Exclusive Interview - Legendary developer Kevin Toms talks about Football Manager

I go back to the initial Championship Manager in the 90's, I didn't have a computer of my own so I either used my school's computer ( I was a boarder and they let me use it some evenings) or a friend's computer. I did, however, play this bad boy back in the day...

220px-Premier_Manager_cover.png

...and it is the only management game where I've had a player DIE on me! I was Wycombe boss and literally my best player died in a car accident. Now THAT's lifelike. Morbid, but lifelike. It was also when I was too naive to realise I could just restart the game and not have that particular player die.

Then I reckon you might have played for my dad (Southern League) and I probably watched you play a few times or even played with/against you (less likely because my fall from grace was probably even quicker than yours).

Does anyone remember the football manager game that used to be run by post? They advertised it in the back of magazines and you had to pick teams, tactics etc and post it off and then you'd get a reply with detailed match results and then send your next lot of tactics in.

Would have been around 1990.

Please someone say yes.

Couldn't afford the pitch so I made my own with green cloth and Snopake that my dad "borrowed" from work.

In some places the lines were so thick that the ball wouldn't cross, so it kept coming back at me. There have been times in the past two years when I've thought Saints were playing on my home made Subbuteo pitch.

Yes, I do, was part of a group of lads at school playing in it. Players were all round the country, had to phone other players to make transfers etc. The u30s on here probably think we were mad. Peaked around 1992/3 and then Championship Manager came along in 1993 for Amiga/PC and there starts a long series trail to MLG and co. Everyone who like football was glued from CM 93/94 with the real players in it.

Sending tactics in by post? I'm sure Redknapp employed this method in our relegation season.

(Longstaff) Did his knee badly soon after all that Man United speculation. Has been absolute garbage since he returned to fitness. Newcastle fans would be glad to be shot of him.

Similar story to mine!

I watched Tosin last night albeit playing Millwall. He looked very accomplished and in control. No ball watching, a good passer and looked quick. Better than any we've got. Why not go for two centre backs and try and offload Stephens. Rumour has it Fulham interested in Obefemi.

Fulham supporting friend of mine said of Tosin;

“Erm I like him, but I'd say he's better alongside a good centre back partner. So for us he looked good alongside Anderson. But less so if Anderson injured and he had to be partnered by someone not as good. Anderson is the one you should have gone for.”

Yes. My dad grounded me when he found me sending cash in the post. I still have all the match reports somewhere...

Definitely our sort of signing then.

Completed just before the window closes, for Ralph to say if all goes well he should be training with the first team in February.

Interesting review of his season here, sounds great. Although I can’t help but feel there isn’t anything in the links as hardly been mentioned with us lot talking about him more than any concrete links

Good deal, invest in two good 25m players. Its the only way we will get better. Hasn't happened though has it?.

Sounds like we're in for Thierry Small then?

17 years old and Everton would be due £5m compensation.

Promising young left back and I think Everton's youngest ever player in the prem?

We are interested for sure.

Getting it done is another matter.

There is a lot of interest in this lad who i would put in the category as Livramento. He has turned down a very good offer from Everton who don't want to lose him because he wants to be playing first team football or at least see there is a possibility of it. He sounds like he would be perfect cover for Perraud. It's being quoted that we are the first club to have actually made a firm enquiry.

If we could pull this one off and he's anything like Livramento then we would have done some very good business!

I saw that story too. Excellent news that we're looking for another left back - essential IMO as we need competition. I hope he also can make the jump to first team immediately like Livramento has done. Get that over the line, a new CB and maybe attacking midfield and the squad will have been `refreshed'.

Think I would rather sign Cahill and another centre-back (Worrall?) to give the option of Salisu covering left-back.  We’ve also got right-backs who could cover there in an emergency.

Yes, Livramento is a brilliant signing.  But buying £5m 17 year olds is very hit and miss.  We should be spending the money we have got on improving the first team.  Our deficiencies are obvious.

We only need to sign one CB (unless any leave) as that would give us 4 in total plus Simeu which is plenty.

Meanwhile we still only have one LB in the whole squad and I'm fed up of having square pegs in round holes. Neither Salisu or Djenepo are the answer there, a young player who can develop and act as backup is perfect. If he's that highly rated then £5m isn't that big of a gamble.

This sort of signing needs to be in addition to signings that immediately strengthening the first team not instead of. Otherwise this sort of signing is irrelevant if we get relegated as if the player is any good they will leave anyway.

Thank God it hasn't. With 2 weeks left to the transfer window we have left it far too late to get anyone decent in and I don't think there would be £50m left anyway for replacements after Gao has trousered a good chunk of it. To lose Bertrand, Vestergaard, Ings and then our club captain / free kick specialist / penalty taker in one window would be suicidal.
