And yet Villa can bring in a midfielder for 15 odd million in January to add to a spend of almost 100 million in the summer...

Our ownership has run us into the ground, COVID or not. Don't think anyone could blame Ralph or Ings if they decide to go.

And West Ham just bought Benrahma fir £25m and Lingard on loan for best part of £5m...!

And my mate has just bought a new Breitling and leased a new Porsche...doesn't mean that I can afford to do so.

I'd be very surprised if we get anyone in, I don't think we even have the cash for a loan. Maybe the conundrum was to let Jankewitz go for a couple of million, which would then allow us to move for a loan? (hence the chat about the transfer request etc). Maybe Ralph feels it would be a waste going that way, and we're going to give Jankewitz a chance and use a midfielder to cover full back.

Villa have only been in the league for like 18 months, so will still have loads of players on Championship wages, they won't have signed a raft of new contracts.  We have been in the Prem for ages and pay PL wages, and to keep people like JWP, Bednerak, Romeu etc. you generally have to give them even bigger wages.

They just sold Haller for like £20 million.

This season they have spent around £50 million and sold around £40 million.  Until they signed Benrahma, we had spent more than them this season and had sold less......

Williams is staying at Utd.

"Brandon will stay," Solskjaer said after his team’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

"He played (for) the under-23s against Liverpool (on Saturday), he needed the match fitness.

“He has been working really hard. We don't have any more players that we feel should be going. We need a strong squad.”

Another disappointing Jan window for Saints ?

Quite possibly. Failure to sign back up in the full back area after failing to do so in the summer would be a big disappointment, especially as on the face of it there is no reason why we couldn't find someone who we can afford to do the job.

Its not like we are searching for a starting striker. Just a competent run of the mill full back.

To just have one selectable RB and one selectable LB is insufficient in a normal season, let alone this covid congested one.

I assume Valery and Vokins were the back ups.

Grealish and Mings at least will be on wages higher than we will ever pay. Also, how many players have they still actually got that were integral to their promotion? Villa were paying silly wages even for the Championship at the time, so not sure you can state that as a factor really.

True, West Ham sold Haller this window but the fee paid by Ajax just about pays off the outlay for his purchase from Frankfurt (£40m), as they only paid around 25% up front. So yes, even the dildo brothers have come out of COVID better than Gao.

--------

The simple fact of the matter is that we will never go anywhere (Europa qualification and beyond) with Gao in charge and if this self-sustainable model continues we could well find ourselves in big trouble if our manager and best players head to pastures new.

I don't disagree with the self sustainable model in principle, but the facts are that a big initial investment is needed to overhaul the squad before we can even think about resting on our laurels. The squad isn't good enough. The youth aren't good enough.

Our success this season is just testament to the great job that Ralph and our best 11 have done. Hopefully we can see a change of ownership in summer.

Liverpool just about to pay £2m for a PNE centre back.
Surely there is good value in the lower leagues.  Look at Cash for Villa last night.  Didn’t cost the earth and very versatile.  Can play RB and goalkeeper.

I thought Cash cost more then KWP, who by very nature of how he has played for us so far this season, is the very definition of value - outstanding at that.

And besides, Cash is a goalkeeper, they are usually cheaper than outfield players 😉

If they don't go up this season, we should be all over Reading winger Michael Olise (rumoured release clause £11m) and left back Omar Richards (out of contract, but will have to pay some compensation). Probably bag the pair for around £15m.

Obviously we don't even have fifteen quid at the moment, but maybe we can rustle up a few pennies from down the back of the sofa (and moving out some deadwood).

Looks like Romain Perraud signed a new contract to 2025 two days ago?

https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2021/romain-perraud-signs-extension-until-2025-with-brest/

Hes touted as one of the best young LBs in Ligue 1. Would also cost upwards of 12 million so highly unlikely we would pay that for LB cover, unless Bertrand is leaving in the summer (despite saying hes happy, still no contract signed)

Seems like Leicester are going for Chalobah at Watford, among others, rather than Maitland-Niles according to John Percy earlier.

Hopefully we are still in pole position to land Maitland-Niles on loan.

Billy GIlmour would be the nail in the coffin for Jankowitz though, surely?

We're talking six months difference in age and Gilmour wants game time before the Euros. Gilmour would not get into then squad with Diallo and Romeu fit.

AND Would mean Jankowitz is further down the pecking order for another 6 months.

Who will play left back if Bertrand is unavailable?

Jack Stephens played left back earlier in the season against Newcastle. With Vestergaard and Salisu supposedly close to returning he could be available to cover either full back position.

I'm not suggesting that he is an adequate replacement, just that if the transfer window doesn't bring us respite, we may see him covering those positions until the end of the season. The Man U game is probably too early for Vest to return, but Ralph may view Jack as a full back an option going forward (in the absence of anything else!).
