Steve Moran

My brother got hit on the head by an empty whisky bottle and needed stitches, they took him up to the hospital,  but he had to make his way back to the ground wearing red and white. After the match we made our way to the train station, by the time the train left i don't think there was any  windows left, our friends in blue decided to smash them by throwing bricks etc. But who cares what a day.

One of the most memorable games and momentous in following Saints.

My cousin was working in Southsea in the weeks before the match and arranged for us to meet him in a pub there before the game. Surprisingly the regulars were fine even knowing we were Saints fans.

the walk to and from the ground were a bit tense but okay. Recollections are getting thoroughly pissed on Friary Meux that lunchtime and of course the goal and subsequent celebrations

Steve Moran though, looked a gray and special talent when he arrived in the scene 1980, and 81, even tipped for the 1982 WC squad, “another Keegan” he was touted as after we beat Man Utd at the Dell (Dec 81).

Great shame he never seemed to recover from a back injury to fulfill that potential.

Met him once whilst he played for Reading, was quite humble about his time with Saints, saying he was “privileged” to be able to play in that team of Channon, Keegan and Ball.

Yes, he was quite a bit before my time but looking at his record for us it looked like he had the potential to get close to Channon in terms of goalscoring record at one stage. Instead he was out of the top flight by 25 and looks like he had a pretty middling lower league career afterwards unfortunately.

Last I heard was that Steve Moran was working as a HGV driver in Hull and was also doing an occasional stint on radio up on Humberside.
I seem to remember that, as a youngster, he was attacked by a Pompey Youth player in a night club down around the 'dark side'
I think he originally lived in the Fareham area.

I knew Steve well and went to school with him at Prices in Fareham, he lived next door to a great mate of mine in Warsash.  He won the Young Player of the Year award one year I think, possibly the same year Keegan was Player of the Year.  Last time I saw him was a few years ago at the Village Inn in Park Gate, had an interesting chat about his move and time at Leicester.

My first hero as a young Saints fan. Hard to compare today's players against those of Moran's generation. Both excellent finishers and good pace, although possibly Ings all round game is better. If Moran hadn't got that back injury when we were challenging for the title, I genuinely believe we would have won in that year.

37 years ago!! Oh what a day!!! The thrill of that goal never wanes. 9000 Saints fans at Fratton enjoying the goal that will always be remembered. These few years in the 80's were IMO the best years in Saints history,

That cup run in '84 was one of the best times I had on the road. Forest, skates, Blackburn (good turnout for a Friday night, live on BBC), Sheff Wed (10k travelling for the Sunday game live on BBC) and Highbury for the semi, went to all, great days out. That entire season was memorable - other than the semi-final and missing the title by 3 points!

Too true. I went to every game and was convinced that the Cup was ours. One day I may even get over that semi final defeat.
