In none of that limited time did he show any glimpses of quality. At least we had occasional sparks of quality from Ramirez & Boufal, even though they ultimately failed at Saints. Elyounoussi did not show any sign of pace, dribbling ability, vision etc that makes it look like he is capable of performing at Premier League level in the role we'd use him.

The interesting thing to check would be what system Basel played and is it similar to our style or completely different.

He was Man of the match v Man City in a European game and scored 13 goals and 17 assists in the same season.

So was it a flash in the pan, a good system or an over performing player ?

We've all seen players look like world beaters in one off games then never do anything for the rest of their careers, doing it consistently over a 38 games season is another matter. He's obviously not a bad player but he's done well playing in much lower standard leagues than the premier league.

I really wanted Elyounoussi to be a success. But the first time I saw him was in the 3-0 defeat at Derby. And if a player like him cannot do it in a half-pace friendly game when the tackles are not flying in it doesn't inspire confidence for the Premier League. I agree he hasn't had many chances. But when he was given a go he showed absolutely nothing to suggest he should be given more time. And if the Lemina who wants to play like he did at the Hawthorns was to come back I would welcome him with open arms. But we all know we would just get the Lemina of Newcastle and Wembley.

You've all got much better memories than me as he's had so little opportunities I can't remember him playing at all, for better or worse. 

As for using that Derby game as a barometer, well he only played 45 minutes in that game which also featured Vestergaard, JWP, Steven Davis, Redmond, Armstrong...

People writing off Elyounoussi are holding our team to a higher standard than I've seen in a while.  I've no doubt he could match the output of most of our other attacking midfielders bar Armstrong if he had the same amount of opportunity.

I'm not against moving on from him and I think he has struggled at Saints but the question you have to ask yourself is - can we afford better?

I thought he had one pretty decent game.  I expect it was the last time he played so I guess Ralph didn't agree or thought we had better options. 

It looked like he needed to get up to speed, get used to the pace of the league, much as Diallo did when he first arrived.

Agree. Only Youtube clips seen but looks a better option than Che Adams did at the same stage from the clips of him.

So probably won't happen as we probably consider there are more prssing gaps to fill, unless we know there is a strikers void to fill.

Not totally transfer related, as well, he is already our player, but one to keep an eye out for.

Cant wait for him to make his debut at old Trafford in a couple of years 🙄

I thought Elyounoussi played as a left winger at Basel ?...(you remember those types who used to run the line - before we got wingbacks)

I think he's had a similar role at Celtic, and has certainly scored a lot of goals and made assists for them. 

He seemed to be stuck in a midfield role with Saints,  but ANYONE who can score goals in our side ought to be playing up top.

The live games I saw Ely play, i thought he was played as a right sided winger.

I also think he came into the side at a time when we were generally playing pretty shite, and that affected him quite badly.

I dont mind if we try to see how he goes, but wouldnt be surprised if he was moved on, if you like.

Not really, as I don't remember any real stand out performers under Hughes.

Elyounoussi's big flaw from what I remember, is that he had no acceleration. Whenever he received the ball it took him an age to get moving with it, and there always seemed to be a man on him immediately to nick it away. Maybe memory is playing tricks, but it feels like I saw him get reeled in and dispossessed literally every time he tried to dribble forward.

He played 5 times for us on the right, but he always plays left or centre for Celtic. He is right-footed so its no surprise that you would think he was a RW, but the reality is that he isn't.

Elynoussi isn’t the answer. He’s worse than Walcott, Armstrong, Redmond and Tella. He was woeful under Hughes and then immediately shipped out by Ralph (twice). He’s been in and out of an out of sorts Celtic team in a poor league. Best thing we can do here is get a few million cash and get him off the wage bill - although I doubt you’ll get many takers.

Oh i agree with you, in that he was always a LW for me, but he played more on the right for us. Id be ok giving him a chance in preseason.

Absolutely, he doesn’t have the natural ability IMO to play in the premier league.

Too slow, not technically good enough, doesn’t read the game particularly well, he’s just average to poor at everything.

If it was me and I had a choice between West Ham and ourselves it would be an easy choice at this moment in time tbh. He'll be confident enough in himself to oust Cresswell.

I guess we'll find out but if clubs like West Ham go in on the same players as ourselves then I don't really rate our chances.

The Athletic 1st linked us with Firpo back in January.  They mentioned we were likely to revisit the deal in the summer... So hopefully we've had enough time to work out if we can afford it or not.

He is still a former Barcelona player. You'd have a point if we were talking about a key Barcelona player. But Firpo isn't that, he is a fringe player who would be on wages within our structure and we can offer regular first team football to in a major European league. So I'm not sure why Saints going for him would mean he is not in his 'right mind'.
