SaintBobby Posted 9 January, 2021 Share Posted 9 January, 2021 (edited) Anyone know if we're the first club to have been top and bottom of the Premier League/First Division table in the same season? I'm trying to recall, but think we were bottom as we kicked off againt Burnley? Not totally sure on that though. Obviously, we went top after beating Newcastle. I'm not counting the "live in play" table - which fluctuates wildly over the first few games - just the table when there is no football actually in progress. I guess there must be a time when the eventual champions lost their first match heavily or the team finishing bottom won their first match convincingly? Anyway, it's an (even more) irrelevant question if we weren't actually in 20th place just before the Burnley game.... Stu Man Do Posted 10 January, 2021 Share Posted 10 January, 2021 What about Blackburn or Man City? Reckon they’ve both been too and bottom at some point in the premier league years.
SNSUN Posted 10 January, 2021 Share Posted 10 January, 2021 If memory serves, I think Blackpool's Premier League season started with a huge win and then they got relegated, so without checking they may have been top and bottom in the same season. They won 4-0. Chelsea won by 6 goals on the same day but were the late kickoff. So Blackpool were very briefly top... https://www.premierleague.com/matchweek/706/table
Badger Posted 10 January, 2021 Share Posted 10 January, 2021 Before the Premier League era, but I suspect Carlisle might also have been top and bottom of the old Division One the same season. Won their first match away at Chelsea quite comfortably but pretty sure ended bottom of the table. 1974/5 from recollection
Badger Posted 10 January, 2021 Share Posted 10 January, 2021 Have just read up on Carlisle in 1974/5 season. They were top after three games, but relegated as finished bottom. To make this Saints related, the Carlisle side that season included John Gorman who became Hoddle’s assistant, and centre half Bill Green (scored their first goal in Division One at Chelsea on the opening day) who was later one of Saints main European scouts. I believe we were 19th ahead of the Burnley game, ahead of WBA on goal difference. https://www.premierleague.com/match/58909
