Biggest defeats

Has anyone got a list of our biggest defeats by season? I've got a horrible feeling that our club may feature more than any other when it comes to biggest defeats of the season. A good thumping seems to be an annual event for Saints.

A few that come to mind, 7-0 at Luton. 7-1 at Watford. A 5-0 and a couple of 6-1's against Arsenal. 7-1 and 6-1 against Liverpool. 7-1 at Everton. Spurs have often put 5 past us and I seem to recall them beating us 7-2.

Leeds c 1971 was the stand out humiliation at the time which was broadcast to the nation on MOTD at a time only two matches were shown to the country that night.

Remember Barry Davies wanking lyrical over that match in his commentary. Available on YouTube for any sado-masochists.

Leeds certainly a most dislikable club at the time.

Everton away about the same time was an 8-0.

At least no one can accuse us of being glory seekers.

I believe i lived through a 3 week period where we lost 8-0 Everton 7-0(1?) v Leeds and then lost to UTD in the Cup 5-2.

The Daily Mirror had a picture of Eric Martin holding up his hands in front of the camera! (couldnt see the two bloody holes that must have been in them!)

06/07 3-1 v Preston & Man City.
07/08 5-0 v Hull & Sheff Wed. 5-1 v Preston.

09/10 4-1 v P*mpey.
10/11 3-0 v Swindon Town
11/12 3-0 v Brighton & Blackpool.

Is 4-0 considered a thumping or just a shit result? At what point do people consider a result a thrashing???

In 29 seasons, Saints have conceded 4 or more goals in a game in 24 of those seasons.
5 or more goals in 15 of those seasons. 6 or more in 9 season. 7 or more in 5 seasons and 8 or more in 2.
There have only been 5 seasons where they've not conceded more than 3 goals in a game.

I first really got into football in 1970, but 71/72 is the season I started going regularly, I was an 'Alehouse Brawlers' fan. The 8-0 and 7-0 humiliations may have been enough to put some off for good but from soon after that point I never missed another home game in the league for over a decade and was also travelling around the country by the mid-70s.

There was that other 7-0 at Ipswich a few years later but the first real humiliation I was there to witness was the 7-1 at lower league Watford. The 7-2 at WHL and 2-6 at the Dell v spurs were two particularly tough ones to witness.

Rarely a dull moment.
