OttawaSaint Posted 25 October, 2020 Share Posted 25 October, 2020 So a year ago we lost that 0-9 and have had to hear about it ad nauseam for a year. In that year, we must have probably the 6th or 7th best record in the EPL. Has anyone done the calculation? We can’t be too far off top 6 form for a whole year.

He clearly raises his arms in the innocent gesture BEFORE he rakes his studs down the back of KWP’s leg. Pros like to pretend that they would never deliberately go out to injure another player but Roy Keane busted that myth several years ago.

I don't watch Liverpool matches apart from MOTD highlights, but it will be interesting to see how long and how often the commentators happen to mention the 7-2 thrashing that Aston Villa delivered to them. Arguably that defeat was more embarrassing as a result than ours was against Leicester when we were playing for much of the match with 10 players. After all, we are just mediocre Saints, whereas the Scousers are one of the World's greatest glory teams, and last year's champions. I expect that when people heard our result, there was much shrugging of shoulders, whereas when Liverpool plastics around the World heard of their result, there would have been incredulous disbelief. But I also suspect that the commentators over here will want to forget that it ever happened and certainly won't be rabbiting on about a year later -unless of course they are Man Utd fans.
OttawaSaint Posted 25 October, 2020 Share Posted 25 October, 2020 In any case, Everton can complain as much as they like. If anything we lost a bit of our swagger after the incident. And on this, my only concern is that this win and the way the game was played has set a very high benchmark that will be very hard to maintain over a long season. When the team goes through a bad patch, as it probably will at some point, I hope critics don't then say stuff like "what's happened since Everton?", certain players are useless (depending on the view of the particular critic) and RH should get the chop. Success can breed expectiations. That's good, of course, provided it's balanced and realistic. As for me, I intend betting $10 for a Saints win every game for the rest of the season. To be honest romeau has been pretty solid in most games he has played over the last two seasons.. deserves his run in the side. redmond man of the match really? i just don’t rate this guy personally.. struggles to beat his man, loses possession quite often when trying to beat anyone. Has no football brain, carries the ball to long when could pass and his shots are usually wayward. Only thing he really brings is a bit of pace and can carry the ball at speed occasionally, overall though I think we need to upgrade on him soon. tajjuk Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 I didn't get the Everton love in before this anyway, some sort of nostalgia for the 80s glory days? Their other results were beating Palace, West Brom and West Ham, the only stand out result was the away win at Spurs, who are hardly the powerhouses they were 2-3 years ago. They then got incredibly lucky against Liverpool mainly thanks to the officials all round having a bad day. Yes Rodriguez is a good signing and they have added some extra in midfield, but that the minimum they had to do as they were bang average last year. Rodriguez as well is a guy who for the last 3-4 years basically can't complete a season and gets injured, and their defence is poor with one of the most calamity keepers in the league, did they really think they were going to sustain some sort of top 4 challenge? They also despite spending millions and millions don't have any depth, Iwobi was awful and they paid what £35 million for him? We thoroughly outplayed them and looked sharper and quicker to everything. Plus the sending off was pretty irrelevant to the result, they hadn't had a sniff really before that. I think we have a pretty much as good a chance as them as challenging for European slot to be honest, I think they will be down with us in the 7th-10th spots end of the season.

saints-cris Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 Top class first half, about as good as you'll see an in-form team get dominated from first kick to the last. A third would've been deserved to be honest. We're now 5th in the table since playing the games behind closed doors, over the course of about 15 games. And I think top 6 in points since a year ago. I think we're there or there abouts where we were under Poch / Koeman now. We're in a great place right now.
Chickendippers Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 I could have quoted about a dozen of the posters on the forum today as they made all the points I wanted to. If we wanted to clinical it could have been a cricket score (key word 'wanted') - they were happy playing around and not even giving Everton a sniff of a 2-1 come back. Ok Richarlison was out but they replaced him with another £50m player - Siggurdson. Thin bench - my arse. Armstrong looked ill/unfit at times Redmond not MoM but put a shift in - final ball wasn’t great but at least he tried to link up play and pass forwards. Vesty was superb JWP & Romeu ran the show Red card was a little harsh - nasty challenge though - didn’t affect the general play let alone the result. I thought it might have been mistaken identity as Bernard was hacking our players down just before. First mention of the 9-0 was on 20 minutes. No-one mentioned we were down to 10 men after about 15 minutes with a very dodgy red card for Bertrand MOTD didn’t show the offside goal. 3-0 would not have flattered us Ings was MoM for me with his link up play. Look forward to the analysis piece similar to the Harry Kane providing assists one…
Brumsaint Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 These are exciting times because of how much Ralph is getting out of the players. We have a really strong first 11, but I am worried about squad depth, so need to be convinced that Ralph's magic touch is improving the whole squad and bringing them all up a few levels. If the likes of Diallo, Smallbone, Obafemi, Tella, Djenepo, Valery, Vokins and Salisu can come into the first team and play as well as the players they replace we will have an exciting season! Despite our much vaunted promotion of youth and signing of young players, only three of the starting eleven against Everton were under 25 (Adams, KWP and Bednarek), so we do have a good amount of experience to help the younger players, which is a positive in my opinion. I absolutely agree with Ralph that we don't need to fear any team and can go toe to toe with the best now. We made Everton look poor and can take a lot of confidence from that. In terms of the Digne red card, I think it was more intentional than not. He tried to take KWP down once, failed so made sure he got him the second time while holding his hands up to protest his innocence. That's why there was such an angry reaction from the Saints players.

The MOTD producers embarrassed themselves by demonstrating such crass stupidity. Disagree with this a bit. Going into the day yesterday Everton's story is one of the bigger ones of the season. They were the only team with an unbeaten record and were top of the league for the first time in ages. They've got an England striker who is scoring for fun and one of the biggest names in management at the club. The montage of fans before our match set the scene perfectly for the way the game went - objectively an upset result - so the producers played a blinder in setting Everton up for a fall. Having two ex Everton players in the studio was overkill and it would have been better to have a neutral ex pro there for balance, but I thought they were both clear in saying that Saints were the better team and Osman definitely said that the red card was justified. Bertrand especially got loads of praise for exploiting the weakness in Everton's defence.
John Boy Saint Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 Think the observations from Karen Carney just about says it all about this game, correct me if I am wrong but Everton skimmed the crossbar and rifled a free kick straight into McCarthys hands. Apart from that you did wonder when they might start playing given the hype of recent weeks. Last 20 minutes were pretty surreal they looked like they had been at a lock in until 3am that morning we just went into energy conservation mode, in reality they looked wary of us almost as if they knew if they got daring and attacked us we would pick them off. Ancelotti has reams of experience, but the fact that he had cashed in his chips using up all the subs before the hour was up, is very complementary to Ralphs set up and the lads execution. Not having the piped crowd noise it was interesting to hear Ralph encouraging the players, even in the last minutes when the game was securely and N'Lundulu was running across the Everton defence in pursuit of the ball, Ralph is urging Dan to keep going. Adams is such a deceptive player, a bit of a unit, strong, and I think his size masks his pace, most defenders are going to think twice about taking him on because if they don't get it right its going to hurt as they just bounce off, if N'Lundulu can cut the mustard we have the ability swap one mobile unit with another, which is going to keep any defence on its toes. All that said, as a Saints fan of many years some of our play whilst crisp and neat, you still have that feeling in your gut that its going to go wrong at any minute, but then when we lose the ball in close play we do seem pretty good at getting it back now.

Just enjoy the fact we've upset the apple cart a bit and enjoy that everyone's spent the first few weeks wanking over Everton and the comedown will be enjoyable. How was Arsenal Leicester the first game when it ended 1-0? Our game had the league leaders being beaten, 2 -0 and a red card.Im glad I didnt stay up waiting for the programme and as for 2 Everton pundits! Chappers did try to even it out but BBC impartiality really is a non thing nowadays

You all watched the game previously and the game you likely didn't watch was on first. Perfect. Edited 26 October, 2020 by Fabrice29
OldNick Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 Oh and listening to Ryan Bertrand in the weekend pod on BBC was pretty good, as they said to him did he know it was a year since the 9-0, with him replying did they have a cake and balloons. He also said did they also report the anniversary of the 8-0 v Sunderland . He spoke well about the club
OldNick Posted 26 October, 2020 Share Posted 26 October, 2020 Did you tune in for the Arsenal game then? I doubt many Arsenal fans did either. Anyway its not about that its about impartiality as it often said that the sequence is down to the importance, amount of goals scored and incident.
