Betting on which of 2  flies will leave the dog turd first used to be a joke - reading that you obviously really can now get odds on such a two horse race.

All the moaning at a misplaced pass these last few seasons from the stands at SMS must be all the silly buggers who have just had their bet vanish down the gurgler by 23.5 seconds.

Southampton

  • Moussa Djenepo (101 mistakes) - Mistake every 5 minutes
  • Nathan Redmond (60 mistakes) - Mistake every 5 minutes 29 seconds
  • James Ward-Prowse (153 mistakes) - Mistake every 6 minutes 28 seconds

If this is what fans  choose to focus on then it surely comes as no surprise that we have performed far better with no fans in the stadium!

A player can make zero mistakes (whatever that's defined as) by only passing backwards and sideways, never taking any risk. Exactly what plenty of fans complain about and guaranteed to create no chances, no goals.

To win games you have to be brave and take risks. Sometimes it will come off with big rewards. If it turns into a "mistake", the character of a team is shown by switching into the transition and winning the ball back.

This really is everything that is wrong with football analysis and says nothing useful.

Contrary to most people on this forum, I'm a big fan of statistics in football - xG and all that.

However this particular report is pretty much useless, considering the metrics they use to quantify "mistakes". An unsuccessful tackle is a mistake? Losing a duel or aerial duel? As Shroppie says, based on those criteria, playing the game will generate loads of mistakes.
