Also, there's a school of thought that the 2nd was actually a Butcher OG. You can't tell either way from the TV pictures.

Maybe that’s why he’s so bitter about it.

As the years have gone on, the people involved have become more deranged over it. It’s as if Maradona cost us the World Cup, whereas the truth is we were only playing them at that stage because we finished below Morocco in the qualifying group.

The whole Robson era is bizarre, just because he was a nice bloke history has been rewritten. Maradona cost us in ‘86 & we were damn unlucky in ‘90, Gazza tears and all that. The truth is somewhat different. Robson was in charge during 4 major tournaments . In finals we only ma aged to beat Egypt, Poland & Paraguay in 90 mins, together with Cameroon & Belgium in extra time. We won 0 games at the euro finals, and his record is ;1 failure to qualify, 1 quarter final, 1 didn’t get out of group & 1 semi final  . In any other major football nation that would be considered a failure, but not here. Nice bloke he may have been, but he was a bloody average England manager.

I am not sure why people cling to the hope it was an own goal. Does that somehow take away the brilliance of the goal and so stops it counteracting the hand of god goal in their minds?

I think that's a little harsh although pretty much the reality. Remember the picture of him on the balcony chin in both hands after the first two group games as we were on the way out? I always thought Robson was a bit lucky but he did find a formation (after Robson and Wilkins got taken out through events not in his control) that started played half reasonably, late on in the group stages and took that into the knock out stages.

IMO We were never going to win that game against Argentina, even our goal was late on and a consolation. We kicked Maradonna about like we did with players that were too good for us but he didn't lie down or shrink away from it like lesser players, he got up and came back for more.

It always pisses you off at the time when someone cheats in a game but normally people get over that and retrospectively realise the reality. Maradonna though for some reason became this cartoon figure of hate who "cheated" us out of the world cup!
