There's usually a deadline day surprise - Walcott, Minamino, Danso, Ings, Gabbiadini, Mane and Alderweireld. Hopefully another one this year, as I just like us being involved on the day.

This is an entirely sensible way to run a football club.

Odd comment. Surely it's fun for fans to get an unexpected signing on deadline day although that shouldn't be the motivation for the club to do a deal?

So, for all the talk and rumours, we didn't sign any of these:

  • Nat Phillips
  • Boubakar Kouyate
  • Flavius Daniliuc
  • Thomas Delaney
  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles
  • Rob Holding
  • James Tarkowski
  • Phil Jones
  • Issa Diop
  • Japhet Tanganga
  • Omar Colley
  • Philippe Sandler
  • Erik Palmer-Brown
  • Jason Denayer
  • Andreas Hanche
  • Brandon Williams
  • Gary Cahill

I notice Maitland-Niles is now linked with going to Everton on loan with an option-to-buy. With his ability to play in a number of positions including defensive midfield I always thought he would be one that we might consider, but obviously not!

Ward-Prowse’s reward for staying at Saints

Southampton and England midfielder James Ward-Prowse has become the club’s highest-paid player of all time, writes Dan Sheldon.

The 26-year-old, who was subject to a £25 million bid from Aston Villa this summer, put an end to speculation over his future by agreeing a new five-year deal at St Mary’s.

His new contract has seen him reach £100,000 a week, which takes him above Theo Walcott and goalkeeper Fraser Forster as the top earner at the club.

Ings was basically offered to be our highest paid player of all time and it was believed to be around £100k a week, and JWP has basically just signed that contract. Also likely both would have been on similar wages before and amongst our highest earners around £65k a week.

Ross Barkley would do a job.

But our business is done, only outgoings now. Kids on loans.

I certainly won’t be refreshing my newsfeed every thirty seconds tomorrow or watching the bullshit that is “deadline day” on SSN.

The rumours for Ings was 150k per week? Also, selling Ings means less than his then current wage has gone onto JWP's contract 🤷‍♂️

Sergio Romero still available on a free transfer. Mad to pass up the opportunity

Agreed, seems obvious.  However, he's not played much club football for 8 years and I'm guessing his salary would be big, are we confident he'd be worth it?

If he has been happy to sit in the reserves for 8 years I'm not sure he's a great fit for any club tbh

On the basis of his last 8 years, absolutely no reason to think he's better than what we've got. Would be a ridiculous move and totally against our transfer policy.

Over recent years we have been one of the more active teams on deadline day. I think this will be one that we sit out in terms of incomings...and aside from missing the drama I don't think that is a massive issue seeing as the position we would seemingly be interested in is 4th choice centre mid.

I wonder if we would bring in someone like Choudhory... A DM/CM who could cover Romeu.., But a plyer we could bring in on loan with a option to buy at the end of the year.

Do we think or hope for further activity today or are we all done for this window?..............would love to see Maitland Niles on a season loan with an option to buy but i think hes moving elsewhere.

75k is what we would have been paying him last season. There is no way he is on that now.

Why not?  If that is what we were paying him when on loan it's sensible to think he'd be on the same this year now he's under contract.

It's still a 50% reduction on what he was getting at Everton lol.

It follows the model of player we are currently bringing into our club too., I think it could be quite shrewd. Somebody i wouldn't be against us signing. If we did it though, We would have to agree a fee today that Leicester would accept if we did want to purchase him a year later. As i dont like the, Oh look he performed well for you, You owe us 85Million,

Swansea selling Jamal Lowe to Bournemouth. Wonder if that means Swansea will try for Obafemi again.

Is there any chance of Shane Long to Reading? I thought they were in a bit of a pickle financially, but they signed both Scott Dann (free) and Danny Drinkwater (loan) yesterday.

Reading have a 8.5k a week wages cap on new players so that's unlikely

That means Chelsea are still paying Drinkwater a fortune - what an utter disaster of a signing that was.

Very similar to the Rodwell signing, massive wages stuck on a long contract, but actually pretty shite. Difference is Chelsea can wear it.

Indeed.  Seems to have a bit of an attitude problem, sort of feels like once he'd won the league he lost all motivation to keep being good.

I think we were ruled out of that one yesterday.

I don't expect any permanent signings, I think we're done. Keeping our powder dry until the summer so we can actually buy a goalkeeper when we have a bit of wage free and no need to sell first.
