I think the key with Maitland Niles is that whilst he wants to play in midfield, no one else wants him to... He wouldn’t get a sniff in our midfield but for a huge injury crisis. Minamino will.

We should see how this season in relative safety, probably finish no higher than 12th or so. What is really concerning is how the squad is going to look next season. It's clear that we have no money and just to keep afloat we are likely to have to sell what's left of the crown jewels. Ings and JWP the first ones to go. Kat sold us down the river when she let Gao buy the club. She surely must have realised that he didn't have a pot to piss in.

We'll sell the Jewels in the summer. Ralph will move on and we'll be relegated. We'll become an average Championship side with most of our Academy players making up the bulk of the team.

We need cover at the back, FFS.

Out of interest, where do people see Minamino fitting in to the team?

In the role behind the strikers or possibly even up front.

Well he can replace Redmond for starters, Theo if he wasn’t crocked. You’d have to fit him in, he’s a game changer for our turgid attack.

Not seen him change any games for Liverpool...... too lightweight for the prem.

Really can't for life of me understand why we are in for Minamino.

If we can't sign a fullback, we should use our loan slot to sign somebody. We've struggled in every position this season at one point or another.

So who gets dropped? Seems like his arrival will just provide a selection headache?

Well if Walcott is out for 2 months, there’s one less competition. He can play all across the front 4 positions too.

Takumi Minamino is expected to join his new Southampton team-mates at their team hotel in Manchester, once a medical has been completed this evening #saintsfc [sky]

Not with Theo out and Redmond just crap it doesn’t, you could add in Adams inability to hit a barn door when he’s stood in front of it as well if you wanted.

SaintsWeb - "We have a small squad with not enough options"

SaintsWeb - "We have too many players and there's a selection headache."

Long is going to Bournemouth....I assume Redmond would take the striker spot (played there on Saturday) and Minamino takes the 'No.10' spot.

Dissapointing it's not a defender of course, but this could be an absolutely brilliant signing if he can re-discover his form at Salzburg.

Armstrong covers midfield, Walcott and Redmond covering up top, ward Prowse covering right back...we've got a patchwork team this season that requires a lot of versatility.

Not if we get the player he was before he moved to Liverpool.

Really i'd really prefer no one over a player who has shown zero ability to adapt to the league. No doubt we'll be forced to play him every game too.

Any Premier League team which puts Shane Long on the pitch is short of options up front. I’d happily take a punt on Minamino rather than watch Long chase his own tail around the pitch for another minute.

Which could happen, the pressure of being at a big club will be lifted from his shoulders.

Up top with Ings, doing the Adams role, but less like a baby elephant.

Can do a job in the 10s too. Handy.

You would pick Long over this guy???

We've barely scored a goal in open play this year. So not that much of a  a selection headache going forward.

Brilliant news if this happens. We are struggling for goals and I think this guy could be the catalyst to get us scoring more. Looks fantastic on his skills video before he signed for Liverpool. Fast, skilled, clever and a good finisher.

Walcott out for 6/8 weeks and long goes it’s a no brainer

Well, it worked with Ings... We've had a lot of success in signing fringe players from the higher Prem clubs - Bertrand, Romeu, KWP and the already mentioned Ings. Hopefully get an option to buy in there, as if he is a success we'll have no hope of signing him permanently.

He'd play as a 10 for us.

Improves the squad. Potential signing in the summer. Good addition.

Better than hastily adding a full-back we really don't want to play.

I think they are gambling on muddling through the short term crisis, and finishing the rest of the season with Vesty (and Salisu) back and using Stephens as cover at full-back, until we can get another decent full-back in the summer.

neat and tidy footballer that loves getting on the ball and can perhaps offer that touch of quality we need in the final third.  More than happy to see if he can replicate RB Salzburg form.

With COVID limiting finances and scouting and making deals with oversees players tough, the choice of players is very limited, so this feels like a nice outcome.

So, is this Liverpool doing us a favour in return for having first dibs on Ings in the summer...?

Think it’s more likely that Klopp and Liverpool see us as the ideal club and environment for him to improve and develop
