Good luck to him, about his level.  
 

I still find it amazing that some of our fans want him back every time a new manager is discussed.

I still find it amazing some of our fans were worried Liverpool were going to come in for him and compared him to Alex Ferguson. Good luck to him, top bloke.

Born and grew up close enough to The Valley to hear when a goal was scored and along with regular trips to The Dell (for my Dad to make sure I was always going to be a Saints supporter) I went to my first games there and lots since. Got a lot of time for the club, and of course for Nigel. I hope it works out really well for them both. Hopefully decent owners there at last too.

I have no idea why, but I quite like Charlton — they’ve had an absolutely horrendous run under their former owners. 

Always good to see Nigel back again.

My mate lived on Charlton Lane behind the ground, I went down there for the first game back at the Valley in the vain hope of getting a ticket of a tout, no chance. We were outside the ground when the players ran and and the noise was amazing, even better than the Camara goal against Norwich.

Good to see him back in work. Seems a decent job, hopefully he can make a success of it. Odd he's not been more in demand, did a decent job at hull given the situation at the time.

The romantic in me would still like him back at saints at some point, unfinished business and all. That ship has probably sailed though.

Good luck to him as a bloody nice bloke who always sees positive. Thought Championship clubs would take him as thats his level but Charlton a decent sized club for him.

Pleased for him. He did brilliantly for us and didn't deserve what we did to him. I hope he does well there, and I'll be looking at Charlton's results with interest.

Devils advocate, and of course you wouldn’t be able to say how anyone else would have done, but I don’t think he done brilliantly. 
 

We failed to win both leagues, the championship one we should have won from the position we were in and the core of that squad went on to play in the champions league. Hindsight I know, but I think anyone would have got that team through the league. 
 

But obviously a Saints legend and a all round decent bloke as well.

This has always been my view. 
nice bloke,but got very lucky with what he had at his disposal during his tenure. 
and ultimately came up short from what really should’ve been obtainable.

Bollocks to this it was the players anyone would have done well. Funny when it’s Ralph no one could do better. It’s as if manager position is largely irrelevant. Anyone could have got a tune out of Beckham, Scholes, Keane and Giggs eh

no one expected that Championship performance and Nigel was massive part of that.

no one expected that Championship performance and Nigel was massive part of that. 

I’ve never said that no one could do better than Ralph. In fact the opposite. I don’t think anyone could do any worse than 1 win in 12 games. 

But the fact Nigel has gone on to be a failure, or at best, very average everywhere else he’s been would suggest the squad he had played a very large part in our success.

Nigel Adkins was one of the best manager we've ever had and one of the nicest blokes in football. He transformed the atmosphere at our club before the Poch arrived.

Your demeaning put downs are unworthy of the debt we owe him and unworthy of you. 

All real fans will wish him well and be hoping that he can revitalise the once great club that is Charlton Athletic.

He's clearly a very good manager. The fact is, when he was sacked, harshly, we were on a good run of form. Whether we'd have progressed as quickly as we did under Poch/Koeman with Adkins we'll never know. They had connections I suppose he didn't have.

Yeah, good read. He's every right to feel bitter about the club for the way he was bombed out, whether right or wrong, it was clearly a snidey way to do it on our part. But he's a very dignified fella and never slagged anyone.

Some of our fans could take a leaf out of his book the way they turn on too many players for having the audacity to move elsewhere or just lose form.

Great read that, I will always be a massive fan of Nigel. He was the main reason there was so much positively around us for a good few years. Those L1/Champ years were easily my favourite years supporting this club, the most success I've ever seen as a supporter anyway. The whole energy in away games/traveling to away games, home games etc was just great. 

I know some fans argue that he didn't do well with us because we should have won the league, in either season, but that's a bit of a silly way to look at it in my opinion. He wasn't with us for the start of 2010/11, in which we had a terrible start to be fair, but we still pushed hard to finish top.

We didn't finish top of the Championship, but who on earth expected a top 2 from the start? 2nd place alone was an unreal effort given we'd just been promoted. We weren't far off either. I think it was the Reading game at home where Jason Roberts scored that prob put to bed our title hopes, but the ultimate aim was achieved.

Great years, great memories. I'd love to get a feeling like that around the club again.

We'd have been a far more stable club under him, and we'd have had far less concerns over loyalty. To me, he's the biggest legend of those times, along with Lambert. And if we do ever get relegated, i would have him back.

With the benefit of hindsight it’s very easy to say we should of won the Championship. A lot of that side went on to have really good careers at the top level and Reading turned out to be a pretty shitty side. However, I doubt anybody thought that at the start of the season, play offs were the top of my expectations and probably most other supporters too.  
 

Im not sure Nigel is that great a manager, but he was the right man at the right time for us. His positivity and the feel good factor enabled us to go thorough the championship with momentum built up from the previous year. He created the right atmosphere, played a system perfect for the good players we had, rarely picked the “wrong” side or tried to be too clever, and let the players do what they did best. In some ways he did a job similar to that of Ranerai at Leicester, created the right environment for the players to flourish. Not so sure he’d be able to replicate that again. Personally, he’s my 3rd favourite manager behind Lawrie & Ted, and he fully deserves the respect he gets from 99.99999% of our fan base.

Danny fox, big Jos, STEVE, butterfield, Aaron Martin, Frazer Richardson, Chaplow, Sharpe and David Connolly to name a few no doubt.

We had a young Lallana and Morgan (who lets be honest were new players at that level) and went on to develop into better and better players. We had Lambert who had never played at that level, Fonte who was a good solid player at that level, and a young cork who went on to have a decent enough prem career. The rest were league 1 / lower championship players.

(not aimed at you SOG) - but that is not a strong championship squad. I do not understand the expectation that Adkins should have won the championship. Its like saying city could keep aguero (lambert), foden (lallana), diaz (fonte) and fernandinho (morgan). Then replace the rest of their team with a bunch of Burnley, saints, and palace players and still expect they win the league. Just doesn't hold water for me.

He was a great manager for saints, agree that he was the right man at the right time. But we'd have been fine under him in the prem.
