Celtic's Jeremie Frimpong, who I think we were linked with before, is in talks with Leverkusen. Might just rule them out of any move for Brandon Williams, should United be willing to let him go out on loan at the end of the window

I thought we might be in for him, until I saw the offer was for £11m or so and therefore probably way out of our budget at the moment!

That is a terrible and unreliable website. Wayne Veysey barely counts as a journalist.

That article contains the insightful line...

"It is said the situation will only change if there is a late U-turn from the club management."

Covering all bases there! 😂

This is a loan we should be looking at surely? Cover at full back and in midfield

Unlikely unless we felt we could sign him permanently and IMO he is a central midfielder, not really a full back.

Anyone else wonder if maybe KWP injury is not a minor one and RH hasn't disclosed that for fear of putting prices/loan terms up?

Seemed strange that he said he didn't know how bad it was after the Arsenal game, I don't believe that considering how on top of the medical side they are and Ralph personally is usually very honest.

I suspect he was not sure because the injury had only happened in training shortly before the pre-match presser, and probably hadn't seen him since. It takes a while to assess an injury, possibly needing scans etc. The concern for me is what Ralph alluded to last week, recovery from muscle injuries is a big problem at the moment because the players are not allowed to access some of the facilities due to Covid. So something that in other circumstances may have been innocuous turns into a bigger problem (cf Romeu).

He’s played most of his club career at full back or wing back, played there for England too.

He is a midfielder who was used at full back by Arsenal when they had nobody else and then picked by England at LB when there was an injury crisis and he had recently played well there for Arsenal in a big game.

As he says himself, he is not a defender.

If KWP does a quad muscle injury, those can be tricky if you play him again too quickly, especially given the nature of how he plays eg high energy up and down the flanks. Club would be barmy even by recent standards not to offer Ralph another short-term FB option finances or not. Would get the money back IMO through a top 10 finish which the FB situation risks. If Vesty had only been a month’s absence then Jack to RB as Valery just isn’t a RB in a 4. RWB in a 5 maybe. Salisu has been a waste really which hasn’t helped Ralph. Vest is out for a while and KWP who knows.

Schedule this year means even with good attention to detail, there have been more muscle injuries beyond the normal impact ones than we’ve seen under Ralph. FBs are high wear and tear positions.

Looks like Demarai Gray has sorted out his next move, according to this update from Sky Sports last night...

Maitland-Niles on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy would be very good.

I hear what you say about him being a midfielder, but if he would accept being a utility player with us, then I would go in for him. We have to be a more attractive option than WBA, who apparently are 'leading the chase' for his loan.

I can see the chase for Williams at MU ending in frustration, so I'd sooner get in the player that is actually available. Bird in the hand and all that.

BBC are saying Liverpool are hopeful of signing a defender. Where's Vesti?......don't let him out of your sight. I'd be very surprised if Spurs don't at least make an enquiry about Ings with Kane now out. I'm not one of the "doom & gloom" merchants on here, but the next three days could be interesting. And if the worst was to happen, I would hope we are lining up replacements already as we would have to act very quickly. Just sayin.....

We can only potentially bring in one loan with Theo in the squad, so either AMN or Williams sounds good to me.

That's a thought. I'd forgotten Theo is technically on loan. We could do with asking Everton to make him a free transfer, but I recall they are paying 50% of his wages, so we probably don't want to pay it all. This could be limiting.

He could have an opportunity to play one of the 10s for us when our first choice fullbacks are fit. I think both positions in our system suit this player well.

Hopefully we can assure him enough to choose us over WBA. He wants to stay in Southgate’s plans but I don’t see how playing for WBA would do that?!

Was thinking the same. Reckon Ralph has wanted a left-footed AM and ANM fits the bill perfectly and also provides that LB cover. Must surely be motivated to perform given the Euros in the summer. If we get him on loan, great. If we get him with view to a permanent move....awesome.

Maitland-Niles is right footed. We don't need a #10 as its probably our best stocked position, especially with Djenepo and Redmond now back.

We need a competent full back cover, preferably someone for whom that is their actual position and they would like to play there not in midfield.

Tricky bit is unless the KWP injury is bad, they are going to be a squad player, covering occassionally.

Maitland-Niles wouldn't be a first choice full back, midfielder or no10 for us, but he is probably a better third choice goalkeeper than Harry Lewis.

Although the #10 position is well stocked, I would still say it is up for grabs given the form/availability of everyone bar Armstrong. And he also seems to require his pitch time to be carefully managed.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Do the club sell names on the back of shirts by per letter? Is the cub trying to recoup some lost funds by trying to have as many double-barreled names as possible 😂

Joking apart I think he would be a good signing.

We love a double barrelled surname, he'll fit right in

Surely Arsenal would only be loaning him on the proviso that he'll play more often than not , who's place in the team will he be taking when we have a full squad fit ?

Unless KWP is a bit more injured than Ralph is letting on? Surely Maitland-Niles would be a better bet at right back than Valery?
