OttawaSaint Posted 6 November, 2020 Share Posted 6 November, 2020 (edited) Donald Trump: I’ve been the best Southampton fan for many years, great years, the other fans were surprised at how much I know. I was there at the great...magnificent kickball arena of St Marty’s. There for our crushing victories against Manchester Delighted, against Shell Sea City. We wore the red and white of the South...hambleton...with pride, bigger goals we made the goals bigger because it’s easy to score...know what I mean guys...haha score with a woman eh? There were many women... Edited 6 November, 2020 by OttawaSaint 1

A few years ago I randomly decided to pick Southampton as my favourite team but I never actually got into watching them since where I live the only way to watch games is to stream them. During the pandemic, the EPL was one of the first sport leagues to come back so I decided to chalk up the money to buy a DAZN subscription so I could watch. I wasn’t sure how interested I would be but I’ve quickly fallen in love with football! It’s honestly fascinating to myself how quickly Southampton have made me enjoy watching football so much. Very few of the elite players at the top clubs are willing or able to commit the effort necessary for Ralph's style. Plus, I think he's an honourable man who places a premium on commitment and loyalty, so I don't see him looking to head out at the first opportunity. Agreed. I can’t imagine the likes of Pogba and Martial being told to train and play in a Hasenhuttl team. He’s got a very fit, very hungry group of players playing in an organised systems where everyone knows their jobs and some have had to adapt to fit in. I couldn’t see big time players who think they are amazing buying into that. That said though if he carries on like this a big club will come in for him and he’ll go. Eventually he’ll want to prove himself at the very highest level

Saint Keef Posted 6 November, 2020 Share Posted 6 November, 2020 I can't remember who posted it here, but after 2 games (which we lost) that person was asking for Ralph to go and to get Big Sam in. I commented at the time and suggested we see where we were after 10 games.......never thinking we'd actually be top. Just thought I'd mention it again and hope your mattress has dried out by now! On a more serious note, I know Ralph recently signed a new deal. We need to extend that contract asap - and give him a pay rise - just to keep the "sniffers" away.

They exposed our system in the end but Ralph has since dropped the line back slightly and the players seem very comfortable now. Other than the second half against Spurs and the first half against Chelsea we have been well worth our current points total. Even though we lost to Palace we were ok and should have got a point at least.

The commentators were saying that Spurs were getting increasingly frustrated and how the half time score was not a fair reflection of the game. OK it all went pear shaped in the second half but that first half performance was a taste of what has come in subsequent matches. Just think where we would be if we had turned up against Palace. Hawkswood Posted 6 November, 2020 Share Posted 6 November, 2020 Once again, so many players you can pick for MoM, the very definition once again of the team playing for each other. Armstrong would edge it for me. Still can't believe we're top of the league, for however long. We totally deserve the praise for the way we're playing at the moment. Also, someone on here mentioned it a few days ago, but I think Bertrand was obviously a bigger loss than Ings today. Felt very stifled down our left, didnt it. Anyway, what a very satisfying few days to be alive.
saintwbu Posted 6 November, 2020 Share Posted 6 November, 2020 (edited) It does get frustrating to have our best players and staff picked off over the years, but I often think how lucky we are to have seen some of the fantastic footballers we have seen in recent years. Van Dijk, Mane, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Wanyama, Alderweireld, Lambert, Tadic, not to mention the managers. Bigger clubs than us can only dream of having seen such quality wear their shirt week in, week out. Tonight is another night where I feel lucky to be a Southampton fan, I am absolutely in love with this team. A mix of incredible workrate and teamwork, with great quality and a superb manager. I don't even want to pick out individuals because it is just such a brilliant team. A lot of clubs will never understand how it can be exciting to be top of the league for what we know is likely to be just a few hours. But for me it just sums up what it's like to be a Saints fan. It can be tough, but it can be absolutely brilliant. Edited 6 November, 2020 by saintwbu Forgot Tadic!!

OttawaSaint Posted 6 November, 2020 Share Posted 6 November, 2020 To think of some of those Puel/Pelligrino/Hughes performances where we were clueless, slow, boring, ponderous, shot shy etc. We’d be furious with the players. In contrast is this team, so hard working and likeable. RH has worked wonders with some of the players who have belonged to both eras.

mcbendy Posted 6 November, 2020 Share Posted 6 November, 2020 So many good performances. JWP and Armstrong were great, KWP was great, Theo slotted in so so well and created problems all night, plus pressed and tracked back well. ***BUT*** my MotM was definitely Adams. Not because he was stand-out better than any of the others, but because he REALLY stepped up to the next level when we needed him to. He held the ball up brilliantly, created loads, pressed brilliantly, covered so much ground tirelessly and took his goal really well. We knew what KWP, JWP and Armstrong could do, but that was the best game that Adams has had in a Saints shirt, right when we needed it. He linked up so so well with Theo too. If they continue to connect like that then we needn't fear Danny being out for a while. We BATTERED them 😃 I was in Newcastle a couple of seasons ago for that 3-1 loss where Perez got a hat-trick and Lemonface scored for us (my son's first ever Saints game). So this win is doubly sweet.

Can't stop watching the replays of it. Superb technique to hit that first time, as it came at him very fast from a short distance away so he had no time to think about what to do. He had a similar effort away at Sheff Utd last season that smashed against the post. If that had gone in and he had broken his duck then the rest of his season might have turned out very differently.

Gordon Mockles Posted 7 November, 2020 Share Posted 7 November, 2020 (edited) On the poll, I was torn between Vestergaard and Armstrong. Vestergaard definitely needs more votes as he was faultless. He even run off his line to intercept a couple of 50:50 balls and was like a greyhound out of the traps which is a huge HUGE improvement in mentality. This was hugely impressive. A superb all round, team performance. Concessions to my earlier criticisms of Vestergaard who has been a revelation this season and almost flawless in this match. Perhaps Leicester were right when tracking him, despite our disparaging comments. Romeu equally outstanding this season. Both have gone up a gear. Did you notice the madness of the defensive players attacking? Bednarek (CB) in the Newcastle goal mouth being set up (very unselfishly) by Vestergaard (CB) only to be blocked on the line and moments later, our defensive midfield stalwart (& obligatory yellow card oxen) who never scores - Romeu (CB) - nearly scoring another this season. Another stinging drive too, astonishingly saved by Darlow and tipped onto the crossbar (hats off to Mc Carthy for us at the other end who pulled off a worldie). Djenepo defending everywhere. Che was brilliant again and Armstrong was outstanding. KWP & JWP their usual, consistent class. Vestergaard almost faultless and must be our first choice centre back now. He’s learnt to read the game so much better this season. Stephens did well considering that’s not his natural position at full back although he had chance to pass forward a couple of times and sent it back but understandable as they are the defensive habits of a CB and he played it safe but that would be a harsh criticism. A brilliant team performance and even Sisquo was all over the park and defending and haranguing Newcastle like a demented Carlton Palmer dipped in peroxide. Let’s bask in the sunshine for 16hrs or more and hope United don’t mess up & we can enjoy the moment until Sunday at the very least. It must be so rewarding for Ralph to finally see the fruits of his labour finally taking root. He looked pleasantly surprised at how well the squad have taken the mantle. Well done to the squad and the entire coaching set up and Crocker. Hard work pays off. We were not perfect first half and after an initial boost and early goal, Newcastle settled and intercepted many passes and we hoofed and lost a fair few longer balls but we chased the ball back. That was the difference. We were organised and the entire team performed. What we sometimes lack in finess, we more than made up for in work ethic. We don’t have any multi million pound individual stars but we have a strong work ethic and huge self belief and that showed today. We hunt the ball like ravished wolves. The opposition are beginning to see that, we are gaining respect &, dare I say it, some opposition fear us. If they don’t. They should. Respect. CylonKing Posted 7 November, 2020 Share Posted 7 November, 2020 Just before the first lock down, we travelled down for the Saints-Newc match we lost 0-1, with Djenpo being sent off. We had the BEST weekend down in Southampton (cheers Hobbit, Rockstone and Firehouse, great pubs!) and despite the loss, we felt positive. Now, we're over the moon. The Koeman years were great but this feels like something really special. Ralph is the right manager for a club like us. I hope he stays for many years because the fit is perfect and credit to the leadership for recognising this and sticking with him. Plus, whilst some people may have thought getting Theo back served no purpose, in actuality what it did was brought some emotion and feeling to a club who wanted to welcome him back, and he's a great footballer for a TEAM like us. There is room for sentiment in Football. It truly is a great feeling to be a Saints fan tonight. I only started supporting as a glory hunter in the 83/84 season. 😁

Today he was one of many whom could have been motm. All offered the team unique strengths. His defence reading of the game is always exceptional but now he has enhanced his game with this new, outside the box proclivity of Frank Lampard esque shooting. Long may it continue. First we we Vestergaard doing a Gerrard v Brighton, JWP doing a Beckham v every team and now Mc Carthy doing a Petr Cech. 😉😂😂

SaintBobby Posted 7 November, 2020 Share Posted 7 November, 2020 Great performance...I was so nervous just because I wanted the "top of the league" thing to happen. JWP MotM for me, but shout out to Stephens....who played at left back FFS. We would have been better with Bertrand, obviously. And Djenepo - in front of him - also had a good game. But to come back into the team and to give a solid performance in an unfamiliar position was tip top. A 7/10 there is sort of worth a 9/10 if you see what I mean....
