Arsenal 1-1 Saints - Reaction

I saw this result coming a mile off to be honest.

They weren't going to lose 5 or 6 on the bounce, they're too professional for that.

We didn't really go for the throat, but they defended well and blocked the space well in the 2nd half particular.

But I'll take the point and go, I didn't think we'd ever get more than that tonight.

Frustrating in as much as we did enough to win the game but you've got to respect the away point.

That's twice we've gone against 10 men and failed to capitalise. Perhaps something for Ralph to work on with the team as sitting very deep seems to be enough to stop us.

I was also confused as to why that penalty wasn't re-checked, but there we go.

As I said in the other post, I'd have taken a point all night long. I didn't see us winning tonight because I didn't see Arsenal losing 5 or whatever on the bounce at home, they've still got good players and I couldn't see them let that happen - and they didn't.

We didn't really go for their throats after 30 mins and we did sit back a bit, bit tippy tappy in the 2nd half - but they basically threw two banks of 4 in front of us, very compacted through the middle and our inverted winger idea wasn't really working.

We did get in behind them a couple of times, but we needed to do it more - that's how you get around that kind of 4-4 block.

Never mind, take the point and go. Shame the next one is against City, but we did them last year.

God the ref could not wait to blow up there, despite only 2 minutes worth of play at the end. I'm a former ref so usually try to be sympathetic. But that last 15, fuck me. The freekick against Vestegaard in the Arsenal penalty box, the freekick against JWP, the freekick which they nearly scored off, the Djenepo penalty shout. Even gabriel could have been sent off earlier as he committed 3 to 4 yellow card challenges. These were 50/50 that all fell in Arsenal favour.

That said, at end of season this will still look like a decent point and the boys overall did well. The penalty shout was annoying. In a season where you get a penalty for breathing on someone, it seemed pretty stonewall that he ran straight into the man with possession in the penalty box and nowhere near the ball

I say this after most games, but we still need more from the middle '2' in the 3 sets of '2'. Djenepo, Armstrong and Redmond not doing enough and to me is the most critical position to improve. Other than that we were good, but lacking a true creative player. Mind you, they are difficult to find so don't blame the card for not having one.

I know it is shithousing tactics, but in situations like this I would like to see someone like Redmond or Djenepo try and cut across and buy a soft freekick. JWP is arguably the best in Europe right now for freekicks, we should try and be sneaky and win some more especially if a side is sitting deep.

Disgraceful that the penalty shout wasn't reviewed, let alone given.

As the commentator said, everything is reviewed. If it had been given against us we'd all be fuming, I think it was a fair shout. Saints very easy on the eye tonight and although we should have been more aggressive when against 10 men I'm not unhappy with a point.

A cursory look of a challenge where he run full pelt into the saints player and floored him isn't reviewing it.

If that was given against us I'd have been fuming with whoever made such a stupid challenge.

(Not everything is reviewed anyway - only every goal is reviewed. After one replay on Amazon we were already taking the corner).

Really disappointed. That was a better penalty shout than many I've seen given lately. We lacked a bit of cutting edge, Djenepo had a few chances to put it in a plate for others, a few of ours neglected to shoot when well placed.

I think that Ralph was really wary of them breaking and scoring a very underserved winner. So frustrating that we literally switched off for 30 seconds and they got their goal. Walcott should have just fouled their player by the touchline and taken a yellow.

I guess it shows how far we've come that we are lamenting various situations after a draw at the Emirates.

Take the point and move on I guess.

Respect the point.   It's a measure of how well we've done this season that we are disappointed not to have taken all 3.  But it's a bit of a crazy season, if you think you feel bad now how do you think the city fans felt last night when they could only manage a draw against WBA.  All told I'm over the moon at our form this season.

Djenepo touched the ball, then the Arsenal player just knocked him over without any attempt at playing the ball. I've seen penalties given for a lot, lot less. The fact it wasn't even reviewed is ridiculous. Said it before we are too nice sometimes, if that was Liverpool they would have surrounded the referee screaming at him to review it, we have half hearted appeals and then it's 'Carry on chaps'

Disappointed, that game was there for the taking

In relation to our performances and Arsenals form, that has to go down as a disappointing game. After scoring we were just too damned pedestrian and didn’t look a threat. The disallowed pen was a complete injustice which deserved proper review - I just cannot see how it was not given...Djenepo landed on his arse!

Having said all that, I did predict 1-1 and that’s what happened. Another game with dropped points in the second half. But we’re up one place and still in touch with the leaders. What’s not to like?

As weird as it sounds, that's definitely 2 points dropped.

We seemed to lack a bit of belief and bravery on the ball after they went down to 10, almost as if we were a bit scared to lose the game.

Ohwell if we get something on Saturday it won't be the worst result in the world.

Looked a pen to me, but Djenepo often dives, so maybe a bit of a `boy that cries wolf' situation. Don't think VAR gave it a serious look though. Far too quick to say not pen. We've had a lot go our way, so can live with it.

Certainly disappointing. We looked a bit flat and our lack of creativity let us down. At times we were too laid back and that lack of urgency comes from tiredness. Superb goal from Theo but few other highlights and their equaliser seemed to be inevitable. Danny well off form at the moment and it's costing us dearly especially as Adams is winning his aerial battles and laying the ball off well.

We shouldn't be satisfied with this performance or 1 point, Arsenal were there for the taking and we should have put them to the sword. Ralph will not be pleased at our failure to break their lines. Up to third though and a chance to cement our position at the weekend.

Bloody Amazon commentators spent 90% of the pre-match talking Arsenal and it wasn't much better during the match. The whole media thing stinks of bias and nepotism.

Their shout under the Bednarek challenge in the first half was as much of a pen as our second half shout.

We got what we deserved. We hardly created any real pressure on the goal all match. The one time Romeu decides not to foul someone going past him....

Still a decent enough performance. Ings is not playing at his max so let's hope he gets back to it soon.

Dropping points against the dross...horrible feeling that it may come back to haunt us if we just come up short for the title.

Agree, although to be fair Arsenal did carry a threat down their left and before the red were perhaps favouriites to go on and wi the game. As soon as they got a red that meant we'd get a draw, but we dont have the craft to unlock ten men deep behind the ball.

VAR would have checked it without the ref's input. The video ref decided no pen.
