Theo would be ok as an option for us, I find it a bit arrogant that people think we’re too good for a player like him....we’re not.

He would also bring with him, a lot of experience for the squad to learn from which should never be over estimated. If Ralph thinks this is a good move then who am I to argue.

I don't think its arrogance. He will be on huge wages (unless Everton are subsidising alot) and not sure what he will bring to us, we already have two very fast but limited forwards and he doesnt suit the Redmond/Armstrong role. The signing doesnt make sense to me personally but if Ralph actually wants him then who am I to judge.

Everton sign Ben Godfrey, like that, shame we don't have the funds for these sort of transfers anymore. Young and English centre-back with pace, potentially could become a very good player.

He was horrible last season. Risky signing for me.

I guess if we look at this as a straight comparison with Boufal, Theo will certainly add more to the squad than he did.

So that's something.

I wonder how much influence Matt Crocker ahs had on this? I'm pretty certain he was part of the academy setup when Theo was here.

How tf are Everton affording all of these players? Rodriguez, Allan, Doucoure, Nkounkou, now Godfrey. I know they have rich owners but doesn't FFP exist to stop teams spending outside of their operating incomes? They've not made any big sales and they finished 12th last season... unless I'm missing something?

It did, until City got away with breaking the rules.

What if Theo were to come on loan, subsidised by Everton?

Interesting to read all the latest rumours. None of them sound particularly convincing and it seems odd that Saints would suddenly abandon the transfer policy that has stood them in good stead on many an occasion (albeit that some more recent transfers like Carillo, etc. may have challenged this outlook).

Personally I feel that it is odd that we would be looking at Theo, but if he does come then I hope he can rediscover something of the raw talent that caused him to attract the attention which led him to leave Saints in the first place. I well remember the adulation he recieved when he first came to prominence and the frightening speed he demonstrated in what I think was his debut - away to one of the Sheffield clubs I think.

Squad Needs

Overall, if we don't sign anyone today it is not the end of the world, but it is interesting to analyse our current squad to see where the needs are. A look at the Saints squad in terms of at least two players for every position is interesting (NB Don't read too much into the order of players or the slightly arbitrary nature of the labels for positions!):

  • GK: McCarthy, Forster, Gunn, Lewis (Surprisingly listed on OS as part of first team squad)
  • LB: Bertrand, Vokins, (McQueen - LT Injury & not listed on Saints website in any squad!)
  • RB: KWP, Valery
  • CB1: Bednarek, Stephens
  • CB2: Salisu, Vestergaard
  • CM/DM1: Romeu, Diallo
  • CM/DM2: Ward-Prowse, Smallbone
  • AM1: Redmond, Djenepo
  • AM2: Armstrong, Boufal
  • CF1: Ings, Obafemi
  • CF2: Adams, Long, Tella

It is interesting that the following players are identified as B-Team players: Slattery, Sims, Hesketh (and Tella is in both first-team and B-team squads!)

Looking at that squad list backs up the idea that if we sell Boufal then we need also to bring in a replacement who would provide cover for Armstrong. As others have rightly suggested, other areas we might also look to strengthen include the full-back positions. After that reserve CM and CF positions coulkd also be strengthened though they don't seem a particularly urgent need at present.

Future Prospects?

I think the big questions must be about what the future prospects are for Smallbone, Obafemi, Tella, Valery and Vokins and how we best give them experience. Obviously there are also similar questions about those who have been dropped from the first team squad onto the B-Team.

Rashica would be excellent - rumours end of last week that Leeds and us were the interested prem teams, though note Leeds are signing a winger from Rennes - so would only leave us?

Though Villa pulled out as he was too expensive (wages)... so not sure how we would afford it? Also, would then loan him out? Surely they'd want a sale.

If Everton are subsidising alot of his wages so his costs are more in line with our average wage level then it wouldn't be a huge risk. But I still don't see where he would fit in unless Obafemi is going out on loan. But like I say if Ralph wants him then in Ralph I trust.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but I don't think Walcott would be a good signing. He is an older version of Redmond with a bit more pace.

Apart from Ings (Romeu yesterday), we don't have a lot of clinical players and Walcott is not clinical at all. He isn't a very clever player either and is constantly offside.

I guess apart from the wages, he would be relatively low risk. Good PR from the club too

Posted this in the other thread

Twitteris talking about Pascal Grob from Birghton.... would normally discount it but he played for Ingolstadt for 3yrs under Ralph, knows the system and more squad depth ?

Apparently created a lot of chances when playing for them from midfield

"He created more chances than any other player in the league that season, a total of 95 chances."

Groß can operate as a central midfielder, a winger, and an attacking midfielder - sounds useful

I don't think Walcott adds anything to the squad. Even at his best he was little more than a player who had the ability to run quickly with the ball at his feet. He's never been a great finisher, tends to drift out of games for long periods and has absolutely no footballing brain. Not for me.

Not too impressed with Theo coming on loan, as echoed by others I think he is past it.

However, if the options were nothing or Theo- then I would take Theo all day long!

Ultimately, it is only a loan and he does offer something different- can play upfront or wide.

So I guess- welcome aboard. I’m gonna predict he gets 5 goals in the PL.

Averages one goal every 4 and a half games roughly......

Why get rid of Boufal and get Walcott.  That’s a massive massive down grade

Really?

Not sure I see where you are coming from there.

Theo isn't an amazing addition, no, but I'm fairly confident he is going to add more than the 'maybe he'll come good' Boufal.

What's going on with Hoedt?

We're not going to be left with him stinking the place out, are we?

https://www.lalaziosiamonoi.it/news/calciomercato-lazio-de-grandis-hoedt-viene-respirato-come-una-beffa-130807

Stefano De Grandis commented on the purchase of Hoedt by Lazio and the discussions around the biancoceleste defense on Sky Sport: "The speech is always of quality. Lazio wanted a defender and started with an interest in Kumbulla and Verona. he asked for a lot. In the end he takes home Hoedt, who he sold for 17 million and resumes on a free loan with the right of redemption for 5 million in a year. It is clear that the fan remains with a bitter taste if Cagliari also takes Godin, Roma Kumbulla, everyone takes defenders of a certain depth. Hoedt is breathed in like a mockery. "

Anyone able to translate that better than Google? I can translate French but not Italian!

Looking at various Lazio related websites they are talking about Hoedt as already being a Lazio player but there seem to be suggestions that he is injured or not fit.
