Would certainly take Tomas Vaclik, very solid goalkeeper with plenty of european and international experience. Sell McCarthy and let Vaclik and Forster battle it out for number 1

If we're looking for a replacement for McCarthy as backup goalkeeper to Forster and eventual first choice, David Raya would be a better buy.

Parachute payments mean buying from newly relegated clubs isn't the bargain it used to be, almost as expensive as buying from another Premier League club. There is a reason a players like Buendia and Sarr weren't picked up by anyone last year. Buendia in particular would have been great at Saints.

I'd sign Conor Gallagher (on loan at WBA from Chelsea). Can play in front of the back four and in number 10 role if needed too. Decent at breaking up the play, is a really good presser of the ball, likes a pop from range and has a nice delivery on him which would give us an alternative to JWP in that area. Sounds like Chelsea want about £9m for him which for a 21 year-old with his versatility would be a great long-term deal and give us real competition in the middle of the park.

If Ralph really does want 2 players in every position, that would mean JWP/Gallagher in one CM slot and Diallo/Romeu in the other as I don't think Smallbone is ever really going to make the cut at this level, especially as he's now got to come back from a very serious injury.

The other plus with a player like Gallagher is the back up dead ball delivery which we have lost with the departure of Bertrand.

You have to go back a long time to before they existed. Parachute payments have been around for 15 years!

Let me be more precise... parachute payments combined with the massive tv contracts of the last 6+/- 2 years which result in relegated clubs not being as desperate to cut costs as they used to be mean their players are still very expensive, much more than they used to be.

Not convinced we'll be looking to spend any money on a keeper as we've other priorities. Although Vaclik will be available on a free and if the option is there we should look at it

I'm convinced we are, no team with a clear first choice rotates goalkeepers the way we have been doing, probably done to put them in the shop window and hope there in interest in at least one of them. They are also both out of contract in 2022.

Keeper may not be our highest priority, but it should be quite high, third or fourth after left back, an attacker and another full back.

It should be an area we target, but can’t see us doing it.

Good goalkeepers win you points - Niemi replacing Jones was probably worth 10-12 points a season for us.

How many players have we bought from teams relegated to the Championship in the past?

Since coming back, Redmond who had a year left on his contract and Austin who had 6 months when we signed him in January. Not really a market we go for.

Goalkeepers are still players. I was just curious as I couldn’t think of many players signed from relegated teams in the past.
