Fulham vs Saints — Build-up & Match

Fulham are one of the promoted teams who have something about them, they have a threat in attack and I think they have improved at the back as well - I like the CB they have on loan from Lyon.

Diallo is the obvious swap in CM. I'm interested to see him from the start as he's impressed me in his sub appearances with his mobility with and without the ball.

Some people are laughable on this forum, slagging certain players off. Ok Redders might have been a bit off colour today but my word get behind him. He's only just come back after injury and scored a super goal last week :)

I'd prefer Redmond to Djenepo personally, and Armstrong back for Ings. Would expect Diallo in for Romeu.

Fulham not a bad side on their day, should have beaten Liverpool last week.

Anderson suspended and Lemina ineligible at least but guarantee Les Reed's son will have the game of his life against us.

Any question marks whether this will go ahead with tier 4 restrictions? Idiots making the rules don't seem to have a clue so wouldn't surprise me If elite sport is postponed if people can't even pop round their mums to give a Christmas present.

Government guidelines say that Tier 4 elite sport can continue, so I guess the only way it would be off would be if there was a positive test at either club.

Just fuck Redmond off to somewhere from which he cannot return.

Might be why when he did score and was heading towards fans in the Kingsland he suddenly stopped, turned and ran to celebrate in the empty corner opposite.

He's a bit inconsistent and that's enough for some of our fans to dish out grief.

He was first off the pitch yesterday. At the end pretty much everyone clapped the players and most came over to clap back, or at least did it from the centre circle. Redmond couldn't wait to get back to the dressing room.

Redmond like Long have had 1 good season with us and he's been in the team over the years for his defensive work.

Hes a good squad player just don't think he suits this decisive offensive system we play, he's too hesitant and doesn't have the goal scoring quality we need.

Over the 5 seasons he has played for us including the current he has 19 goals 16 assists.

It looks more and more like Redmond had a bit of a purple patch over half of that season (when he won player of the season, stood out in the 2nd half of that season under Ralph - he wasn't amazing in the first half of that season)

As soon as he signed his new deal he has regressed back to the same as he was under Puel, Hughes and MP before. Doesn't take players on, goes backwards too much, poor control, poor decision making.

He's sub appearance yesterday really annoyed me. It was an opportunity to come on and impact the game, but he took us backwards. (literally)

Walcott, in his few months with us, looks 10x the player Redmond is.

Absolutely. I think Redmond has been poor since the first "come back" games in June. He's regressed under Ralph's system whilst others have flourished. I too thought he would come on yesterday with a determined "i'll show you" attitude but he was crap, might as well have left Djenepo on.

Next two games Vs Fulham and West Ham  are somewhat pivotal... 4 points or more and we stay in the mix for a Europa slot, 3 points or less and we fall back into our 'default' mode (aka mid table obscurity).

Assume the starting 11 will be:

McCarthy

KWP - Bednarek - Vest - Bertrand

JWP - Diallo

Redmond - Armstrong

Adams - Walcott

Got to win this really to avoid looking like we’ve had a bit of a slump.

And especially when looking at the next 5 League fixtures after Fulham against Westham (h), Liverpool (h), Leicester (a), Leeds (a) and Arsenal (h)!

Not the worst set of fixtures really. Ok Liverpool will be tough, but Leeds and Arsenal aren’t exactly terrifying and Leicester’s home form is awful.

Probably the strongest group we can field.

Lemina brilliant for them yesterday but obviously can’t play against us so that’s good. Andersen out and has been one of their improvements in defence. Got to win this really to avoid looking like we’ve had a bit of a slump.

Lemina can be brilliant. Presumably there is no recall option, I don’t think Ralph would have him anyway. Bit of a shame, as we have a painfully thin squad which may make the next period difficult for us.

Smallbone is in training and probably still ahead of both of them in the pecking order.

Ah, yes, forgot all about him! Has he been injured? Don't think he's featured in either the 'A' or 'B' team squads the last few weeks, has he?

P.s. hasn't Smallbone deputised for Armstrong earlier in the season, i.e. he's not a "No.6", in Ralph speak, per se...?

He has been injured but now back.

As for position, Hasenhuttl quote...

"The good thing is that he can play No.10 and No.6, at No.6 he feels a bit more comfortable maybe, but on a No.10 he also can get in the box and create something."

Fair enough... I just don't see Smallbone as an 'enforcer' type player (i.e. he's a bit lightweight) whereas Jankewitz looks more suited to that role (IMO).

I find it a little hard to believe some of the posters on here. Ralph has transformed the dross 'crab football' we played under the previous three managers and yet some of them are still complaining. When was the last time we were up there in the thick of it? If we continue with our improvement, its possible we can have a total of thirty points after  winning our next two games. At last we have a group of players who can perform and entertain us. Time to stop the bloody moaning and start to be positive again. COYS

Fulham play some nice football, but I’m hoping we’ve got too much for them especially with two key players out. Reed will be looking to shine that’s for sure, but he can be a bit rash in the tackle so a good bet for free kicks on the edge of the area or even a pen. Diallo will start obviously and I think we’ll see Armstrong back in too with Theo up top.

2-1 Saints.

I don't understand why, after looking like such a top player whilst running at defences and taking players on, he's suddenly regressed to his big standard "jog forward, defender steps up, cut inside and lay the ball off to Bertrand or a midfielder, rinse and repeat".

We aren't criticising the manager, the football we play at all we are looking at where we think we are weakest in the system he plays and speculating what we would change to make us stronger.

If you want a sense of perspective try going on liverpools forum, all they do is moan about everything

Swap Djenepo for Redmond and I agree.

Let's face it, football fans are fickle. If a player has a dip in form the fans are on his back and then when he improves, he's great. The same with managers. Supporters want them out of the door if results are bad but a run of wins and they are world class. That 9-0 thrashing turned out to be a blessing in disguise because that gave Ralph and his players the kick up the backside they all needed. The improvement in the team has been a pleasure to watch. They look like they care about putting a Saints shirt on and playing for each other and the club. The change in players like Vestergaard, in particular, is amazing. He looks nothing like the liability he was in defence just a short time ago. It's great to be where we are in the League at the moment. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.

I think we'll lose this one. They have turned it around, and Lookman looks (sorry) dangerous. Would be happy with a point. We underestimate their resurgence at our peril. But someone give Lemina a kick please, if he's allowed to play...

Agree this is a harder proposition now than it was a few weeks ago. At home, Fulham can dominate.

Diallo in for Romeu is an easy decision. And I think he will shine, and become a starter very soon. He has had to wait, now is his time.

Like Lighthouse (above) I wonder if Ralph will simply start N'Lundulu up top, leaving the wingers unchanged? If it isn't working for him, then revert to Walcott alongside Adams.

Maybe not a must-win, but we do need to get a win soon, as we're dropping off the pace.

I like Redmond, and always back him. But there’s no doubt about it Saturday was one of his worst performances for us, he missed the ball or put it straight out of play on multiple occasions. I don’t think it’s unfair to point that out, he looked really out of sorts. Hopefully it was just a tough game to get into and the conditions didn’t help. Djenepo starts for me, he’s a live wire and unpredictable, and can do the defensive work too.

It was a very good goal. But a classic Redmond goal in that it was calm and sweetly finished with the game already wrapped up. His record when scoring under pressure is pretty woeful in my opinion. I just went through his EPL goals in the last 2 seasons.

Sheffield United- scored the 3rd in a 3-0 win

Norwich- scored the 3rd in a 3-0 win

Palace- good boy scored the 1st in a 2-0 win

Chelsea- scored 2nd in a 2-0 win

Brighton- scored 2nd in a 2-0 win

That's not to say that scoring the 2nd in a 2-0 win isn't important. Of course it is and secures us the points. But in theory we could have still won the game even without it. And I feel he struggles to convert in vital moments. Like that chance against Arsenal. I bet if we were still winning he would have buried it. Compare him to Djenepo, who has only scored 3 goals for us, but every single goal has been vitally important.

I would bring Redmond on in this game if we are winning, but I certainly would not be starting him or bringing him on if we need a winner/equaliser.
