a) Why do players need to spit and

b) why isn't it banned?

I cannot think of a better(if that's the right word) way to spread the virus. For some reason the camera seems to relish revolting close ups of the players spitting.

Players can later  fall onto the spit that is laying on the grass not to mention the ball being  handled when coated with traces  saliva picked up off the grass.

A) Take it you don't play much football... I believe its a combination of exercise creating extra protein in the salvia alongside the consistent shouting making the mouth dryer. This then creates a thicker salvia than usual and thus is unpleasant/more difficult to swallow.

B) How do you intend to regulate spitting on a football pitch? Do we have VAR cameras on every player to monitor their spitting activity? What happens when Pogba gets a 2nd yellow for spitting but there was 22 previous occasions of spitting in that game which did not get picked up? We could have all the players use some some sort of anti spitting muzzle.

Why is it spitting is more frequent in football than other sports then? Hockey and rugby players for example don't spit constantly through games.

That's because they're wearing gum shields..

You can still spit with gum shields in. Even if you couldn't, there are plenty of other non gum shield using sports where players don't spit like footballers.

What Hockey are we talking about? Ice Hockey spit frequently onto the rink and it is allowed within rules. But yes I get your point. Some sports it is not practical to allow spitting. Obviously Basketball players are not allowed to spit onto the court as its wooden and would linger/make someone slip. It is allowed in Rugby however and they spit just as much as footballers do. On a grass pitch I assume most of the salvia is absorbed by the grass/soil?

I play a lot of football and don't spit, however a lot of people I play with do spit. I dont think it is a physical thing, I think it is a habit

That'll be the toss of a coin then!

No, it will be a bye like Spuds got in the League Cup. Looking at the fixtures the only week day they can squeeze it in is the week we are away to Leeds United on the Wednesday. So its fourth round day or a bye

Why wait until next week to decide what to do? Aren't there rules already in place for this sort of thing? It's not exactly something that's an unknown unknown is it?

Seems simple to enough to me. Shrewsbury should forfeit. Tough on them but it's not the end of the world, unlike for thousands of others.

The Shrewsbury statement says they have reluctantly informed the FA that they are unable to fulfil the fixture.

Therefore would expect Saints to be given a bye.

Maybe the FA are waiting to see who we draw in rounds 4 and 5 to see if the logistics allow for a 'ripple effect' reschedule. In other words, if we're not drawn against teams that are in Europe in round 4 or 5 then they could conceivably bump our 3rd round tie into round 4 week and round 4 into round 5 etc. Dunno, just thinking out loud...

Hopefully that just means a bye into Round 4. Wish them well and everything but why should our team suffer from the knock on effects of fixture congestion because Shrewsbury couldn’t field a full team.

Good question. I never spat whilst playing foot ball, rugby, cross country  running, or rowing for Bedford rowing club, I formed a football club whilst at Totton Grammar  with my classmates in the fifties to counter only allowed to play rugby at the school. The Sunday People wrote about us. I thought one had to keep hydrated not loose fluids by spitting

Euro's will happen, they won't postpone that again. Lots of $$$$ invested in that. It will go ahead in 'secure bubbles' and no fans.

I’ve heard otherwise, but no idea whether it’s just a thought or something more black and white than that. Would not surprise to see a break in the season shortly and the Euros cancelled.

That would be huge, there'd be no rearrangement of it either due to the World Cup next year!

I do believe we will probably see the season halted shortly, so many games being postponed everywhere atm. There comes a point where you just cannot make a decent competition out of it, no matter how hard you try. You could end up with some teams with 6 games in hand!

All getting weird.

There is very little scope for the teams in European competitions to rearrange many more league cancellations if they progress deep into those European competitions, I think Man City may already be at the point where they would be playing every mid week if they get to semis/finals.  The hard deadline of finishing by 23rd of May for the Euros is going to be quite a challenge.

They drew the League Cup in a similar fashion too I believe.

I’m in two minds about whether I’d want to draw the skates with no fans there to see it played 🤔

Just a thought but I wonder if Ralph was planning to use this game to give some of our youngsters some game time ,if so I would imagine he would rather the game went ahead even if it did add to our match schedule.

sounds like they will have to forfeit if they cant field a team. they dont have a u23s so cant do what villa are doing against liverpool and playing the youngsters

"The Football Association’s Professional Game Board will meet early next week to decide whether the game can be rescheduled. But the FA stressed in a letter to clubs last Friday that the matches must go ahead if both teams had 14 fit registered players available – and if a club had to postpone a fixture then the PGB was likely to award the tie to their opponents."

I’d rather play them cos if we go all the way we’d have the skates down the road saying .. we didn’t out right win all the rounds cos of bye they’d ridicule it .. not having that I work with some skaters they’d be all over that ! I wana gloat with no technicalities!! #upthescum

A deliberate mistake to give you pedants something to satisfy your urges to pick fault.

Why not blame your auto-correct? I always blame my iPad. Sometimes I swear it even changes the text after I have posted it.

I think we'll start to see the guilty teams forfeiting or a draw being awarded if both teams are unable to field a team. Particular clubs have taken the piss and should be punished.

A lot of our fans basically advocating the Klopp protests almost a year on. No more fixture congestion 😅

Loose can mean to set free or to fire; you can loose an arrow, so potentially can loose phlegm. 😉

Of course I am waiting for MLG to shoot me down but there could be some truth to it maybe?

That's what's being reported in various papers today, Saints should be kicking off about if, as should Villa and Derby who had to play nippers.

Shrewsbury should have been kicked out yesterday or played with u18s. Why should Saints have to squeeze more games in.

Pompey ball is no 21 🙏🏻..I’d love it if we drew them ! But shame we couldn’t see it live ! Beating them at their garden shed was one of the best away games I’ve been too (atmosphere wise !)..the game was so one sided .. trying to get back to the train station was a touch tricky mind lol 😂

The game was one sided in favour or Pompey for the first 20!

Pompey out - so any dreams of drawing them out of the hat have gone. Fair play to Crawley, that was a very decent display against Leeds. I thought Leeds first choice keeper has been dodgy all season (he only looks about 12 years old) but I can see why he hasn't been dislodged - their keeper yesterday was awful. I wonder if they might come in for Forster if we were to recall Gunn from his loan.......or even come in for Gunn. Just a thought.
