Really could be. Really hope it is. Too early to say just yet, though, and the cost of assuming that and being wrong would be immense.

when you suggest it is too early to say, C19 deaths in SA are dropping like a stone (apparently).  More people have been killed at a BLM riot than by Omicron

Correction. More people have been killed at a largely peaceful BLM riot than of omicron

Or since Spanish Flu mutated to something less virulent.

Yes, about one century ago. It’s the way that all viruses mutate. If true that it’s milder then it is indeed good news and perhaps we should be encouraging the spread of it rather than imposing restrictions?

The massive drop in deaths reflects the previous wave of Delta receding.

Hospitalisations and deaths are lagging factors, and the massive spike in cases caused by Omicron won’t necessarily have shown up in those yet.

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/south-africa#what-is-the-daily-number-of-confirmed-cases

Also there are further confounding factors in the data from South Africa that mean it might not translate to a wave in the UK, for example, so far the vast majority of infections in South Africa are in younger age groups, and with Omicron being so heavily mutated, it’s possible there are other factors involved, for example a change in incubation period or progression of illness.

The anecdotal reports of it being milder ARE promising, but like I said, it’s too early to assume that’s the whole picture just yet.

France are already talking about jab 4 ffs.

Some people here are lined up for jab 4. My mum is. She has an underlying health issue so apparently needs it.

Here's the thing though, there's no "ffs" about it. She's told that she needs it for the good of her health so she'll roll up her sleeve, take 10 mins out of her life, and give herself a better chance of fending off covid if/when she gets it.

I'm accepting that covid is here to stay and I'll need boosters regularly. Not sure what the issue is.

It’s not having jabs that is any sort of problem. My third is lined up for Jan and I’m trying to get it quicker. Have will be a fact of life.

my FFS comment was because of a couple of news comments I read whereby some in France are talking about keeping restrictions in place until jab 4.

If the science supports that then that’s what it will be I suppose.

Until the next variant and they keep restrictions in place until the 5th jab

Are the restrictions actually restrictive though? Ours aren't in reality, pop a mask on inside, but otherwise go where you want and do what you want. For now anyway.

They aren’t really which makes boris rushed press conference pretty laughable. Fully expect more though give them panic and scaremongering modelling predicting millions of infections

do you really believe that many will get done? It was clear that the PM is throwing down the gauntlet to the system and the public to get as many done as possible.

Thats more urgent cancer and surgery sessions cancelled for known sick people so that we can try to reduce infections of a disease variant which so far appears to be mild.

All Boris has done tonight is a ten minute prime time time Party Political Broadcast in the week of a by-election and after a week of bad polling and terrible headlines.

Look at me being all Prime Minister like. Vote for me Shropshire.

I have my booster booked for 5th Jan, after tonight’s announcement from the fat slob I thought I’d see if I can bring it forward. Spent 25 minutes in a queue on nhs online only to be told there are no appointments available.

Quite clear that this is just another example of deflection. Set a target which sounds good but don’t put a plan in place to actually achieve it.

Fat cunt.

Fucking hell mate. If I presented data like that I’d be sacked. 3 bullet points and a graphic that I understand will suffice.

Had mine today- Pfizer. No side effects and well run. Two queues, those of us that had appointments and another for walk-ins.

Are they not being done by volunteers any more then? My second jab was in a branch of boots back in September, I doubt I inconvenienced anyone on an oncology ward.

I got mine on Thursday. The centre is a few mins walk from home so decided to just walk up and chance it. No problems at all getting the jab and all very efficient and quick. Arm seemed to hurt more than AZ jabs but nothing too bad and glad I’m doing what Boris said and protecting our way of life……

No.   The large majority of vaccinations are done in primary care. If they are doing jabs they arent doing consultations to diagnose cancers, heart disease etc - in those early days when early intervention makes difference.  This announcement doubles down and starts directly reducing secondary (hospital) non covid care.

GPs are to be paid up to £30 per vaccine as part of a ramping up of the booster jab roll-out in the UK, NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard has announced.

She added that she was aiming to free up capacity to allow hospitals, GPs and other services to administer more booster jabs.

“We will need to expand vaccination capacity right across the NHS,” she said.  She added: “Our hard-working GPs, community pharmacists and primary care colleagues have delivered the lion’s share of the vaccinations so far. We’re looking at how we can help them to do even more by cutting other burdens on them to free up clinicians’ time.”

Wait until tomorrow when you fall asleep ...

I had 2x AstraZeneca, then a 3rd which was Pfizer about a month ago - the next day I just couldn't stay awake, it was weird.

Similar except my third on Friday was Moderna - surely the Happy Shopper of the available vaccine brands. I spent most of Saturday on the sofa or in bed.

Only a 24 hour thing but feverish, achy and tired. Actually very similar experience to when I actually had Covid a couple of months ago.

My first two were AZ. I had a Moderna booster last Monday. Had hot sweats at night on Tuesday an Wednesday and felt a bit meh during both days but other than feeling that I had been kicked my a mule in my arm, no big deal. The worst reaction I had was with my first AZ jab when after 12 hours of the jab I was feverish and felt really crap for the next day. Spoke to a retired nurse yesterday who said that it is no bad thing to get a reaction to the vaccine as it shows the antibodies are kicking in.

Can report still going strong at mo. Hoping I can message my boss to say I will be sleeping this afternoon but can’t do it with clear conscience

Me and missus have had no reaction which doesn’t seem norm. Unsure if I had COVID early on but take it as a good sign of health that I can fight effortlessly whatever goes in my arm.

Yep, had the same last week, along with short lived man flu as per CB Fry described. Fine now.

Interesting interview that an epidemiologist gave to BBC Newcastle today (on the BBC News live thread) which offers a sensible view:

- Early data suggests this variant isn’t as bad but before other posters start quoting this there are key variables;

- SA population much younger

- Hasn’t been around very long, and not long enough for symptoms to be showing in any volume yet as severe enough for hospital admissions. So several weeks to go watching the data. With an older population and the associated complex needs/conditions coming with that, if millions get it in one go the NHS gets swamped on top of winter pressures.

So some early hope but also I can see the caution and need for reintroduction of some measures. Delta has hit the NHS very hard and frontline staff are already on their last legs.

Do you think if you dont have a reaction it's because you have not been jabbed with the lethal injection which is sending you to a slow death?

More likely the time delayed effect will kick in later. 'They' need to spread the mass extinction out to make it less obvious.

Seems like the older you are the less side effects you get.  I guess they figure old age will take care of you lot without any need for a push over the line.

I am of a certain age and have experienced no issues after x 3 Covid and x 1 Flu jab but seem to be receiving unsolicited calls on my mobile from some geezer called Bill who is checking where I am.

I've had nothing more than a sore arm with any of my 3.

Popped into town earlier about 4pm. Was so quiet considering it's so close to Xmas. Could even walk past the non-German market without getting squeezed involuntarily into Sports Direct by the crowds.

I'm guessing this is partly due to the  work from home mandate which is taking footfall from city centres again.

Walked through Marlands and noticed the Saints shop in there now. We truly are preparing for relegation if we're opening shops in Championship standard shopping centres.
