Lighthouse Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 Proposition: If he keeps playing this way, we can save money on signing Walcott and spend it on replacing Ings/Bertrand instead. Discuss.
Saint_clark Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 See how Walcott does when he comes back (if) as our form nose dived once he got injured. It would have to be on massively reduced wages but I'd love for us to sign him. Would much rather see Tella take Redmond's space in the squad, who would still have clubs willing to pay £15-20million for him as for some bizarre reason he's still highly rated elsewhere. Then we get wages off the bill and cash to spend.

He was injured in the last 25 mins of our 3rd consecutive defeat and prior to the Liverpool game he played the full 90 in insipid displays against Fulham and West Ham. Our poor form began a good 6 games before he was injured and that’s not including the blank we drew against Man City.

Tella on the other hand looks dangerous and his pace is going to cause plenty of teams problems. He's going to score soon if he keeps getting starts. S-Clarke Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 His direct running gives us another dimension, he was pulling their (non-centre halves, let's be fair) all over the place. But I expect no less tbh given how poor they were. But he took his chance, unlucky not to get at least a goal IMO. He's certainly played himself into the squad reckoning this year.

supersonic Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 He was almost unplayable in the first half. Love his directness, just hope that doesn't get coached out of him the more he plays in the team. Really impressed with him so far, deserves a goal which will surely come. Contract negotiation must be pretty high up the priority list this summer

Teddeer Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 His problem in future games is that he will not face worse opposition than Sheff Utd plus we don't really like to go for the long ball over the top which is what he will thrive on. However, he did play very well today and made a massive contribution to the team.

tajjuk Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 Let's hope he kicks on and keeps performing, we have been here before with Sims, had some very good games and caused problems, then just faded away. Plus with the finances it would be great to fill a hole in the team without spending any money.

egg Posted 6 March, 2021 Share Posted 6 March, 2021 He impressed me today. Decent movement, great running, good feet. Not afraid get stuck in (has as many yellows as Vestergaard though, so maybe a bit too much). He's got something and he contributed massively to our win today. Saint Mikey Posted 7 March, 2021 Share Posted 7 March, 2021 He has top end pace, something we lack in the squad. He gives us a real outlet playing in the position he did today. Feel like his close control and ball retention needs to be better though and this is probably why he hasn’t had more opportunities to date. As the team is crying out for the pace he possesses. I think you've identified the areas he needs to improve. First touch, control and ball retention in tight areas. His pace, movement and work rate are excellent and he can strike a ball well with either foot. Tella is an immediate upgrade on Shane Long - maybe Long's aerial skills aside and he looks ahead of N'lundulu and Obafemi. I'm not quite ready to junk Redmond yet but Tella is clearly mounting a challenge for his spot as well.
Noodles34 Posted 7 March, 2021 Share Posted 7 March, 2021 I saw him play Queens Keep in the Hampshire Cup at Staplewood, about three or four years ago and he was head and shoulders above everyone else in the pitch. Teddeer Posted 7 March, 2021 Share Posted 7 March, 2021 People are rightly mentioning that Tella needs to work on ball retention at pace. This is one of the hardest skills to master and not many quick players have this ability. Vardy is very good at it which is what makes him so difficult to play against. If Tella can develop his close control at pace he will become a fantastic asset.

Rivers Posted 7 March, 2021 Share Posted 7 March, 2021 Looks to have the potential to be some player in the making. We've been here before though with others looking promising at first, but fading into obscurity as time passes. It's one thing to make an immediate impact, but quite another to keep that going and develop into a quality top level player. Has all the raw attributes to make it though, blinding pace, good movement off the ball, the courage and desire to actually drive forward with the ball and make things happen. It's when you've become established in the side though, that the fear of making mistakes and losing your place can creep in, and make you become more conservative if things aren't going well. Just needs to keep doing what he's doing and believing in his ability. If he can offer a level of consistency in his play that the other Nathan in his position seems unable to, the shirt is his to lose. If he can add some goals to his game too as he progresses, can become an important part of the side. Exciting to have another seemingly genuine attacking talent coming through our ranks after something of a dry spell from the Campus production line. Dusic Posted 7 March, 2021 Share Posted 7 March, 2021 I don't mean this in a negative way, he appears better without the ball than with it. We have lots of attackers who are nice on the ball but don't threaten the space so he is a good option with his pace and hopefully he doesn't lose that direct element. Whether he has the composure in front of goal or in the final pass will determine how good he is.

Mystic Force Posted 8 March, 2021 Share Posted 8 March, 2021 The difference I saw was that he provided positivity, and that he had the ability (mostly) to do what he wanted. It was nice to see a players whose instinct was to advance into space with the ball rather than a) pass it backwards or b) give it to the opposition. If I was Redmond I would be nervous, and you could see when Redmond came on he was more positive in outlook than I have seen in a while. Although that might have been because SU are not that good. derry Posted 8 March, 2021 Share Posted 8 March, 2021 Two ways to use his pace, put the ball in behind defenders, he knocks the ball 10-20 yds past the defender and uses his pace, Close control reduces his pace. He won't be any quicker than a nippy defender that is running without the ball. Not to worry though because from his play he gets how to exploit his pace. Walcott was also very quick but rarely uses his pace as he keeps the ball too close. He was better before he went to Arsenal.

BARCELONASAINT Posted 24 October, 2021 Share Posted 24 October, 2021 Is there anyone out there in the know that can explain the Nathan Tella situation??? Why is he not getting game time? He miles better than Theo and Elynousi, why does he appear to has been almost completely frozen out.....yes i know he's in the match day squad but he may as well not be. What the hell is going on?

What the hell is going on? its the million dollar question isnt it ? Last season he seemed to be Ralph's blue eyed boy, this season he's behind our own special not so fab four of Redmond, Ely, Djenepo and Walcott......oh wait, no, Ralph now sees him more as a central striker in competition with Armstrong (cant remember what game it was he stated this in the pre match press conference). Yet when he drops Armstrong he gives the spot to.......Redmond, with Tella still sat on the bench. Now whether there is an attitude problem with the player I've no idea. But its a very strange situation.
