Wes Tender Posted 7 December, 2020 Share Posted 7 December, 2020 A dour workmanlike performance all round. Brighton are a good team defensively and solid, but lack the goal scorer up top. Perhaps we were lucky to have got the penalty, but had it not been given, Ward-Prowse could have advanced his credentials by making it three in a row. Hasenhuttl made the right substitutions and tactical changes at half time and we looked better for it, winning the fifty fifty balls more often and improving our forward momentum, with Ings increasing the threat in the box and generally putting himself about well. We had a good spell for the last twenty minutes and after the penalty goal, we passed the ball around well denying Brighton possession apart from the odd slip up giving them the ball, but they didn't use it well mostly. 5th in the league after eleven games and no team having opened up a large gap at the top is an incredible achievement. And we broke the Monday night jinx too.
bpsaint Posted 7 December, 2020 Share Posted 7 December, 2020 Won’t go as far to say I feel sorry for Brighton but that must be hard to take and I’d be fuming if that decision went against us. 3 perhaps underserved points tonight makes last weeks result a bit easier to take when we deserved at least 1 and got 0.

Thought Vestergaard was so strong today. That header. Wow. That's going to put a shudder through a lot of defenses. It wasn't that long ago that default opinion on here was 'tall good-hearted guy, but clumsy, can't jump." Today he showed not just a sensational goal, but some great passing and pretty much rock solid at the back. Him, Romeu, JWP and Adams (and maybe McCarthy and Walker-Peters too) have really been the story of the season. Our own loyal boys just getting better, step by step. I have been one of Vestergaard's harshest critics but his passing tonight was superb. I like the way that, unlike some of our other defensive players, he always looks to pass the ball forwards and set up an attack. He will still struggle against the fastest forwards from the top teams, like Son and Vardy, but against most teams, he has become a solid defender. The best central defenders also score headed goals from corners and he certainly does that.

We essentially got a goal from a 50/50 call from a chance that was probably only likely to be 20% of scoring. I think there was a lot less danger with the Brighton penalty, and that definately was not intentional. March on the other hand, purposely brought KWP down because he had misjudged the Vest pass. He tried to do it just outside the box but was late. I see no great injustice in the penalty

The argument is though that KWP was nudged outside the box which technically is the first foul, and then him getting taken out in the box is the second foul, hence the controversy - did VAR decide the ref was wrong to award a foul for the first nudge and then decide it was a pen for KWP getting taken out? The fact that it is being talked about so much, and over analysed is everything that’s wrong with VAR - it’s not correcting clear and obvious errors, it’s making decisions entirely. Edit: Also Vest was outstanding tonight, glad we’ve seen the turnaround ourselves and not seen it with him wearing a Leicester shirt as with Hoj at Spurs. Dan Johnson Posted 7 December, 2020 Share Posted 7 December, 2020 Great result. The 3 pts are all that matter. Brighton set out to be hard to break down and hit on the counter with speed, they managed to neutralise our full backs for the majority of the game and almost capitalised a few times by playing out quick, they really lack creativity when not on the break though. When teams set out to be hard to break down, it makes it a difficult watch and you end up relying on set pieces which is what happened tonight. They limited us to two good opportunities from open play I can remember, Walcotts good effort and Redmonds effort he should have done better with. I thought they also coped with the high press pretty well. Dubious (ridiculous) decision for our penalty, I’d have been fuming if that was given against us, I’ll joyfully accept it when it’s for us though 😂 it felt like one of those games were a mistake or VAR intervention would have a big impact. Djenepo had an odd game, looked the most likely to create something in the first half while simultaneously flattering to deceive and looking like he could easily have been sent off! MOTM picks himself, Big Vesty! Literally head and shoulders above everyone tonight. Thought Romeu was exceptional too.

Wes Tender Posted 7 December, 2020 Share Posted 7 December, 2020 Looking back at the highlights on J W-P's handball, was it the case that he thought that Welbeck had hand-balled it and raised his arm to appeal? Otherwise it looks a really unnatural positioning of his arm unless it was deliberate, but he must know with VAR that he couldn't get away with that. Saint Pete Posted 7 December, 2020 Share Posted 7 December, 2020 Never ever a penalty that and everything that is wrong about VAR currently, interfering in decisions that it doesn’t need to, where the only clear and obvious thing is that there is no clear and obvious error by the ref! Maybe VAR should make a rule that if they need to review a decision for over a minute, they stay with the refs original decision as it can’t be a clear error if you have to watch it that many times? Having said that, I will take the win and 5th place in the table 😀 Particularly in a game where we really never got going. Very poor in the first half, aside from a superb header from Vestergaard just before half time which is always a great time to score. Our defending worried me all game but nothing unusual in that, apart from the defending from set pieces which was especially atrocious. Not sure who’s idea that high line from free kicks was but it needs a rethink for the next game. From open play, Vestergaard did play well though today, so fair play to him. We were a bit better in second half and the quality and work rate of Ings clearly helped us. Noticeable that others like Armstrong came into the game more once they had Ings buzzing around them. Now that Ings is back, would expect Djenepo to drop out to the bench and Theo to drop back out wide, although I would consider bringing Redmond back in for Theo as well if he is fully fit again. saintwbu Posted 7 December, 2020 Share Posted 7 December, 2020 Their pitch was absolutely terrible by the way, all our players looked off balance and finding it hard to twist and turn, I really don’t think that helped.
