He is 19. If the club feel his is better or potential to be better than Obafemi, Tella or Nlundulu then surely he is worth getting. I can see Obafemi being allowed to leave in the summer

A 35 year old target man like Pelle is not suited to our style of play.

The Chinese league is a tier 5 league, so not many points there.  His last appearance for Italy was some time ago, so he loses out there.

a good exercise for you pundits who want to see if we should sign someone.  Big Sam said yesterday he had given three targets to WBA, none of them made the required points.

Very hard to just write off £20m, but perhaps cutting losses quickly is a smart move with wages no doubt sizeable too.

I assume this is sarcasm as no way would anyone judge a player based on their fifa rating.. but in MLG defence he said he’s not suited to our style, not that he’s not good enough.. which he’s right about.

Part of me would love Pellè to come back for six months, as an option if we need something different. The realist says he’s 35 and doesn’t suit or game plan at all.

Ideal Plan B off the bench when we're facing a parked bus. We do lack a physical presence up front.

Not sure we'd ever see Ralph shouting for us to hit it long into box though.

Our current striker beyond Ings and Adams are a 32 year old who is rapidly diminishing and has never been much of a goalscorer at his peak, a 31 year old loan, who whilst is doing well for us has never been a regular goalscorer, and an unproven 20 year old who needs game time and another 21 year old who's had a few sub appearances.

Considering Adams and Ings have been injured this year, we really need someone who can replace them so I think it's less worrying about Ings leaving and more about having a viable option up front if either of the first choice two are injured.

I mean you never know, if we keep our form up we could be in the Europa league next year (especially as with City and Spurs in the league cup final that place will likely go to 7th OR is the Europa league 2 going to be a thing?) so squad depth could be more important next year.

Looking for another striker is shrewd just incase Ings doesn't sign, but we need more alternatives anyway even if he stays.

Expand

Hate to be pedantic but the 32 yo rapidly diminishing striker who doesn't score many goals turns 34 in a couple of days time.    The two year contract extension was a baffling decision.

Not sure he gives us the 'panic when the ball is lumped into the box' that Pelle did.

Which could be an effective (though ugly) Plan B.

Che brings lots of good physicality and hold up play to our team, but even his mother would say that he is underwhelming in heading the ball. If we need plan B we could use Vestergaard (when he returns) as an emergency centre forward.

Borne out by this in The Athletic today talking about Wolves hunt for a new striker whilst Jiminez is out:

"...as was Graziano Pelle, but it is believed he doesn’t meet the new post-Brexit requirements to move to the Premier League."

Not really a position we need a player, as centre back is possibly the position we have the best depth in the squad. Money better spent elsewhere.

Without Salisu and Vestergarrd we look very short at CB.

The difference being Tomori would add some much needed pace to the back line.

Never really understood this agenda you seem to have with depth of position (you say it every single time someone mentions a transfer), if someone is better than what you have, get them in (I’m not saying tomori is, although I do like him, but I’d rather have something a bit different, I.e pace than the same old).

Tomori would want to be a starter which he wouldn't be here, not right away. He could potentially be a Bednarek replacement (as I don't see him signing a new contract), but I'd rather we tried to sign someone better. We should be aiming to have our defence as solid as when we had the likes of Fonte, Aldeweireld and Van Dijk back there.

I don't see him signing a new contract anytime soon either. Fortunately we don't need him to since the one he signed a month ago only ends in 2025.😂

It's because we have a finite amount of resources and Bednarek/Vestergaard/Stephens/Salisu is probably the best depth outside of the top four at CB whereas (for example) Walcott/Redmond/Djenepo/Armstrong is looking decidedly average this season and more somewhere we should spend cash. Also our back up fullbacks are out of position CB's or Volkins/Valery. Lets look to spend money there first, attacking mid second, and back up striker maybe third rather than spend in an area where our most hyped summer signing isn't even 3rd choice. Without two CB's most teams look short there, four senior CBs is plenty for a team who plays four at the back.

I'm a big fan of Tomori and think Chelsea have backed the wrong horse in going with Zouma over him, but he's not a player we need right now.

Sure, if money were no object and we could indulge a big, deep squad, sign him up - long-term, he's a far bigger prospect than Bednarek or Stephens.

I'm not expecting any movements from us in the transfer window unless we get a serious injury crisis or a key player is sold.

Posted

I'm not saying that we're in for him, but I think the top Brazilian and Argentinian leagues score highly for work permit points, and if he's played in the South American equivalent of the Champs League/UEFA League that means almost automatic approval. Apparently this guy did play a couple of games in the Copa Libertadores, so he should be able to get a permit IF we're actually after him.

I'm really just hoping we sign a full back. Pref someone comfortable playing on either flank. Bertrand and KWP are both doing great, but coverage for them is pretty damned thin (didn't we play Jack Stephens at left back in one match?)

I'm a little worried at centre-back too if the apparent problems/injuries with Salisu persist.

Preferably quite soon as I believe KWP would miss the Leeds game if he got booked at Leicester. Think it resets after that.

Yep, me too. N'lundulu is now part of the first team picture, ditto Tella, and Obafemi appears to be off the naughty step albeit is now injured. I guess the issue is whether he has PL potential. Interesting link though.

You realise that applies to Bertrand as well. There are still 2 games before the number of yellows before a ban increases to 10 (it doesn't reset), Leicester and Leeds.

Yea we played Jack Stephens at left back for the Newcastle game, although I think that was due to Vokins not being fit. If Bertrand misses a game we’d have to play Vokins as we have no other fit centre backs at the moment.

Yeah, or something weird like KWP to left back and Valery in at right back etc. It does seem to me the most fragile part of the squad, even though both starting full backs are excellent.

good timing that Valery got a run out in the last game I guess. Not saying he is the long term answer, but he can play one game without the world coming to an end.
