St.JonB Posted 28 August, 2020 Share Posted 28 August, 2020 (edited) Just heard Jacobs and Hawksbee talk about this on their show so took a look where we sat: https://www.transferleague.co.uk/premier-league-last-five-seasons/transfer-league-tables/premier-league-table-last-five-seasons Unsurprisingly we sit 2nd bottom (or top if you are the owner). With Norwich being relegated I'm sure the three coming up would have a big net spend then us. Edited 28 August, 2020 by St.JonB Spelling
Turkish Posted 28 August, 2020 Share Posted 28 August, 2020 Dont forget we have agents fees, bonuses and NI contributions to pay which other clubs dont have to worry about.
HarvSFC Posted 28 August, 2020 Share Posted 28 August, 2020 Only us and Norwich running a net spend profit, says all you need to know. Luckily we now seem to have good football personnel within the top of the club as that's all we can rely on.
Tony F Posted 28 August, 2020 Share Posted 28 August, 2020 Does explain a bit why Brighton were WHINGING so much about the "rules and regs" of Project Restart, having a Net spend of almost £200M over the last 5 years....

Saint_clark Posted 28 August, 2020 Share Posted 28 August, 2020 It's been proven time and again that net transfer spend rarely translates to table position, but ranking wage bills almost exactly matches league position. I'd be more interested in seeing that comparison.

The squad isn't in a bad place. Shift some more of the mistakes and things will look extremely healthy.

I'd be more interested in seeing that comparison. Ask and you shall receive https://www.spotrac.com/epl/payroll/. We are 11th which is much more sensible. Wages have been our issue for years, when a player is on 80k a week, that is a few million a year. We have about 5 players on that sort of money not even in our squad, it dwarfs transfer fees and is undoubtedly where all our money is going. When we need to "sell to buy" it isn't because we are broke and can't afford transfer fees without raising money, it is because our wage bill is massive and if we can't shift players off it we will go under in the coming years and be forced to sell players for much less than they are worth just to stay afloat. It is just good business. Also worthy of note we are 4th in the league for most spent on goalie wages, seems like our biggest sink. EDIT: Bit of further analysis. Brighton have spent almost exactly 200m more than us in transfers in the last 5 years which has them as top 6 for net spend. However our wage bill is at the moment ~20m a year more than them and 2 years ago it was 42m more than them! Over the 5 years we have spent about 130m more than them on wages which doesn't make the net spend disparity seem that crazy. And brighton are very much an outlier in that their net spend is huge. Miltonaggro Posted 28 August, 2020 Share Posted 28 August, 2020 Surprised that they didn't put the first team on furlough during the summer to put pressure on Norwich - every place is worth a lot of money.
