a fairly good way to reduce that risk, much like a sneeze guard in any half decent canteen.

CB Fry Posted 19 May, 2020 Share Posted 19 May, 2020 The press conference was slightly more interesting today. Today's boffin Angela McClean (who always comes across well anyway) was in absolutely no mood to be seen as a government lackey. She pointedly said that the early testing decisions were driven by capacity, that the schools reopening should happen when there is adequate test-and-trace in place, not on some arbitrary deadline. She made it very clear that any balls-ups on the execution of the field testing was an operational not scientific issue. Lastly was full of praise for South Korea and the Germans, rather than the usual woolly "well, we can't really compare with others etc etc". There's been a bit of nitpicking of the scientists recently (yesterday's slip about February dates being a good example) and it felt today that the scientists are going to show a little more than just social distance between them and the ministers from now on. Saint WGC Posted 20 May, 2020 Share Posted 20 May, 2020 Chesney from Coronation Stret has gone up in the world, he's now doing the Coronavirus update lol. On a more serious note, with all the debate as to whether it's safe for schools to open on 1st June, am I the only person in the UK wondering why they don't just bring the school summer holidays forward to start from Tuesday onwards. This will buy the government and schools at least six more weeks to put into place plans to make it safer for schools to re-open. These are unique circumstances so why can some flexibility not be shown this year. The usual argument that teachers and parents/families go on holidays in late July and August surely is pretty irrelevant on this occasion as it seems that nobody will be going on holiday properly anywhere in the UK or certainly abroad for a few months. Surely this can only be a good thing for everyone as the kids will not miss out on more education as everyone keeps saying and teachers and parents will maybe have more reassurance with a better guarantee of safety. I must be missing something here as I don't have kids but I'm genuinely confused why this does not even appear to be in consideration.

Wes Tender Posted 21 May, 2020 Share Posted 21 May, 2020 There will be millionaire owners of companies up and down the country using the scheme, not sure what your point is? And all of them open themselves to criticism if they employed the same tactics as Coogan if they furloughed the likes of their gardeners and housekeepers. It is very interesting to note the support on here for Coogan over something that is arguably indefensible given his well known leftie political views. Apart from there being little reason for the gardener in particular not being able to carry on his work in presumably quite a large garden whilst self-isolating, most will wonder why he is using a government scheme designed to protest businesses, not wealthy private individuals. The next time this champagne socialist uses the platform he has gained as a media minor celebrity to spout his vitriol at the Conservative government, he should not be surprised if the interviewer ripostes with accusations of hypocrisy because of his readiness to avail himself of taxpayers' money to save him putting his hands in his pocket to pay his staff. He might like to reflect on the letter of support for Corbyn to which he was a signatory which stated "Labour's election manifesto under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership offers a transformative plan that prioritises the needs of people and the planet over private profit and the vested interests of a few". saint1977 Posted 21 May, 2020 Share Posted 21 May, 2020 Like shelling peas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I don't see any defending of Coogan whatsoever. I personally can't stand the bloke. I also saw criticism of politically neutral wealthy folks for using furlough e.g. Victoria Beckham which is fair enough. What I haven't seen in the Sun is an identical front page splash about Philip Green using it, which there should have been. Therefore, far more like propaganda than journalism if you care to look up the description. Client journalism if I'm being generous. CB Fry calling out Murdoch on Milly Dowler is entirely fair - no-one sensible is going to argue that the NOTW are not the same entity as the Sun/Sunday Sun, some hacks moved over. That was replusive criminal activity enacted on the public which the Sun claims to represent. I've also not seen yet one single critical, even broadly reflective article from either the Sun or the Telegraph of the government's handling of this crisis. Not even a hint of one. Smacks of North Korea state TV. Yet we are seeing other outlets banned from the briefings. I do hope Cummings is not taking direct advice from Bannon. Also, not every Remainer or Lib Dem, Tory centrist is a 'leftie'. Or indeed New Labour, you'd struggle to call them lefties. Would love to see you explain that to Ken Clarke's face and how you are so glad your 'heroes' drained the swamp. Whatever that means. HTH

whelk Posted 21 May, 2020 Author Share Posted 21 May, 2020 They need to be chalking up all these fckers taking advantage of the furlough scheme. Fact that everyone thinks these companies are a month away from collapse without being bailed out by the govt is laughable. Clearly some will be but where have all the profits gone so quickly? Said before should put people on a different tax code afterwards cos the likes of Ineos are going to be sure to doing their level best to not give anything back when they fully up and running. Close a few more libraries, freeze social workers pay..... will be the clamour from the gammon.
