One of the things that resonated with me was the section about Ralph orchestrating the tempo from his technical area. It's got me wondering whether the absence of crowd noise has made his input from the sidelines far more effective because the players can hear loud and clear what he is instructing them to do. I imagine with a full stadium most of his shouting is swallowed up by the noise of the fans.

I liked this line "Don’t let schoolboy looks or genial off-field personalities create false illusions. Southampton are a battle-hardened side, able to take you into deep waters and eventually drown you".

Perhaps that was his line of reasoning after his side’s 7-2 defeat to Tottenham, when most of the criticism focused around the employment of an outrageously high line. Instead, the Austrian refused to agree with that notion, stating an altogether different case. When did we lost 2-7 to Tottenham?

Expand I've read so many article about how Saints and Ralph are doing what they're doing I can't remember what was in which one. Plus it's made harder by the fact that I'm dyslexic! What I do remember as I was reading it though was, some posters on here have written about how Ward-Prowse has found a nastier side to his game!

The saints side is "long in the tooth" - its one of the youngest sides in the league.... James Ward Prowse's last England cap came 3 years ago? No... Saints are perennial relegation candidates? - We've finished top 8 more than we've been in a relegation crap. The Times really has let its standards drop. Edited 9 November, 2020 by Saint86
Colinjb Posted 9 November, 2020 Posted 9 November, 2020 So, one article says we are over the hill. The other states our squad is the third youngest in the league. Love it.
Dry Toast Posted 9 November, 2020 Posted 9 November, 2020 Some good reads there, sort of read then destroy. Didn't read The Times one obviously. Thanks.

I read it when I'm screwing up pages scrounged from a bin when laying the fire in my wood-burner and I noticed one columnist saying about Trump 'three years of foreign policy and economic successes before being hit by Covid' (a slight paraphrase)!
tajjuk Posted 10 November, 2020 Posted 10 November, 2020 We only have two first team players over 30 don't we? Bertrand and McCarthy. And most of our back ups, Walcott and Long aside, are young, like 22 and below.

Enjoyed the general tone of that, Spurs scoreline notwithstanding of course. I recall reading the redcafe ManU forum after our 2-2 last season and a post asking..."when did Southampton turn into such a bastard side to play against". I like that, I like that a lot.

Lord Duckhunter Posted 10 November, 2020 Posted 10 November, 2020 Decent article, far better than that arrogant smug twat Winter or professional Manc Holt. Hey ho - he is earning a crust for himself. Expand You sort of wonder whether he actually watched us play at all. I didn't have too much of a problem with the article, it was on the whole quite positive, until I read about Theo "it was a delight to watch him — back playing on the wing where he was born to play". Now I watched the match, and I got the impression that Walcott was playing through the middle behind Che, getting into the red zone as Ralph likes to call it, I don't recall him playing on the wing, unless he is referring to when KWP and Him stole the ball back from their defender to set up Adams' goal. It was in fact the first game where Walcott didn't play on the wing, but this tit thought otherwise, unless I am mistaken, and terminology these days means wingers are those who play through the middle.
