Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 4 February, 2021 Share Posted 4 February, 2021 Has anyone got a list of our biggest defeats by season? I've got a horrible feeling that our club may feature more than any other when it comes to biggest defeats of the season. A good thumping seems to be an annual event for Saints. A few that come to mind, 7-0 at Luton. 7-1 at Watford. A 5-0 and a couple of 6-1's against Arsenal. 7-1 and 6-1 against Liverpool. 7-1 at Everton. Spurs have often put 5 past us and I seem to recall them beating us 7-2.
Chocolate Box Posted 4 February, 2021 Share Posted 4 February, 2021 Leeds anyone? God I've lived through some tough times, and still I believe!
Lighthouse Posted 4 February, 2021 Share Posted 4 February, 2021 In 2 years under Koeman we only lost 8 league games by more than one goal. 3 of those were against Man City and our biggest defeat was 0-3.
Badger Posted 4 February, 2021 Share Posted 4 February, 2021 Leeds c 1971 was the stand out humiliation at the time which was broadcast to the nation on MOTD at a time only two matches were shown to the country that night. Remember Barry Davies wanking lyrical over that match in his commentary. Available on YouTube for any sado-masochists. Leeds certainly a most dislikable club at the time. Everton away about the same time was an 8-0. At least no one can accuse us of being glory seekers.
Paul.Studio Posted 4 February, 2021 Share Posted 4 February, 2021 I believe i lived through a 3 week period where we lost 8-0 Everton 7-0(1?) v Leeds and then lost to UTD in the Cup 5-2. The Daily Mirror had a picture of Eric Martin holding up his hands in front of the camera! (couldnt see the two bloody holes that must have been in them!) Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 5 February, 2021 Author Share Posted 5 February, 2021 I was looking at the Koeman era and that seems to have been one of our better periods defensively. Just remembered that Man City stuck 6 past us in 2018. I honestly can't think of another team who've had as many annual hidings.
OttawaSaint Posted 5 February, 2021 Share Posted 5 February, 2021 (edited) Remember United (7-1) and Everton (7-1) putting 7 past us, Arsenal 6, Luton 6 (6-1), Spurs (6-2 aet), Charlton 5 (5-0) and Derby I think getting 5 against us too. I first really got into football in 1970, but 71/72 is the season I started going regularly, I was an 'Alehouse Brawlers' fan. The 8-0 and 7-0 humiliations may have been enough to put some off for good but from soon after that point I never missed another home game in the league for over a decade and was also travelling around the country by the mid-70s. There was that other 7-0 at Ipswich a few years later but the first real humiliation I was there to witness was the 7-1 at lower league Watford. The 7-2 at WHL and 2-6 at the Dell v spurs were two particularly tough ones to witness. Rarely a dull moment. rallyboy Posted 5 February, 2021 Share Posted 5 February, 2021 I've been there when we've conceded 7 at Luton and Spurs, 6 at Everton, and 5 at Man United. Then again I've seen us score 8 on two occasions. All of those beat any Claude Puel 0-0 masterclass.
St.Jeweller Posted 5 February, 2021 Share Posted 5 February, 2021 Always remember the 7-1 Everton defeat as I lost my cherry that night. Had very mixed emotions on that Sunday morning 😆
Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 6 February, 2021 Author Share Posted 6 February, 2021 So at what point do people consider a score to be a thrashing? Is 4-0 a thrashing or just a bad day at he office?
